Growing up in Manila in the 1950s, I have distinct memories of two adjacent airfields (actually, airports), which, in everyday parlance, we called simply the "international" or the "domestic." The domestic - which I believe was Nichols Filed - was used exclusively by PAL, whose fleet then consisted or DC-3s, Convairs, and Viscounts (their only international destination at that time was Hong Kong; their other international routes were in abeyance). The international airport was, even by 1950s standards, small: only one drive leading up to it; a large portion of it open-sided; a small self-steading restaurant where passengers could be served refreshments during refueling stops. The most exciting event during those years was the crash-landing of a Pan American Stratocruiser on June 2, 1958. At the time we left Manila, the "new" internationals airport (opened in 1961) was under construction.
I hope they might still consider NAIA as a 100% domestic airport in the future just like in Seoul, South Korea (Gimpo Airport) and in Osaka, Japan (Osaka Airport)
The Osaka Airport you are referring to is named as “Itami International Airport” and despite its billing and designation as international, it is 100% domestic (Kansai is the other Osaka airport and is 100% international, with Haneda and Narita the only domestic destinations from there). And to add up, these are other airports that are majority domestic 1. Bangkok Don Muang (still has some international flights but mostly LCC) 2. Taipei Songshan 3. Nagoya-Komaki 4. Kuala Lumpur-Subang (now handles turboprop planes)
