- I think it was the first visit of the Russian soldiers and officers in the army of the US Brigade. We think this visit is the offical end of the Cold War between our countries. We are very gratefull to the american soldiers and officers for this wonderfull day spend in your barracks. Thank you very much!
I was a member of the US 3rd Bn 6th Inf at McNair, shown in this video, although at the time of this video the unit was reflagged. I recall those times very well. The warmth between the two countries was sincere and it would have been wonderful if we could have continued on a path of working together in all aspects toward a new economic, social and welfare for the planet. It didn't take long for the strain and mistrust between the two countries to resurface. It is too bad the politicians can't learn to live and serve for the betterment of their people.
@Dave yes, we all had a reunion about two years ago in Berlin, we're planning another in 2022
I didn't serve there but wish I did. You guys are right about the politicians on both sides.

@@vasilenegulici6146 yes it is too bad. It is also too bad when Trump was president, he was in the position to stop what is now going on in the Ukraine if he would have stepped in and did anything when Russian annexed Crimea. That would have made them think twice before thinking they could just march in and take over the Ukraine. But Trump was a very poor president. He had no understanding of world politics and stil doesn't.

Hi! I served in the Russian Berlin Brigade 1987 - 1992. Very similar memories. In 1987, Ronald Reagan came to Berlin. Just a few days before the arrival of the President of the United States in Berlin, at the airport Tegel (not sure because I watched the plane from Karlshorst) landed airplane of the American military transport "Galaxy". This huge plane like a bird hovering over Berlin and slowly slowly landed. Everything was like in a certain surreal film. All Berlin could see this Huge machine
Bco. 4/502 Mortars. 87-89 Hard Cold Training, but had an awesome time downtown.
Andrej were you one of the Russian soldiers who visited our base. I was one of the soldiers.
Actually with the picture of the video above I am on the left side
I've nothing but respect for my Russian counterparts. They served their country with every bit as much honor and integrity as we on the Western side of the Berlin Wall did. I thank my God that I never was put in a position where we'd oppose each other through force of arms. God granted us the wisdom for each side to see the folly in that.
@@austin3876 my experience with former Soviet soldiers who later came here to the US has been much the same. I'm glad we never had to fight that war.
I was serving in the United States Army in the late '80s and early '90s from September 1988 to February 1991 as part of the 6th BN 502nd INF DIV Berlin BDE. McNair Barracks used to be the place where I lived. I served before the Fall of the Berlin Wall, during its fall on Thursday, November 9, 1989, and after the fall. The Reunification of Germany happened on Wednesday, October 3, 1990 and I could witness that happening as well. Great memories of serving in the military service.
I lived in Berlin from 85-89. My father was in the American army with company F, 40th Armor. I took a college course at McNair barracks because I failed a class at Berlin American High School. Most of the soldiers were cool, but some did not appreciate a civilian kid with a green mohawk in their class. GREAT VIDEO!! Thank you. This brings back many good memories.
😂
I had the privilege to be stationed here back in 1991 to 1993. Aco 5/502. The same place they were inspecting the weapons. That was our dayroom. Played pool on that table. Sat at that same CQ desk plenty of times. I recognized so many guys I was with there in the video. Some from 3rd platoon and some from mortars. I was the armorer in that arms room back in 1993. Awesome video. Great memories. Was and still am proud to be a part of the Berlin Brigade.
Our generals have always come to you. But now that you have visited the simple Russian soldiers and officers .... This was the first time. I was one of the organizers of the open day in the Russian Berlin Brigade. 99% of the 100 that we saw each other.
Buddy lay off the paint thinner
I was in this video, one of the American NCO's
Thank you for posting this video. Brings back memories.
I was stationed there from 08/88-08/90. 4/502d Infantry
I loved Berlin!
I was hhc 4/502,2 year deployment ending 6 months after the wall fell, hell of a ride!
4th Bn was deactivated Soon After.
Jederzeit wieder Willkommen in Berlin mein Freud. Grüsse aus Berlin Lichterfelde. DAMALS NÄHE Geiterstadt übungsplatz Reinhold
Hello! I served there from 1988 - 1990 as a Soviet border guard at the Bravo checkpoints and the Spy Bridge. Maybe we've met. I live now in Ukraine.
I was in Charlie Mortars
“9 in the clip” well and truly an officer
I was stationed there during the time period of December 1986 - July 1992. We had the Russians at our barracks (Andrews Barracks) as well. It was Christmas 1990 (if I remember properly).
I'm amazed to have been in those same rooms in 1982-83. Seems like yesterday.
Hey brother Andrej Stroganov I'll never forget that day we met by a simple salute soldier to soldiers now old soldiers 😂 Salute brother. A 6/502 INF Berlin Brigade.
Hello brother Ernest. I have exactly the same feelings. It was an honor for me to serve in Berlin. It was an honor to meet guys like you and your friends. We were, are and always will be Berliners. Salutere brother! Russian Berlin Brigade.
