I wish I would have seen this sooner. As soon as I heard you say the battery indicator was dropping g when it got hot I knew it was the starter. Same thing happen to mine. Over time i started to smell a burnt electronics smell. But the starter looked perfect. GM changed it and the problem was gone. My car was a stock 2016 SS.
My car started doing this shortly after heads cam and lifter install. Might need to install a new starter when I stab my built motor in. Old motor just threw a rod out of the block…
I had this same thing happened was checking out your prior video happen to my corvette starter did not want to start the car up swapped out the starter twice. Turned out to be an auxillary cooler wire that was touching ground on the battery cable that leads to the starter nice video!
I know it's packed in there, maybe when Cunningham has it possibly looking into aux fans or a fan switch for when you're sitting still to force air through? Just kind thinking out loud. Good luck, love the vids and your dedication to the channel.
Super glad your over your cold and your car's pro charger is okay. Sounds like it's puter putting way too much timing during start. Maybe just need a heat shield for starter. I had a problem like that with heat frying the starter every 3 or 4 months. Made a heat shield and ran duct to blow on starter like road race cars for brake cooling fix it. Hoping just a starter made day after a holiday by a hang over Canadian...ha ha ha! Glad y'all are good!!! Old guy from Georgia!! Good video!
Can't even keep mine running long enough to mod... very jealous! Mine keeps shuttering even with new TC..😑.. getting run-a-round.. so, prob getting rid of it.. love your videos, love the car! Best of luck!
Heat is one of the main issues with Starters here in Dubai, almost every Camaro owner I know had the starter replaced.. But also found out to have a connection issue starting from the Fuse Box Ground.. But never the less changing the starter solved it but expect it to come back again.
Hey Matt, Just an interesting point. Years ago when I had my 70 T/A it had an LS7 454 with monster power and I actually carried a deck of cards because my starter would get so hot ( glowing red to be exact ) we would have to wait for it to cool down enough for it to engage. So yeah it happens. If we couldn't wait we would push start it and away we would Go. Love the vids and have learned so much, thanks man.
The procharger noise is caused by the heated air producing high positive pressure inside the procharger. Let the car fully warm up and release the hot air inside the procharger. It worked for mine.
Man that make since. I just got back from Cunningham today. It's Freacking hot. I stop for gas and I sometimes get slow starts after my performance upgrades. I have a stage 3 package with long tube headers. I havent gotten no charging issues but slow starts definitely few times. Specially after a short drive and traffic trips. Crazy. I also have a A/C issue because the extra heat. Need to drop some Freon pressure. Right now the A/C is turning off because of high pressure. I am taking it in to A/C shop tomorrow after the 2 cars and coffee meets tomorrow
There's actually a class action lawsuit for the 2010-2020 camaros on the starter bc people with full stock camaros are having issues starting their cars due to the engines notorious heat soak. I'm so late to this video but it makes so much sense and im mad I didnt realize it sooner.
Your aftermarket hood could be the culprit, there is a lot less ventilation for heat to rise and escape the engine bay with your current hood. That Skorpion style hood is designed to pull air in while moving whereas the stock one has hood vents around the hat itself allowing heat to escape easily while at a standstill. Maybe think about getting a ZL1 Style CF hood with the large ventilation areas around the insert, ACS sells what looks like a pretty good quality one to me.
I had a 1972 Cheyenne with a 402 big block and previous owner put headers on it and had slow start when hot. I made a heat shield for the starter and problem solved!
I had my starter go out because the battery was bad. Replaced battery and starter and Everything works great now. If you have problems with starter again then it might be the alternator/battery.
Chevy has always been notorious for alternator and starter issues, especially on the bigger engines. Can't even tell you how many my family has had to replace over the years. Glad she's back fully restored and running full throttle again. PS. What happened to Cunningham Motorsports?
LethalGarage the heat does cause issues get them ceramic coated for heat inside and out and then wrapped to preserve all parts wires etc also keeping those underhood temps down look at ur airfilter does the procharger suck in all that hot air. Imagine how hot those headers get with the procharger providing boost . Horsepower is heat like the calloway engineers says watch the callaway sledgehammer vid
I bought a sixth gen camaro ss and after 30,000 miles the starter started dragging like that same way lethal camaro did ,the car was never modified ,they warranteed the starter and later that month i bought a new ZL1 camaro ,man it was the greatest car i ever drove. It was car nirvana. Getcha some...
i had a built 1987 trans am and had same problem and found out the headers was baking the starter had to get special starter and it never did it again.
