As of today I am all set. I have been off the electric grid all day. My trifuel generators are ready to go. My default fuel is natural gas but I have backups including gasoline, propane, lamp oil, denatured alcohol and wood. My new Ecoflow Ultra battery system is now operational and tested. I am living life normally without grid power. My two refrigerators, two freezers, gas stove hot water, lighting are fully operational. At 8:00pm I will start one of my generators for one hour to charge up my batteries to last another day. Then I will shut it all down until needed.

That's why in Cold climates you should always have a source of heart other than electric heat with wood enough to last all winter. At least 10 cords of wood. And connected to a well for water.

These conditions described in the first minute sounds like days when I would clear the driveway, and depending on my age, go to work, go to school or having retired walk the dog. Blizzard of 78 that shut down the state of Massachusetts being the only time I didn't go to work due to weather. And that took a governor announcement.
I've got clothes that will keep me comfortable outside after dark with wind chills to -60. The dog loves that stuff. We get some of our best walks during those 7 meager hours of sunlight.
Ah, the blizzard of 78. Hurricane force winds drifting snow to the third floor windows in the city. ?On the roads, traffic stopped for miles, cars abandoned on the interstates. In town, some sidewalks blown bare of snow, others a narrow path shoveled out by some hero. We volunteered to work with the civil defense for that storm, in the basement of the old auditorium, we took messages, directed heavy equipment and military deuce and a halfs to emergencies, getting people to hospitals, shelters, forty hours in two days, just a couple naps. Then the walk home.
And when work opened back up I got the job of shoveling out the fire hydrant. That took a nine hours to clear out. 80 feet, four feet wide, and four feet deep driven snow, cleared by hand.
Yah, I've seen over 60 winters. Been without power for most of a week, slept 4 to a bed, now have two generators and all the rest. But I still walk the dog every day.

3 months supply of food? Where do you live that’s going to be snowed in for that long? I’ve lived in heavy snow areas and have NEVER needed that much stored food. Insulation and back up heating and lighting are just common sense but let’s not get silly about pre-storm prep. Generators should be in well ventilated areas as well as the fuel that runs them.

The issue is that you may be without power for a week or more but if something happens to the Internet then your plastic may not work at all and stores may not get shipments in. Helene is a good example. Roads and bridges won't be repaired for months.

With the strikes of the ports and them calling for low shelf capacity in the grocery stores it's probably a smart idea and then theirs the war they keep talking about sounds like it's becoming reality.
