Congrats on your 1CC of SA! It is one of the hardest, so the rest of the series should be not much of a problem, even for a 1CC (except LoLK, that may be a hurdle)
I am glad to see someone who grew to like Mountain of Faith, I know some people had a bad first impression and never got to fully appreciate that game.
Also, I can see where you are coming from on your perspective on UFO, especially after coming from SA, a game that is basically on the complete other side of the spectrum than UFO in the way that you have to learn the attacks to do well, but I personally like UFO is for two reasons:
-The RNG forces you to get better at dodging by reaction rather than by practice, analysis and repetition. You have to make different movements each time you face an attack, which was something that SA had less of.
-The UFO mechanic rewards you for playing aggressively, forcing you to get gud in order to get the UFOs, similar to the way SA forces you to get gud in order to get life pieces, but dissimilar in the way that SA rewards practice instead of aggressive play.
It doesn't help that UFO is arguably the hardest in the series, but it seems to me that it was made much harder by the fact that you are not the best at reaction dodging, which is just muscle memory that you develop as you play against more RNG-like attacks.
Also no one likes Shou lasers lol

    • @somefries3101
      @somefries3101 Год назад +13

yeah, the UFO mechanic makes you risk your life in order to get a reward, however with bullet hell practice this won't seem too much of an issue, unless it's lunatic mode but hey, it's lunatic mode. SA was the game i raged the most when trying to 1CC it, it was damn hard for me because of the bosses being relentless with some of their spellcards.

In my opinion, UFO is easily the hardest game in the series. It's one of my personal favourites, but you need to get to an adequate level to actually enjoy it, or else it'll just feel like you're banging your head against a wall.
Nice work 1ccing SA, by the way. Funnily enough that game was also my first 1cc on Normal, despite the general consensus that it's one of the harder games. TBH I just think most people don't realise just how learnable the game is (nice job noticing that aspect yourself, actually).
Oh right and small correction, but the only requirement in SA to get extra life pieces after an attack is just to not die. The game doesn't care if you bomb or not.

  • @nico1520
    @nico1520 Год назад +7

Idk if you're aware of this, but UFO has a very unique effect on players. I call it The UFO Dichotomy:
Basically, high level players (including non-touhou shmup players) ADORE Touhou 12 because of its demanding patterns and deep scoring mechanics, but newer, less skilled players tend to really hate it for the same reasons you pointed out in the video (heck, i Lunatic 1cc'd it and i still have some grievances with it lol)
i will say in its defense that, while i don't find the boss fights all that enjoyable, i do really love the stages. They encourage routing, since the color, spawning and movement of ufos are *static*, which means that if you learn where the ufos are and their color pattern, you can get the results you desire 100% of the time. In case you didn't know, you can also delay color switching by following the ufos very close, which is an additional layer of memorization, routing and execution that i also like.
You can watch my Lunatic 1cc on my channel if you're curious on what routes i came out with (and how i spammed bombs throughout the entire game cause fuck it LOL)

I agree with you on MoF. I think it's easier thanks to bombs but... it's still quite difficult.
Minor fix about SA, you can bomb and still get a life piece, it's just getting hit that's not allowed.
I'm pretty sure UFO is often considered harder than SA. IDK though since I never bought/played the game...
Ten Desires should be easier, though you don't get many resources at all. I think it's fun but that's the second Touhou game I don't own/didn't play.

But your experience with it is valid too and I can see why you didn't like it. I'm very curious about how you'll enjoy 13-15 next.15 has a reputation of being extremely hard, but it's actually one of the easier ones to survival 1cc once you get how it works and I find it extremely satisfying (for different reasons than 12, so don't worry there). If you want to go for a hard 1cc, I actually recommend going for it on 15 after you do 13 and 14 on normal since it's not as much of a difficulty jump between normal and hard in that game

Nice, good 1cc on sa, most of the games you've yet to play are some of the easier ones (except 15 but pointdevice mode is so fun). 13 gives you almost no resorces but most stages are relatively easy when compared to other games, 14 gives you quite a few resources though so that's nice. i would also recommend trying out 12.8 GFW, as while it is a spin-off it's structured more like a mainline game (but with 3 stages and 1 extra rather than 6 stages and 1 extra) that being said it's one of the harder ones.