My car does the same thing sometimes in regards to a sluggish start but its short trips with my amp and subwoofers eating away at that battery. I bet starting your car with a longer serpentine belt and another object to rotate takes more amps from initial start and short trips don't allow full charge to compensate. not sure about why something wouldn't rotate unless bearings failed from heat like you said. keep us posted, thanks
Matt, it sounds like you don't have it zeroed in on the actual problem, but my car is very slow starting from time to time as well. It starts every time though. Some of my friends run headers or headers and a roots style blower, none of them have the slow start issue that I am seeing.
I want to start off by saying thanks. Thank you for reminding me why I dont want to buy an SS and start modifying it. Had my share of radom issues on a 2jz swap. I'd rather take the $18000 that was spent on upgrades and buy a ZL1. Hopefully (fingers crossed) that will keep me on the track and out of the pit. Good luck to you sir.
By chance will you be doing a review of the BMR equipment installed before the engine work begins? Maybe a review on just how the car launches with the stock vs BMR rear suspension?
Definitely starter bro I went thru the same thing with my 5th gen. The headers cook the starter. It usually takes about 1 1/2 with a starter blanket. About 3 months no blanket
This is why supercharged Mustangs have vented hoods to bleed off excess engine heat. Maybe a manual switched fan setup would help you since you don't have a well vented hood.
LethalGarage keep us posted on the situation. But keep in mind that if you have ceramic coated headers it might damage the coating, you might be able to just wrap the section closer to the starter. Good luck
ALL YOU NEED IS A HEAT SHIELD FOR YOUR STATRER. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WHEN EVER YOU INSTALL HEADERS. PIT SOME DOUG THORLYS ON MY 72 CHEVY TRUCK. DID EXACTLY WHAT YOU DESCRIBE. SO PIT A START HEAT SHIELD NEVER HAD ANOTHER ISSUE WITH MY STARTER.
After watching this for the second time, my 2010 Camaro SS (stock and certified pre-owned) after super hot day of driving, stopngo traffic a slow to no start, had me worried. Started looking for battery issues, but no issues since that day, a few weeks later hot again and almost no start AGM batteries are a newer issue. The car computer would never show a bad battery,14.7 volts at start up hot or not then goes down a little. I hope this helps put a prospective on the battery end of things. thanks
Bro those cars have a smart charging system. Sometimes it charges the battery and sometimes it does not. This would explain the voltage meter jumping all over. My 2017 has done this before where it start kind of slow randomly but it always starts. And after it runs a few mins you can shut it off and it will start just fine. I just think the "smart charger isn't always so smart lol
I had cooling problems with my LSA conversion in my Chev SS sedan. Put high flow Derale dual fan kit instead of stock fans. Fixed my problems even on a 95 degree Florida day. Also have ceramic coated headers. Question. I looked at your video as close as I could. Is that your air intake up against your firewall? If it is, your IAT's must be quite high.
Just do me a favor and do some reading about how the cars altanator works and how it decides when it generates full voltage 14v and when it drops down to 10v-11v
Love your videos man. At the time of this build, we're you running a stock bottom end? I see you mention getting forged bottom end had head and valve work but can't figure out if you did pistons or rods, just not forged at this time. I have a 2017 2SS Fifty and want to go the centrifugal route as Im shooting for 550-570 rwhp. Just trying to figure out if I should build the motor at all. I was thinking of 6psi. I
LethalGarage, Matt if that’s true, then that’s a terrible indictment on GM building that Engine..they should’ve at least made the internals as durable as Fords 5.0 Roadrunner, & 5.0 Coyote Engines since that’s GM’s direct competition..add boost to Fords 5Liter, & put down 650WHP reliably with no issues whatsoever, & zero need to open the Engine at all..
Maybe I missed this part but...why was ur charger so loud if it was the starter ? I could almost see if ur alternator was making more noise, workin harder, but...the charger making noises and "Not" being the issue.?.
This doesn't explain the reason why the procharger was making noise and getting super hot... plenty of people run long tubes with your setup with zero issues. If the car can't sit and idel, thats a problem man. Hope you got it sorted out though.
Pro charger decided to tell us nothing was wrong with it and we were basically crazy all while sending a rebuilt unit which didn’t show any signs of the unit we pulled off.
@Lethalgarage damn man... that's insane... unfortunately, it doesn't surprise me. Well, I'm glad they sent you a rebuilt one, at least. No one seems to be on the up and up these days... love the car, though.
