I think the only differences here is her power and control are much stronger in 1999 (obviously). Her actual voice sounds incredibly similar, just a bit lacking in confidence or something, I'm not sure how to explain it.. but it's still amazing!

her confidence has changed from 1999-2018 i have always been a big fan and have seen her live from fantasy and rainbow and what I have noticed is the change in confidence, it could be the scrutiny of social media and she is trying harder to be perfect now, it still is a great performance but the gestures and the interactions have changed a lot, still love her but in this clip it still is obvious that she is not giving as much as she one did live

1999 Mariah delivers the song with passion and she is preaching the message. Recent Mariah hasn't exactly lost touch with the song but she definitely doesn't deliver it with as much raw passion as she used to. I hate comparing old Mariah with "now" Mariah because it's sad that her talent has faded but that's only because she worked so hard for her fans and basically sacrificed her voice for us. That being said, I love her now even more than I did two decades ago (or 3 for that matter) and I'm thankful she's still performing. This woman is a national treasure with iconic status; She deserves respect no matter how you feel about the current state of her vocal abilities.
In my opinion, she's not as emotionally connected to the song as in 1999 when she recently wrote it, gone through the experience and felt the feeling that she put in the song. Now she's performing it for the fan not necessarily because she feels the emotion.

There's a difference between deterioration and something completely gone. Nothing warrants her retiring, and she probably won't do so anytime in the near future considering the fact that she LOVES singing. And Beyonce has overtaken her? She's a great performer. Notice I said performer, because Beyonce sings and dances simultaneously, Mariah does NOT. She's an artist, but she's more of a performer. Mariah's an artist, she's a singer, she's a songwriter, and she's a producer among other things. Besides, Mariah has been in the music business much longer than Beyonce has and frankly she's more of an artist than Beyonce will ever be. Believe what you wish to believe, Mariah will ALWAYS have a place in the music business, and her musical impact will forever be greater than any of the artists of today. Also, Mariah has vocal nodules, which gave her the ability to access the whistle register and a lower register less typical of a Light Lyric Soprano. She's had vocal nodules since she was a child and these nodules have for the most part led to her vocal decline. I suggest you google them.