I’m so happy to see more people giving Touhou a shot! As a disclaimer, there’s plenty of Touhou fans who aren’t good at the games (like me!) and from my perspective as someone who doesn’t put the time in to get good, your thoughts are totally reasonable to me. Kanako is one of my favorite characters, but I don’t think I ever had the time to beat Sanae. I have no clue how I cleared Stage 4 the first time around. ALSO CONGRATS ON YOUR 1CC!! I was so happy when I did my first 1cc allll the way back in middle school, I can’t imagine how freeing it was for you to realize what’d happened! Regarding UFO, I’m sorry it was such a pain in the ass for you. I think you and other commenters said it the best, I applaud you for sticking to it for so long.
I’ve noticed this in the past- I won’t spoil her, but there is a boss in one of the later games that grew infamous and got criticized for being insanely difficult on easier difficulties somehow because her nonspells and spellcards on Easy and Normal had RNG patterns, but on Hard and Lunatic they had set patterns. The hate for her was so big at the time that my friend’s username for a while was ‘ihate[bossname]’. Everyone (including my friend) seems to have calmed down years since, and I think it was less genuine hatred and moreso aggravation towards how difficult the game was. I love her to bits, personally. She’s just a silly little guy. I’m curious to see how you’ll approach her, if you get far enough into the series. I think given your experience with UFO though, you’ll be ready for her.
ALSO LOL the comments about GD had me cackle. I was never a massive GD player either (i’m cursed with slow reaction time in general) but I can’t imagine how fucking mindblowing it felt coming across Okuu for the first time and hearing that same song. I’ve been through the exact same thing because I’ve been on the internet for so much of my life, and Touhou music is everywhere.
I know you said you’d be taking it at your own pace, but I hope that the pressure from people in comment sections doesn’t keep you from enjoying the games. there’s plenty of ways to appreciate Touhou, and playing the mainline/official games for 1cc is just one way. Your efforts have genuinely been really amazing, and I love hearing new and fresh thoughts!
I’d love to see you play the other games.. I guess it’s time I go back and watch the first video in the meantime!

    @davidjones8193 Год назад +4

Very well-made and enjoyable video. And congratulations on your SA 1CC! I'm glad you enjoyed the games enough to stick with them to this point.
Regarding the difficulty of MoF, I think you've answered it pretty well yourself. The games' survival difficulties are compared for a 1CC on default settings. At least from my experience, a game like PCB with its long stages and limited bombs, despite the borders, gives you a lot more chances to make mistakes and starve yourself out of resources, especially with only 3 starting lives, while you can almost ignore most sections in MoF by bombing through them and restocking in no time. In addition, you probably already know this, but the 5th power level does not increase your power, being essentially a free bomb, which contributes to the game's resource leniency.
There's also the MarisaB bug another comment has mentioned which is quite funny if you want to try it yourself.
And about UFO, your criticisms are very fair, but like another comment has said, I do hope you'll come back to it later. It might seem impossible at first, but the UFOs are very consistent after you develop a route. Routing hard sections using UFO bullet cancels can help you skip a lot of them, and give you enough resources to spam through Shou as well.
With that said, good luck and hope you have fun on the rest of your journey through this series (and maybe the rest of the genre if you're interested).

I'm glad you finally 1cc SA, one of the 3rd hardest game I ever played
(I'm a former experienced bullet hell player here before I play touhou in past years ago so this is a note of reviews)
MoF was just easy but not as easiest as IN, in that game you might wanna start learn how to dodge because of these patterns and not many even myself have a problem of that game other than SA, UFO, and LoLK.
In SA, I find it myself shit and hell when I first played but after playing only few like 5 attempt I managed to 1cc and so extra in 2 year ago, these horror stories were true by the time you play it and playing lunatic makes you go insane about it since the pattern are extremely difficult.
UFO was the 2nd hardest game you ever play that made you have a biggest issues where lasers are spammed because the game say UFO in short, the mechanic is what I don't even care and worried about it anymore since I'm a mainly dodging focusing other than the bosses itself than group of enemies. Shou? All I find her was just that hard enough and that final boss made me feels like I'm about to face the greatest boss that people ever seen with it's sunset background behind of her holy shit, she is not a joke but my attempt of 1cc is 3 than my SA's attempt because I find SA and UFO enjoyable and at the same time filled with hell out of time and space. But actually LoLK have that everything than these two.
Also once you reach playing LoLK get ready to get your ass kicked so bad in eternal hell far more worse than doom eternal, there is two modes mechanic which is one is about checkpoint mode with no need continue, while the one is legacy mode and it's the same as every bullet hell filled with like arcade bullet hell like dodonpachi daijouou and I pick that mode first when playing LoLK first time.
And what's make it worse I 1cc every bullet hell game Except LoLK, just that game