Glad you got your car all back together. I have one question. On your SW headers, did you go with 1 7/8" or 2" because of the Pro Charger? Do you think getting your headers Ceramic Coated will get rid of your issues with the hard starts??
With all the $ you dumped into your car you should have got a vented lighter weight hood. Like I did on my rip mods boosted 2003 Eclipse GT. You still should. Love the white mine was white with white oz lightweight racing rims.
If the EGT stays below 1360 degrees there should be no problem, no matter how built the engine is...sort of. What was the issue after all of your looking into the problem? Did you have a backpressure issue with the exhaust, maybe?
I have a bone stock 22 2ss 1le. Installed pi-x (with their hp rtd "canned" tune. Since its an RTD , I am restricted to remote tunes. Best dyno number was 555 but isssues with running lean at
Dude, I was going to comment on the last video and didn't because.... Well... I'm lazy. I took mine out to take some drone footage of donuts and "using up" the rest of my tires before I got new ones. Same exact issue..did some burn outs.. Car stalled.. Had to get it towed. Turns out it was a faulty starter and I don't have a proharger.. Its possibly just something with the starters they initially put in the cars..i have the same exact car as you but manual.
I got the same car as you and now you got me worried. mine is kinda slow to start, but I have one of the first models 2016 made in jan. Currently have 11,500 miles. Question, how many miles til you had that issue?
My 2016 SS does the SAME thing! Run in the gas station and come back out, car barely starts. 😡 changing starter ASAP Asked the dealership to change it a while back and they said “ they couldn’t duplicate the problem” 😡🤬
When you order long tube headers don't you have an option to use some type of heat reducing coating instead of just bare steel? I forgot what it was called
My 2010 did a very Similar thing. I replaced the starter and 10 months later it died again.I wrapped the header and put a heat Blanket on the starter. Still started slow.... I saw a spark coming from under the Hot wire Cover where the hot Wire Runs Up from the Battery. The connection bolt was 1/2 a turn loose.I tightened it and the car was perfect! It turns out the sparking killed the new starter selonoid! The car starts normal at any temp and the voltage gauge reads 13.5 and Dosen't Move!
Hey bud I have a 12 ss with same set up. Having some issues. Like to pick your brain on the issues. Can you shoot me a chat? I’d like ask you what size belt also I had that same sound. It went away when I took that motor cover off and changed the hood. I’m at 755 rwhp
whats up man i enjoy your videos keep up the good work. i was wandering if a could buy a lethal camaro shirt, if they're for sale, do you have a 4x. i have a 2017 zl1 red. would love to rock the shirt when i take my car out.
@lethalgarage Do you think I should forge my motor, just to make it more reliable with just headers, tune and intake? maybe a blower I wanna push around 600 hp but safely without having high maintenance or scared of something breaking
So you dont think I will run into any problems as a daily, I just want to maintain drivability, with some extra power without worrying about something breaking just like to know I been following your build since the start.
Yes u need a upgrade fuel system, it was weak. Im suprised u not getting a P0171 Trigger code. Anyways, yes u need a upgrade fuel system because u have a weak fuel system from that power.
I just bought a 2017 1ss with 16,000 miles on it. It has a rough idle. I took it to the dealer and they checked it said there were no codes and that these engines always have a rough idle. Is this true? Do these engines idle rough right from the factory ?
LethalGarage builds always make me nervous with unforeseen issues especially since my home town has absolutely no credibility when it comes to speed shops so if a build is to be done it would have to be out of town😢😬
Hey how high is your intake air temperature because that intake is like right next to the header to me it would seem to me it would just suck hot air but let me know if you get a chance thanks
When you r car is driving the delta drops within 5 degrees of the outside air. Most times it hovers about 90-100 on a 88-95 degree day. when its int he 70's it hovers in the 80's.
If your starter failed once, it'll fail again. Any electric motor will fail when overheated. If your headers aren't coated, you'll probably have to get them coated. When you say you have a shield, I'm assuming you mean you have a metal shield between the starter/heater. You coulld get a thicker one that would block/dissipate more heat. You could also wrap the starter: www.heatshieldproducts.com/lava-starter-shield
Pt.2 Your problem is not the starter. Your problem is the procharger but not the procharger. I see this alot at our shop. Wts happening is the procharger is generating so much power that exceeds what your car can handle at low end drives. Your having a delay in heat responses that is causing your end system to distort heat around the sides down to the starter and it condenses causing your starter to pull heat inside and distort it's own heat up causing a pit response start. There is only one way our shop managed to beat the heat In a sense the moisture from the heat causes your
Sagi Skins basically anything that is not inside the engine it's self that attaches to the car with bolts. Exhaust, intake, his pro charger, suspension. Etc
So it's not really fixed it just went away for now. This is why you don't rape your car with upgrades 100% you will have problems and 100% u won't use all that power ever. Save your money kids.
