Kelly says in his book that going to Puerto Rico and Barbados a few times a year growing up taught him how to surf and overcome the fear of surfing reef breaks, so when he got to Hawaii he was much more prepared.
Growing up surfing in NY and NJ, PR was my Hawaii 100%. Flying redeye with my Dad into Aguadilla, sleeping in the car at the golf course and surfing Wildo at sunrise are some of my favorite memories. Now being out in California and having Hawaii closer, I love Kauai but... PR will always have a special place in my heart.
Table Top and maybe some Wilderness and maybe Middles in there as well. I was surfing at Wilderness in late1984 and a nice Puerto Rican kid paddled out with the Slater brothers, they were all fun to surf with. I’m sure Kelly was surfing good and Sean was really good I remember.. I was 19 at the time and am guessing Kelly was maybe 14ish. Went back again, discovered Pavones after that and that was the go to after that.
.. was stationed in PR in 89'-90' and had a lot of fun on those waves. The homes dedicated to surfers back then for us to stay were awesome. I was amazed as to how many New Yorkers I met and surfed with there.
@@alexandrasantiago1: Oahu NS is known as the 7 Mile Miracle - from Haleiwa to V Land. Starting to think 🇵🇷 is the 100 Mile Miracle - Fajardo to Rincon! The whole Atlantic side is North Shore!! So many 🌊 on outer reefs - por ejemplo Carolina 😉. Loco !! 🤪
No one could destroy the waves. They might make little ripples on top of the waves, and the waves just backed in the same states as they were within seconds.
Almost all of us are made up of 99% water. Then there's Kelly who is clearly made of 100% water. I believe he has the ability to forsee what the wave/water will do before it knows what it's going to. From BIG waves to small, he is stoked to be out there. That's the mark of surfing from your soul. He's blessed to be out there and he knows it. He has nothing to prove to anyone except himself.
He doesn’t « destroys » waves, he rides waves, connected to the ocean and feeling the flow… It’s very aggressive and pretentious to use that word « destroys » when you speak about that element, the ocean which give us waves to enjoy and respect 🙏
It must be so unreal being Kelly Slater everywhere you go your welcomed with open arms and you can never second guess is that him or not he’s been around so dam long it’s actually kinda strange professional athletes they come and they go not the king Kelly he feels so comfortable in his throne that I’m not sure he’s gonna give it up any time soon, that’s cool I kinda like watching Kelly do what he does best keep on ripping Mr Slater

Puerto Rico.....
Hawaii's sister.
Same weather.
Same size.
Same power.
Different food but just as good.
I love them both equally.

Kelly Slater the greatest Surfer that is,that was,and that will ever be. Thanks for all the years .
Andy was better.
@@bi0008 2nd best, Andy never had the style of Kelly, never had the titles, and sadly drugs kept him in that 2nd place forever.
@@OD99C The style??? 😂 The titles sure, but definitely not the style.
@@OD99C3 time world champ Andy Irons is regarded as one of the most stylish surfers ever.
This is from back when rode normal boards and was winning. The crap he rides now just makes him look slow and out of touch!