Amazing video just like the last one! I'm glad to see you finally back. Subterranean Animism is also my favorite in the series so I'm glad you loved it. Though I did wish you'd mention the main thing that makes the game unique from the rest of the series: that being the super unique shot types and the special abilities each gives. Also, small correction, you don't need to clear boss patterns to get life pieces, you just need to not get hit. So bombing is allowed.
I think people say MoF is an easier game because it's simple. Less to think about and strategize. Simple mechanics and some old ones stripped away. Th10 was supposed to be a bit of a soft reboot of the series in terms of gameplay. So no complex systems that take a lot of time and strategy to really utilize.
As for the continue system of these three games, I absolutely agree with your take that it really sucks the fun out of playing. I genuinely believe it's easier to just 1CC than trying to clear them with bad ending, because no way in hell I'm gonna clear any stage 6 boss with less than three hits. Good news though, th13 and onward return to the old continue system from th06, th07, and th08.
I actually really like UFO a lot. It's definitely in my top ten favorite games in the series and one I come back to frequently. As a UFO enjoyer, allow me to share some tips that you may not have known about.
    1. The UFOs that change color every couple of seconds will actually NOT change if you are near them. The timer will be put on pause until you either collect them or move out of that range. Knowing that, you don't always need to make super risky maneuvers to try to collect them at a certain color. You can just stay somewhat in the general area and wait for it to bounce back down so you can collect easier.
    2. The UFOs aren't as random as it may initially seem. First, the cycle of which they change is always the same. Red -> Blue -> Green -> Red. If you are wanting to collect red UFOs, you can look to see where the green ones are, since you know they will be switching in the next couple seconds. Second, the order of which they appear from the enemies is actually entirely consistent, and you can plan for it in your routing. To some extent, even the patterns of movement can be learned and predicted if you are very intentional in what you are doing (where you are moving, what are you shooting, and where/when you are shooting them.)
    3. Fill up UFOs. I haven't watched your streams so I don't know if you already know this, but you get two different rewards, one from filling it up with point/power items, the other from shooting it down. Red: filling -> life piece, shooting -> life piece. Green: filling -> a FULL BOMB, shooting -> bomb piece. Blue: shooting without filling -> x6.0 score multiplier, shooting after filling -> x8.0 score multiplier. Rainbow: filling -> additional UFO, shooting -> additional UFO.
    4. Bombing. There is a lot more strategy in UFO when it come to bombing in UFO than most other games. The main thing, you can use bombs as tool to help you collect UFOs of a certain color, since you get invincibly for a couple seconds. The fact that you get a full bomb and an additional bomb piece by filling and shooting should be something you think about and use. Think, if you use a bomb to collect three green UFOs, and manage fill and shoot them; you overall got free invincibility, cleared bullets, got lots of items, and didn't lose a bomb but actually GAINED a bomb piece. And of course, you can use the bomb strat to collect red UFOs too. Just be mindful how how many bombs you have. So a general loop, you could build up enough bombs to then safely collect life pieces.
    5. Improvisation. UFO out of all the games really demands that the player look at a situation they didn't plan for and figure out a solution in time. A good example, the rainbow UFOs. They exist so you can still make use of the junk that you normally would want to avoid. (For you, probably the blue UFOs) The main thing you should consider is that they give up to two additional UFO upon filling and shooting. So creating a rainbow UFO can act as you "re-rolling the dice" to give yourself a new/better set of UFOs to try to collect. It may be tempting to only go for red UFOs and ignore everything else, but that generally won't end well for you. You need to try to make use of everything the game gives you, which can be a complex, difficult task to do.
    6. Taking hit. UFO definitely punishes you the most from taking damage compared to almost every other game when it comes to power, compared to most other games. This is a general rule of thumb for nearly all Touhou games but USE ALL YOUR BOMBS BEFORE YOU TAKE A HIT. Any bomb left in your possession when taking a hit are essentially wasted resources, whether you lose them or not.
    7. Tip for dodging lasers, you need to look way up to the source to see where they are going to be. There's isn't really much good I can say when it comes to the UFO lasers. Even I can still get blindsided by them if I'm not paying a lot of attention, and that's not fun even for me. At least you can rest easy knowing all games after th12 fix that problem by adding an extra dot to the start of every laser that makes them much easier to spot in your peripheral vision.
It's a shame you didn't enjoy playing this one. UFO offers a lot of player choice when it comes to strategy, which is why I love it so much. I hope you may come back to this one and give it another chance with these tips. If now soon, maybe down the line when you're general skill in Touhou and your ability to improvise has improved. If you play smart, UFO can become one of the easier games; you can totally make it to Muarsa in stage 4 with maxed out lives.
Last video I gave some tips about th08. I'm just curious, but have you had a chance to go back to that one? If so how was your experience with the tips I gave, if you remembered them?