It needs a heat shield over the Starter Solenoid. GM cars have had that problem for ever. People would replace the starter and not put the heat shield back in because they thought it was a stupid piece of metal that did not do anything anyway. Then the problem would start. I would see this on a weekly basis back when I started in the auto field. I have seen people junk cars over this problem........
Glad to see your back in action and Kudos to ProCharger for taking care of you.. Customer Service is KING!!!
I wish I would have seen this sooner. As soon as I heard you say the battery indicator was dropping g when it got hot I knew it was the starter. Same thing happen to mine. Glad you got it sorta figured out. You've got an awesome machine! Looking forward to the next mod updates!
I realize it's quite off topic but do anybody know a good place to stream new movies online ?
@Zane Rafael Flixportal xD
@Lee Christopher thanks, I signed up and it seems to work :) I appreciate it !!
@Zane Rafael you are welcome :)
I love the content in this and the previous supercharger issues vid, very useful and reassuring information 👍 I thank you
So glad that the car is working fine now! Oh, and congratulations on the upcoming baby!
A engine problem like that can drive you nuts. Good job to ever figured that out, sounds like you found the problem.
Way to go Matt. Keep it up looking forward to seeing the complete motor built with the forged internals. Trust me you'll love it.
I know it's packed in there, maybe when Cunningham has it possibly looking into aux fans or a fan switch for when you're sitting still to force air through? Just kind thinking out loud. Good luck, love the vids and your dedication to the channel.

Good job on finding the problem! I take my comment from the "I cried video" starter was made on a Friday..haha
Hey Matt, Just an interesting point. Have you thought about wrapping or ceramic coating headers?
jasen ratnam to keep heat down so he doesn't burn up another starter.
jasen ratnam, what? Smh
n8_1le 👌
The procharger noise is caused by the heated air producing high positive pressure inside the procharger. Let the car fully warm up and release the hot air inside the procharger. It worked for mine.
Kinda makes you wonder how much heat the factory hood vents (which your car no longer has) let escape. Just a thought.
Crazy. Long tube headers will heat up your starter and cause problems. Most performance parts dealers sell wraps for starters.
There's actually a class action lawsuit for the 2010-2020 camaros on the starter bc people with full stock camaros are having issues starting their cars due to the engines notorious heat soak. I'm so late to this video but it makes so much sense and im mad I didnt realize it sooner.
I even made a video on it
Happened to me in my Corvette. I installed a PowerMaster Master Torque starter. Problem solved. No more embarrassing situations.
The rear side of the skorpion hood actually allows more air to escape. the overall IATs and air flow temps dropped once the hood was put on.
I had a 1972 Cheyenne with a 402 big block and previous owner put headers on it and had slow start when hot. I made a heat shield for the starter and problem solved!
Glad you got the car back running again!!!!

I agree with the heat shield. Very light and effective.
Have 2 on the car now. Had only the one from factory previously.
LethalGarage the heat does cause issues get them ceramic coated for heat inside and out and then wrapped to preserve all parts wires etc also keeping those underhood temps down look at ur airfilter does the procharger suck in all that hot air. Have the headers been Ceramic coated ? Cost me about $400 to have mine done . Looks good , helps with the heat and protects them long term

Built is better than bought so you know 😉
By chance will you be doing a review of the BMR equipment installed before the engine work begins? Maybe a review on just how the car launches with the stock vs BMR rear suspension?
Yes, but its hard to provide that full review without it being a seat in your pants feeling.

My hood vents pretty well compared to the stock hood setup.
Try wrapping the headers and the starter. Had good results from overeating sraters in the past, especially on 6th gen corvettes.
If I run into issues again that will be next steps.
LethalGarage keep us posted on the situation.
But keep in mind that if you have ceramic coated headers it might damage the coating, you might be able to just wrap the section closer to the starter.

Because the LT1 is not built to have a supercharger on it. The slow start is a GM issue. Nope not the long tubes. Mine slow started before my LTs

We had drop ins.