I served in CSC, 4th Bn. 6th Inf. in Berlin from ‘75-‘78. Interesting unit and interesting city. Generally I liked my tour in Berlin, but I was ready to rotate home in ‘78. The Army in its wisdom decided to put me on orders to return to Germany 6 months after I was assigned to Ft. Knox. 6months at Ft. Knox and they wanted me to go back to Germany in 6 more months for another 3 year tour. I decided I didn’t want to re-enlist just to return to Germany, so I left the service. Damn shame because if I had had 3 year tour at Ft. Knox, I might very well have been happy to go back to Germany.
I was in Berlin Brigade from 80 to 86 , my experiences are and were far different. We didn't have this sharing, it was far more observation only.
This was clearly after the wall came down.
(CSC 4/6 Stingers, 82-84)
Ya I was just going to say, why are the Russians there? Never seen any at Ramstein AB or S.H.A.P.E :)
My son Eugene Lyde was stationed their during that time. He has fond memories ❤
Hello. I was stationed at McNair from 68-69. One Sunday morning I was awoken by a loud roar. I was on the top floor. I ran to the window to see a Mig fighter flying between my roof and the adjacent barrack roof. The pilot and I exchanged stares. Above was a flight of Migs which proceeded to peel off individually and buzz the barrack. Interesting times.
Amy Hoover....i recall that day...he actually broke the sound barrier and some windows not too far from the Glieneke Brucke...USMLM reps were showing our equipment to the Ruskies and 5 years previous Major Nicholsons body was brought back to West Berlin from Ludwigslust having been fatally wounded by a Soviet sentry. I don't believe I would have been smiling at this get together.
I was in CSC & HHC 2/6 from 77-80. Great memories. I was 17 when I got there...and grew up in a hurry.
am very grateful to you for a good review about my film. My wife is also Russian. We both know very well, as both of us is not easy.
spent Summer 1989 at Gießen U.S. Army Base -- we drove through the Inter-German Fence to West Berlin
Took a bus tour into East Berlin
Danke an alle an alle Soldaten ob West oder ost die einen kühlen Kopf bewahren haben 1989 das Wunder im November Respekt solche klugen Menschen mussten in unsere Regierung sein
Stimmt !!
I wonder who the young Ranger qualified E-5 is? I was a Corporal in 1990 at Fort Carson. I also love the young brother with the "box" hair cut. It was definitely the nineties.
I was wondering about the ranger tab soldier also, 3 service stripes means he was in the Army at least 9years. Was he busted down or what?
Hi, Carl! This girl was a Russian. She worked as a translator in the Russian headquarters of the Berlin Brigade. I arrived serves Russian brigade in 1987, and heard a lot about this girl. He was educated at the military school of translators in Moscow. Maybe I can send you a picture of her.
Danke für dieses tolle Zeitdokument!
I was there in 83 -86 and was inspected by a Russian COL and a Russian PVT with a Hot looking interpreter and a Barracks full of Brass I think it was 84 but could have been early 85. CSC 5/502 TOW PLT.
I was there 83-86.
Awesome film! I actually left on Thanksgiving 1987! Pretty much Berlin was over when Ronald Reagan gave his famous “Tear down this Wall” speech! I was in the 9th row and have the invitation in my scrapbook which should be framed👌
Thanks for sharing this video with us, Andrej. It's amazing...
Amazing video. Really shows how soldiers are similar, regardless of nation.
i was berlin from 86-90. my wife is russian. thanx for your video. i havent seen those images for a while. it was before the web and smartphones.
Hey Andrej!
I was one of the last soldiers to be stationed there in June 1993! (A Co, Combat Support Battalion)
Was that the 5th Batt dining facility near the end of the video? If so, that was called the Specialty House and ceased serving meals that June. (There was only one defac after that) in bldg 1001G. The old 6th Bat defac. I stayed in the former 4th batt barracks (the defac was in the basement) and had closed after the 4 inactivated. It was empty during my time there.
It would be nice to tour the barracks now, which have been turned into apartments.
The 5 & 6 bn motorpool was demolished in late 90's or early 00's and is a shopping center.
The motor pool at the back gate was demolished in the late 1990s and has an apartment complex there.
Great trip, down memory lane, thanks for posting.
Was stationed at Gieseen West Germany Rivers Barracks 2/92 8 Inch Self Propelled Howitzer. I asked about West Berlin. Firs Sargent said that you are restricted from traveling to West Berlin because of your additional duties. I couldn't even fly commercial over Communication Countries.
Thank you for this wonderful video
I was a medic in 4/6 Inf from June, 1980-Januray, 1982 and we had the Gamma Goats back then for ambulances.
I was there in b co , 4/6th from 80 -86
Great video... I left In Jan of 90 but do recognize that this was the 5/502 INF compound. I saw my company C co when you are leaving the mess-hall. This brings back some great memories and I sure my fellow 5/502 will get a kick out of it... Thank you...
4th Bn was deactivated Soon After.
The female SGT (most likely an Intel type and DLI grad) getting her Russian a good workout.