Don't worry about the long comment lol, like I said I tend to read everything anyway! If you watch my stream vod of UFO you'll know which of these tips I've already known about since I don't really point them out in the video, but of course I don't wanna force people to sit through it so imma just reply here:
      1. Yes this is something I knew about already, it's just that I'm a bit of a wuss and have a hard time chasing down UFOs through a wave of bullets. (Although I do have footage of me doing this, ig I just didn't use it)
      2. This is also something I knew about and was something I already took into consideration during my runs.
      3. Like the last tip, this is also something I knew about.
      4. This is something I have done in my runs, but a lot of the time I tend to just save the bombs for bosses. (but this comment tells me it's more worth to bomb UFOs so oh well)
      5. This is something I knew about but never really applied. I really only grab the rainbow if there's no other options and I need a UFO spawn to clear a wave projectiles.
      6. The prior entries already taught me this rule the hard way :')
      7. Good to know that I'm not the only one that eats crap at lasers, and I'll keep this tip in mind going into future games.
(So yes I actually am pretty knowledgeable when it comes to UFO's mechanics, I just suck)
Lastly, unfortunately I haven't really went back to IN all that much. The only thing I've really done in that game after posting the last video is grab footage of me fighting Kaguya. However I will most likely 1CC all the games in the future anyway so yes, I will be going back to IN and UFO :)

When I did my first run through of the touhou series on easy (every game with every character and every route, no 1ccs, just survival), I 1cc'd every single Touhou 10, 11 and 12 run - only because of that damn reset-to-the beginning-of-the-stage thing making it way too unfeasible to not do so and just play for survival normally.
Definitely agree that Touhou 10 is way harder (on easy and normal) than 6. Never understood this opinion. Then again I'm apparently one of the few people that gets trashed all day long in Touhou 7 and cannot fathom how it is suposedly easier than Touhou 11, so what do I know.
Anyway, great you're having fun with these, looking forward to you playing more touhou and maybe some classic stuff like Battle Garegga or Batsugun and/or some modern stuff like Danmakai or Drainus.

I look forward to the next video, since 13 was newly released when i first got into the series and it was the first one I played. Plus, I really like 14's resource system and boss patterns. for 15, I'd recommend using the pointdevice mode, since the game is designed with it in mind and playing on classic is way harder than the rest of the series imo.
Based in what you said about enjoying memorizing spells and learning the bosses, it would probably be worth checking out the "scene" style games, since they focus on mastering individual spells. those being 9.5, 12.5, and 14.3 within the range covered in this video and the next. 14.3 in particular is one of my absolute favorites in the series as a whole

3:00 - Mountain of Faith isn't easy.. Well.. If you just only getting in the game series
Judging by my own experience, it felt like previous games were much easier
For me it felt easy after revisiting to 1cc this game after completing all the other games
7:09 - ahahaha that's literally me facing Kanako for the first time
8:28 - relatable, for the first time I played Subterranean Animism I was completely destroyed on the 3rd stage while in previous games I was able to at least reach 4th stage not continuing
10:30 - YES, when I first heard it I was like "Wait... It was Touhou all along??!!"
The only thing is, it flashbacked me to Flawless Wings of Yatagarasu by gls
    One thing about 1cc'ing
Even tho I've never really played STG games, but played bullet-hell like Enter the Gungeon
I started consistently 1cc'ing games after I decided to see alternate final boss of Touhou 8 and after getting to Touhou 13
Starting from 13 and all the way to 18 they all was 1cc'ed consequently and somewhere after Touhou 16 I started revisiting previously not 1cc'ed games
So what I wanna say is
When I was watching the first video I was thinking that you'll start 1cc'ing the games also somewhere at Touhou 13, considering how you were playing
But I'm impressed you were able to 1cc Subterranean Animism, congrats!
Even I haven't 1cc'ed this game yet, but at the same time I've not tried to do so, for now xd
Just two days ago finished Mountain of Faith
(also fist time I was playing SA, I spent like 3 hours to finally defeat Utsuho, that was a nightmare, same thing happened with Byakuren in UFO)
11:57 - welcome to laser show
I really liked the soundtrack of this game, but it was very hard for me to complete, although I did completed it
    But not 1cc'ed yet
For now my top of hardest Touhou games is:
    1. Touhou 15, only just because extra stage, main game I 1cc'ed on legacy mode in two attepmts, however extra stage was complete hellish nightmare, I was trying to complete this extra stage for an entire month until eventually succeded oh my god

