Kreanga my all time favourite player what a killer backhand....
It always baffles me how calm and relaxed Waldner is during the game...he almost makes it seem like hes not even trying
One of the things I absolutely love in table tennis: a battle of two polar opposites. Waldner with his calm demeanor and elegant technique. Kreanga with his brute force and "I will destroy you" attitude.
And who would've thought that Kreanga would be the victor, one of those rare occasions. He isn't known to have the strongest backhand of the previous generation for nothing. Awesome match!
PS: these guys have a 7 year difference of age ;)
I thought kreanga would win.Most of the matches I watched from waldner were losses:/

@@greenLinkLP Kreanga like Schlager was rather irrelevant before 2000 so his prime coincided with Waldner's decline.And Waldner declined massively after 2000,make no mistake.Waldner beat him in the 1996 European Championship,1998 Europe top12,1998 World Cup,1998 European Masters Cup but you won't find videos of those matches so people always have the impression that he was owned by him.His rivalry with Schlager is even more dramatic he was 9-3 against but based on youtube videos one would think Schlager dominated.

i ve been watching waldner and kreanga for decades now...waldner the composer, kreanga the destroyer..i hope they become friends..lol..

Great match between two fine players. That forehand winner by Waldner when down 10-11 at 5.40 is just remarkable - balls of steel LOL and that last point of the match too. Great entertainment.

Waldner must have won 3rd set, ofcourse waldner wasn't in his prime..he still played some fantastic shots here..especially double drop shot..kreanga played well too..

Waldner in his primetime would never win a singel set to a top 5 player now... The sport changed to such a perfektion now..
Not true because Samsonov is 40 and still winning sets and even matches against the top 5. Waldner beat Samsonov more often than not. See the 97 WTTC final. 97 - Waldner didn't lose a single set the whole tournament. Waldner would be the best now just like he was the best then. Top talent is top talent. Take Michael Jordan in his prime and put him in the NBA now and he'd win. Table tennis has not changed as much as you think.
Samsonov dont win to Ma Long, Fan, Xu XIn or Zhang Jilke...
The sport is more agressiv then before. 20 years ago players play backhand downspin to recive a service.
If you do it now to a top player he´s smashing the ball. (i mean long backspin)
Waldner was a top player in his era.. maybe the best
Look at the game again and look at the beautiful check mate points, that double bounce, that perfectly well placed block. Waldner is like a mercedes benz engine, quiet and efficient. Ok he lost this game but that does not mean the style was ultimately decided that specific day. I would have not believed that Kreanga's style is over and out just because he had lost either that day. Kreanga had to play way above his usual level to beat him. Good for him. If you play sports you know what I am talking about. You lose some and you win some but the style is perfected even if you lose.
Simon Bast If Waldner existed today, he will have adopt today's techniques too, but with waldner's characteristics. You know what I mean.
This is not true. The class and legancy waldner had in his time, none of the chinese have it today. Their game and techniques looks like robotics not human TT.