What about the noise issue you said was recurring? That's not starter related unless your starter is not disengaging from the flywheel.
+Lorenzo Garza no more noise
Have you thought about using some heat wrap on the headers? or some other kind of shielding between that and the new starter?
Why are you forging the bottom end? I thought the LT1 was good for around 800-900hp at the crank on the stock bottom end.
Nope. People pop their motors at 650 range. Or at least they have been. Primarily due to the piston rings.
Yes, whp.

When you order long tube headers don't you have an option to use some type of heat reducing coating instead of just bare steel? I forgot what it was called
Some people will coat and wrap their headers. You typically have to go to a 3rd party to do it.
What’s the original color of that air intake filter?
Hey bud I have a 12 ss with same set up. Having some issues. Like to pick your brain on the issues. Can you shoot me a chat? I’d like ask you what size belt also I had that same sound. It went away when I took that motor cover off and changed the hood. I’m at 755 rwhp
Can message me on IG
Is the clanking noise coming from the Pro Charger Puly"s and does it sound quiater with the hood down? Michael
I got Al's sig at Fest too!
Did you ever finish that video you were doing on those side vent installs?
+Sandkei editing it
Cool
whats up man i enjoy your videos keep up the good work. i was wandering if a could buy a lethal camaro shirt, if they're for sale, do you have a 4x. i have a 2017 zl1 red. would love to rock the shirt when i take my car out.
I have 4x in 5th and 6th gen inspired designs and they can be found at www.lethalgarage.com
LethalGarage
Thanks for responding, I will take a look and buy 1 or two
Ok, I bought a black one. Thanks again from Florida
Hmm do you Andy from Diablo Formula Racing shipping out your ZL1 seats? 🤔 lol
He did ship them out.l They made an appearance in his recent video.
Hey there! Awesome vids. I’m debating now whether to get a Procharger or a magnuson heartbeat Supercharger. Any take on this?
Maggie ftw
should've marked the case some way. they don't need bad PR.
What kinda of oil you using matt just curious? Brand, weight, synthetic ect?
AMSOIL Z-Rod 10w-30. Some of the best available for protection on built motors.
@lethalgarage Do you think I should forge my motor, just to make it more reliable with just headers, tune and intake? maybe a blower I wanna push around 600 hp but safely without having high maintenance or scared of something breaking
Not with bolt-ons and if you stay at 600 rwhp.
Just out of curiosity who signed the engine cover?
Craftsmansteve It was some guy from Camaro Fest.
I just bought a 2017 1ss with 16,000 miles on it. It has a rough idle. I took it to the dealer and they checked it said there were no codes and that these engines always have a rough idle. Is this true? Do these engines idle rough right from the factory ?
Do you have a under sized harmonic balancer pully? That could do it
Do any amp draw or a bench tests on the old starter?
Tune specs maybe🤔
Tune remains the same with no issues beyond the starter replacement.
LethalGarage builds always make me nervous with unforeseen issues especially since my home town has absolutely no credibility when it comes to speed shops so if a build is to be done it would have to be out of town😢😬
I live right behind a Motiva
Hey quick question are you still on stock stall converter?
I am.
Is that an optional black procharge or the standard colour they come in?
You could also wrap the starter:

Are you going to put a 1 piece carbon fiber driveshaft in you camaro ss?
+batbat1156 Not planning on it
Pt.2
Your problem is not the starter. There is only one way our shop managed to beat the heat
In a sense the moisture from the heat causes your
What kind of power are you making? If I had to guess I would say 550rwhp
I was at 747rwhp
You were at 747whp on stock bottom end here ?
No, it was forged
I'm dying to know, what are bolt-one?
Sagi Skins basically anything that is not inside the engine it's self that attaches to the car with bolts. Exhaust, intake, his pro charger, suspension. Etc
Ahh makes since now, thank you.
Is your procharger the helical ut gear set or just the regular??
Its the helical gears
So it's not really fixed it just went away for now. This is why you don't rape your car with upgrades 100% you will have problems and 100% u won't use all that power ever. Save your money kids.
Lol. no, its gone. 110-118 degree days and pushing the car harder and getting it hotter than it has ever been in the last 6 weeks.
Given the 100+ temps, it's not too surprising.
Why do our 6th Gen Camaros take forever to start?
GM hates us. Its honestly the LT1 design.
Heat shield is very much in place.
The more I see of these superchargers the more I’m going for centrifugal over twin screw
How much is the pro charger running for...
Are you air to air, or air to water