UFO is easily the hardest in the series for 1CC. (For no-miss no-bomb however, Touhou 15 takes the cake). I filled my entire scoreboard with stage 6 fails before I finally 1CC’d. I despise the game as much as you do, especially Shou’s fight. Curvy lasers are the worst bullet type in all of Touhou. That being said however, there is something about Murasa’s fight that I find extremely fun and enjoyable. She’s probably one of my favorite boss fights in all of Touhou if I’m being honest. Not to mention her theme is an absolute banger.
I fully agree with what you said about SA. I feared that game when I first started playing it, but the more I practiced and learned the bosses, the more fun and rewarding it became. The game is fairly consistent and not too terribly hard to learn if you just spend some time with it. Orin is considered the run killer which is mostly true, but she has a lot of funny safe strats to learn. Also massive props for actually achieving a 1CC in SA, this early in your Touhou career no less.
When it comes to MoF, the game overall is pretty easy, besides the usual stage 4, stage 4 midboss and Kanako’s final spell of course. You get a lot of resources to work with, and you can bomb pretty much every pattern in the game and still 1CC. That being said, it is not the most beginner friendly game imo. People always recommend to start with 10, but the fact that MoF changes a few core mechanics of the game such as the continue system and the bombing system to become more punishing than assisting is why I generally steer people away from that game at first and tell them to try 6 7 or 8 if they want the raw Touhou experience with little to no gimmicks. MoF is a great early “next step” game to becoming better, as you mentioned it forces you to learn how to stream and it throws a lot of micro-dodging at you which are very important skills to learn not only with Touhou but any shmup you’ll play. It’s a good game to play early on, but definitely not first.
Overall great video! I can’t wait to see you try Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom. It’s among the more difficult games but I recommend playing Legacy mode instead of Pointdevice as you get a TON of lives. (My first LoLK 1CC I died 15 times and still cleared with 4 lives in stock lol)

touhou 10 is easy not on the bullet pattern side, it's easy to 1cc (and no i'm not talking about marisa bug). the bomb-power mechanic in this game is actually a blessing in disguise. you can easily acquire bomb since it's tied to your power and the game give you 1 extra reserve power for bomb. it's extremely useful to wear down bosses' health quickly, especially during spell cards. this is the only game i clear lunatic difficulties with all the characters, and knowing when to bomb is the key on easily beating this game.

Touhou 1cc (sometimes) player here, I started the series in order and Normal difficulty first before 1cc'ing all of them on Hard, so I feel urged to write this comment!
I start playing the game without continues and that I must absolutely 1cc a game in Normal before moving on to the next one. As mentioned in the video, having Continues makes Touhou 6 much easier. And on the flip side, 1cc'ing much harder. People generally recommend new players to start with Touhou 7, and so, there were weeks of struggling.
Once I got through, Touhou 7 seems much easier, but still retains a bit of difficulty. You can see your hitbox but now the bullets are denser, this is where I learn to use bombs more (as Sakuya gives an extra bomb per life/death).
After 1cc'ing Touhou 7, Touhou 8 becomes a cakewalk. Forgiving bomb system, some characters with powerful shots, not much to say, Touhou 9 in itself is weird, and I find ease in 1cc'ing Normal and Hard mode, the challenge is in Lunatic Difficulty. I try to make Touhou 9 fun by playing the Extra Stage without using bombs at all, so it makes the gameplay similar to a normal Touhou game: focusing on dodging whatever is being in thrown at you, but with half the screen.
The difficulty spike you feel in Touhou 10 is absolutely justified as its continues are reworked. On top of that, I struggled with Touhou 10 as well. I used to use one or two bombs for the hard parts in previous games, but in Touhou 10, it quickly devolves into a bomb spam as I don't have enough Power to defeat the bosses. And similar to your experience, Stage 5 (Sanae) is one difficult boss. I had to practice this boss like how I practised against Sakuya in Touhou 6, just so that I can progress.
Touhou 11 is where I hit a hard stuck. It took me months for me to 1cc this game as you mentioned in the video, it is hard. Stage 2, 3, 4, and 5, then 6, I struggled on each of those stages at some point, struggling at stage 5 for the longest time. I'm so glad for you that you 1cc'd that beast, that is very rewarding! :D Touhou 11 is the game where I am forced to adapt and learn new skills I didn't have before, such as micrododging, weaving into tight spaces, finding safe spots, as well as running around the top half of the screen. (Looking at you Orin.)
Your dislike for Touhou 12 is probably the general opinion of the Touhou community as well. It is hard to tell the brain "no, you don't need that UFO" because it seems rewarding to get those. I don't get the UFOs, I have less lives and bombs. I try to get them, I lose my focus. It didn't take me as long as Touhou 11, but again it's because I have 1cc'd the previous games that were random and brutal (Touhou 6 and 7). I got stuck for quite a long time too on Stage 5, Shou intrododuced me to difficult curvy lasers ;-; some of Byakuren's spells are also menacing. They were memorable for their difficulty and the "unfun" moments you mentioned, but I remember them for their awesome music :3
Having played the games ahead, I can give a small spoiler on what to expect in the next titles, although I'm a 1cc player so it may vary.
Touhou 13 would be a literal breeze, I 1cc the game on Normal and Hard on my first try (even though I seem to not be able to 1cc Hard again for a while). It has enjoyable moments, its rough parts can be fairly bombed to safety, and I hope you have the same fun experience! (And there's a cool mechanic that you'll have to see for yourself)
Touhou 14 is where things get slightly more difficult again, with an interesting mechanic that forces you to play well, but not the "play well" that you usually think of. You'd find the mechanic almost as challenging as the bosses themselves, and you'd probably hate the Stage 4 of this game a lot XD (I do not know how the continue system works for this one.)
Touhou 15, no. If you can have fun on this game, that's amazing. I predict you'd find this even more frustrating than Touhou 12 and that you can put the game down or even skip this until you feel you got better at bullet hell games. And the only easy, safe way to play this game is with one character, using other characters is just incredibly hard.
After the hell that is Touhou 15, Touhou 16 gives you another easy nice feeling. Because of my attempts to 1cc Normal of Touhou 15, I've almost entirely forgotten how to carefree bomb the hard parts, so I struggled a bit. Once I learned how to use bombs again, I found 1cc'ing Touhou 16 to be easy, and I think you'd find this game easy and fun as well.
Touhou 17 is where the difficulty ramps up again, with a mechanic similar to UFO, but not crucial for resources. I predict you'd also find this game frustrating, but clearable. I cleared it on my first few attempts and didn't remember much about the game.
Touhou 18 is where the new mechanic is central to the game. I won't spoil it, but if you are spoiled, go and have a lot of fun on this game. The start is rough, but the game gets easier the more time you spend on it!

Although there are a lot of different opinions and takes on which games are the hardest, easiest, fun and frustrating, usually the general consensus leans towards the same 4+1
Being TH08 and TH13 the easiest games, with TH08 often considered ZUN's magnum opus and TH13 easy at its core instead of mechanically (you'll see when you try it)
And TH12 & TH15 (+TH12.8 Fairy Wars) generally considered nightmare fuel...
One because of the UFOs, and the other because of circles... Be it rings, spirals, or moons...
An acquaintance of mine that plays for scoring usually says that while TH15 is the hardest overall, TH12 in lunatic is the absolute pinnacle of difficulty in the series...
The extra, Fairy Wars, is because you either master it's core gimmick, which is ice, or you just die... That same acquaintance said that if TH12 lunatic is the last frontier, trying to do Iceless Fairy Wars is pure madness, possible only by achieving perfection, and that at that point, you are better off becoming a Tibetan monk or something, because its easier to achieve Nirvana
In any case, I'm surprised you didn't taked the chance to talk about TH11 extra, since you managed to 1cc the game....

  • @letsplaytodayusa
    @letsplaytodayusa Год назад

Yeah, when people talk about Mountain of Faith being one of the easiest games in the series (and they do usually put Perfect Cherry Blossom in that category too) they're talking about the bullet patterns, and how easy it is to get through the game without continuing. Its punishing continue system as well as its power being linked to bombs makes it a nightmare if those two mechanics were the crutches that you used to beat the prior games in the series. Bullet pattern-wise, nothing in MOF stands up to Remilia, and even the worst bosses before the last one aren't as hard as Sakuya or Patchouli, but the resource management system really hit you hard here.
The next two games after that? Well, they're well known for being absurdly difficult; Subterranean Animism has a more difficult than usual Stage 2 boss and then puts you into the gauntlet of Satori (depending on character choice), the many, many Orin fights and what is arguably the hardest stage in the series in Stage 5, and a final boss in Utsuho that is absolutely BRUTAL for normal mode standards. Funnily enough, she is also the one that falls off the hardest if you go up difficulty levels; on Lunatic she's one of the easiest final bosses in the series with an extremely weak back half comparatively.
UFO combines what is IMO the worst resource system in general and an awful one for newbies to handle along with one of 3 or 4 games that has a claim to the hardest game in the series (EoSD mainly due to randomness and Remilia, SA mentioned above, LoLK was inspired by I Wanna Be The Guy so you know what it's about). In exchange for a much easier first half than SA, UFO's back half gauntlet notably goes up a notch at the final boss; Byakuren is one of the hardest in the series...but is the opposite of Utsuho, in that on Normal and lower she's one of the easier ones. But the amount of curvy lasers this game throws at you makes it still not easy even on normal, and one of the absolute worst on Lunatic or Hard.

@@himkoto249 I am not particularly interested in your statements that "I were able to complete the 1cc Lunatic + no bomb challenge", I can also say that I went through the easiest parts of the franchise perfectly and so what? (besides, when I said that I have 1cc lunatic in all games, it was in the context of "my experience before playing Lolk" just like you who played UFO after the first six 1cc Lunatics, and not in the context of "my achievement for everything time"). I understand that this does not cancel the experience of other players and their words, which you completely deny. It's also quite ironic to hear you suggest playing as Sanae and Reisen because it makes this game easier, when most of the 1cc you're betting is Reimu. So the question is when you set 1cc Lunatic Lolk on Reisen was it because the game is easy or because the game forced you to use her? For some reason it seems to me that the second option is more realistic. Otherwise, you know, a funny situation comes out: Hecatia is considered the most difficult extra boss of the Windows era - "people are idiots, they don't understand that Hecatia is the easiest extra boss, you take Reisen and pass on the first try, like the rest of Lolk", are you here trying to say this? (In addition, as I said, Reisen will make the game easy only in the Extra and final stages - since only here there are the most bullets and micro dodge, and as a result, only here her ability really makes sense, in the rest of the game, the players are about the same as for Reimu or Marisa often try to pass the stage, mostly just dodging, but yes, Sanae op, this is indisputable.) And besides, I may surprise you with a "top secret fact", but if the game forces you to playing as an obviously stronger character, use an op weapon or a combination of moves, then this, on the contrary, is evidence of difficulty, because in more fair conditions you would obviously suffer in agony. In addition, returning to the experience of people and their statements, I have repeatedly seen seemingly stupid advice to “take ufo more often”, which I mentioned by the way in the comment above, and also that, although they said that it was very difficult, but without much concern. With respect to Lolk, as I already said, I have not seen a single person who would not despise this game because of the difficulty, and it does not matter whether it was a beginner who did not have much experience in danmaku or professionals like the same Jaimers, Lolk everyone hates. Well, for the future you will see an idiot in the mirror.

I like to think it was fate that Buddhism was the theme of the game with the most agonizing mechanic to endure.
Thankfully the Taoists in 13 offer a reprieve from that suffering.
( i always hear People say SA or UFO or lolk when they talk about the hardest. pattern for pattern it's probably lolk; but UFO is the only one that people actually sound upset about when they say it.)
It's UFO card in Unconnected Marketeers even memorialized the whole mechanic as "Annoying"

There's many different ways to be "hard". Some of them are actually GOOD ways to be hard(like LoLK training you to learn patterns to a T bc most of them are static or predictable\easy gimmik to catch on. Or like SA making you starve on resources while encouraging you to get better at survival), but some ways of being hard are "bad". Just like making a frustrating mechanic to go hand by hand with high skill demand for the game in UFO.
It doesn't mean that the game is bad by itself, and there ARE ways to enjoy it. But it was a bad way to make it "hard" with no "learning comeback". Even LoLK had to teach you to do some memorization and planning and it at least had an easy to understand mechanic, but UFO can't teach you anything new with its mechanics in the long run(i don't consider "git gud and use the mechanic or starve and die" to be a valuable lesson for the whole franchise)
If you look at the series, you should notice that every new mechanic is usually helping you learn something new about the genre and help you learn some basics. Like TH7 it's item managment, both TH8 and, somewhat, TH7 - focused and unfocused playstyle, TH9 - timings and reaction, TH10 - power\bomb management, TH11 - survivability, TH13 - carefulness and planning, TH14 - risk evaluation and item border, TH15 - memorization and reaction... All those lessons are usually can be still used in other games in the series. But not the TH12 one. Or, at the very least, it's not something that can be used for the beginners.

-Why MoF is easy: Marisa B is glitched and she DESTROYS bosses. I I think if you get between 3.5 and 3.9, you get the glitch (unless the patch is installed).
    -Congrats on SA!
-did you know that there is a virus that takes your computer hostage until you beat UFO? (also, I think this is when the antivirus began thinking that Touhou is a virus)
-Those last 2 games are considerated by some the hardest games
    Now, some spoiler free advice:
Touhou 13 is pretty easy, there is a mechanic that will make you invisible for a moment
Touhou 14 can give you a lot of resources, you will need them for the last 2 stages
Touhou 15 is Hell and I don't know if it was coincidence that it was the same year that Undertale was out... Anyways, If the fps is bellow 40 maybe you will survive (also play at the max size)... Some consider the hardest one!
Touhou 16 ok, idk much about this one, but I think sumer is the best season
Touhou 17 is pretty normal for dificulty but you can get distracted by the objects like in UFO (but I think they are less problematic and more useful)
Touhou 18 has cards and it's super fun!

Sorry if someone else has pointed this out already, but in case you visit UFO again in the future:
Shou's spells, while complicated, are actually all learnable and routable, except for the 2nd. Her first spell is completely static and has 0 RNG.
Her 3rd spell has a couple of different variations and does rely on your own positioning, but it CAN still be routed eventually. Unfortunately there's no way to consistently practice each variation, though.
And in her final spell, the fireballs always "unfold" in the same way, just in different spots. So you make the same movements each time, just with a different start point. The blue waves and red waves behave slightly differently from one another, but it's still fairly consistent.
No such luck for her non-spells, though. The last one has a cheese strat but I think it only works on Hard and Lunatic.

UFO is such a meme. I 1CC'd it, but I don't feel like I actually beat any of the later bosses. Once you learn how to abuse the UFO system in the early levels, you can stockpile so many lives that you max out around the middle of stage 4, and then basically just cross your fingers and ride the wave of excess resources until the end.

I strongly disagree with you on UFO since it is pretty much my favorite Touhou game. I gotta say that when i first played it i kinda had the same opinion as you, but as i got better at these games over the years i gotta say that UFO has some of my favorite patterns, they just feel really unique and challenging to me while also being fair. The UFO mechanic is also really fun since you can always decide what resources you wanna have, but it can be annoying when even just dodging the bullets is giving you so much trouble already, it is a gimmick that gets more fun the more skill you have. Besides that i think that it has some of the coolest looking characters and it overall just has a really nice presentation, espacially Stage 6 with the heart beats in the music that are synched with when you reach the boss

but the result of me playing my first normal level in Touhou maybe around 25% I can finish the stage especially Touhou 12 which is actually good but it seems to me that it is very difficult and the system for picking up the ufo is very troublesome (for me for Sleepless San I don't know), but I don't know when I can finish Touhou 12 or other games at the normal level.
(additional notes: sorry if I write too long for Sleepless San and congratulations for the 1cc Touhou 11 plus I also didn't expect you to be a fan of the ost Okuu (Utsuho Reijui) (sorry Sleepless San didn't mean to joke or just know, but I don't know about this but see i can only tell from the your RUclips thumbnail that it's from touhou 11 and one of them is the Okuu (final boss) ost which is the most exciting to hear and I'm one of who like that ost Sleepless San :) ) btw keep up the enthusiasm for the touhou video Sleepless San :)

UFO you really love it or you really hate it. I choose both. The attacks, the characters and the mechanic they really stand out. Throwing giant hands, anchors lasers and stuff + god music. But it is extremely hard. I find the random patterns a challenge and also let you practice your reaction time. But it is so hard and some attacks are completely bs. The next games are going to be easier (not LoLK though xD)

The caveat to 10 being one of the easiest game's in the series is that it's partially because of how exploitable bombs are. There are so many difficult sections of the game where you can bomb and almost immediately recover all of your power and this isn't even considering your shot damage maxes out at 4 but you can go up to 5 for a free bomb to hold onto. It just really trivializes the game to where I can frequently get to Kanako on my first life from abusing the bomb system on normal.
Subteranean animism is just a solid entry difficulty and all, I find the bomb system very aggravating with how the game starves you of power items but it's still fun to play.
UFO is deceptive, you CAN route it in that you find good sections to try to spawn a UFO on and when to bullet cancel the screen with big UFOs but it is a tough one and takes a lot of trial and error to find a good route for yourself. Which tbf a lot of what I consider good sections to try to grab UFOs on are still technically random bullet patterns and you may still find those very difficult depending on how good you are at react dodging. Also yeah, Murasa, especially Shou, and Byakuren can be monsters when you're learning them. It's a completely fair opinion on the game, even knowing I can 1cc it I don't find much enjoyment in playing it.

SA actually gives you life pieces for just not dying, bombing is allowed, so there's nothing wrong with bombing in it sometimes. UFO is basically the most arcade-esque Touhou game in terms of how design is approached: you have to route, you have to adapt and you have to play like a madman. Liking it really depends on what you want from a game. That said, LLS and MS are still best games >:(

SA is like, top 3 hardest Touhou bad choice there but I guess you learn by getting into trouble lol
UFO is bewteen the top 5 hardest touhous the easiest but the life system is so complicated and distracting that it easily ranks up to the top 3 also.
Though I do understand the problem you had with the continues, luckily from TD onwards continues work like IN and before.
I do reccomend checking FanGames also, because some of them really nailed the balance of patterns and difficulty like Wonderful Waking World (on Steam) and Sapphire Panlogism (Free)

I feel like Subterranean Animism difficulty lies behind the special abilities for the secondary characters, some are pretty bland but others like yukari's teleport if you know when and where to use it, it becomes a waay easier game. but since the abilites is exclusive to this game they become kinda of an aftethought when you play, so you end uo forgetting about them making you life so much harder.

Don't listen to people who say you didn't beat the games. People beat a game when they reach the goal they set for themselves.

UFO is a game that people usually hate at first because everyone dies while accidentally collecting the stupid useless blue UFOs, but the UFO spawn is actually the same every time, so you can practice it.

So I'm one of those ppl who found MoF to be one of the easier games, and I can concur that it's exactly as you say. The change in the continue system and bombs are kinda hell if you're primary goal is to simply clear the game. However, since I've always been focused on 1CCs and have always been averse to using bombs (instead focusing mostly on dodging), those things never really affected me. Instead, I always compared the games difficulty in terms of the raw difficulty to dodge, and in my experience, the much slower bullets in MoF tended to make the dodging a decent bit easier than the earlier games, even tho there were a lot more of them.