She was an MP assigned to Berlin Access- Part of the Brigade Provost Marshals Office.
Vielen dank für diesen einzigartigen Film!
Things changed since my time years ago. Assigned to 2nd Bn/6th Infantry (Combat Support Co), 4.2" heavy mortar platoon. No APC's, only light infantry. Used the infamous "Gamma Goat" truck to haul that heavy mortar. I do mean heavy! The Soviets (Russians) did cruise around all American, British, & French military facilities. They did this when the Russians went to "guard" the last NAZI still imprisoned in Spandau Prison. He was still considered a danger to humanity. Even though he was 92! Travel time from Check Point Charlie to Spandau Prison was 30 minutes. The Russians took 3 to 4 hours. Taking tons of pictures. Please know that anything shown to the Russians in this video can be learned from Jane's Defence Weekly. No state secrets passed.
Yep, 38 months for me. That was just a bunch of "eye wash"... 77-80
Was at McNair Barracks 1977 to 1979. Maybe I saw you there. Was at the barracks across from the PX.
That would be Herr former deputy fuhrer Hess?
I was Alpha 2 6. 1983 - 1984. "Unity is Strength". 3rd Platoon "Second to None, Sir!". LOL! Just before I left, they changed from Unity is Strength to "Strike". Willie P. Openshaw
I thought the 4.2 was carried in the M113. We carried the 81 mm in them. Gamma Goat carried FDC.
Hi Andrej-
Thanks for posting the video- My old squad leader (Hey Dale!) sent it to me because my old friend Bob (where are you Pena?) and I were at the table next to you in the red shirts eating at the mess hall. What a cool find and great video. It was a great change to see!! 5/502 Mortar platoon!
if the Mess Sgt looked familiar to you, then maybe you know the Commo/S3 RTO...SGT (or SPC) Kennedy?
Hi i served from 1980 to 1982 Co B 2nd Battalion 6th Inf.
gosh i wish i had made it, i was supposed to get stationed here , but the bombing of the discoteque changed it all and i was sent to Babenhausen. i was suppose to be a part of this Berlin Brigade
@fallout1111 I am glad that you liked my video. Thank you! Here are answers to your questions.
1. Absolutely the same. I did not even feel the difference.
2. Yes, especially if the M16 has a grenade launcher. The Kalashnikov rifle is much easier and more convenient.
3. That said, I am, because I could not do this because in my hands was a video camera.
Great filmdocument 👍🏼
Amazing footage!!! I was there in 77 & 78...
Awesome!
OMG...I was in 5/502 in Berlin at McNair Barracks. I can honestly state none of the Infantry Battalions would even remotely consider allowing vehicles in their Motor Pool to look like a hot bag of gelatinous F like I saw in this video. I won't even go into the dress green uniforms that looked like someone hung green on chewed bags of bubblegum or hair actually touching and overlapping collars.
😂
25:26 that's me
That's so cool
The operator said you are a hero
Great vid man
Nice
Was at Berlin Brigade Hqtrs 3/6 Recon Platoon [Border Patrol] 1964 -1966 // This could not have happened back then // Who Knew ?
About 1967 or 68 the Russians had a innovative AK 47. The stock was plastic and in some circles was called the AKM (m for Mattel)
Wow just seeing this video and recognized a friend in the back. I need to remember his name and see if I can find him on Facebook.
I love it when they had Randy Travis's Meet Me Under The Mistletoe played by 23:27. 😂
DANKE FÜR`S ZEIGEN VON ZEITZEUGEN - HOCH LEBE GREENPEACE - Besonders mit eurem Wissen in Berlin zu alten und neuen "Kräften des Friedens" LG CHRIS
I was with the 42nd Eng on Andrews from 82-85. We had a Russian Colonel visit Andrews in 84. I let him and his VERY attractive Lt. interpreter into my arms room. I've always wondered if she had dual citizenship, she spoke flawless American english without a hint of an accent. I remember how the MIGs would like to break the sound barrier over West Berlin. In the 3 yrs 8 mths I was there I heard hundreds.
I was with the Artillery battery on McNair from 88-91. As I recall we had Russian visitors to our Barracks in '89, I think it was a Russian general. It was a nice visit, he liked our barracks. Although, when our Sergeats briefed him on our equipment, he thought they were really officers wearing sergeant rank. After the wall came down, some friend and I visited a Russian Army open house in East Germany. The poor soldiers had pretty rough living conditions.
Haha , we bought exactly the same Poineer Receiver with Infinity Loudspeakers in the P/X by that time.
LOL that one Ruskie officer couldn't keep his hands off of that squad leader M-16/grenade launcher combo. I guess the Cold War was over by then or there's no way they would have allowed this.
actually...the Berlin Brigade had hosted our Russian conterparts across the "wall" for serveral years this way. It's a simple courtesy extended to a potential adversary that we respected.
M-203 grenade launcher. Squad Leaders carried an M-16, a designated grenadier would have carried the M-203. There would have been two grenadiers per Infantry squad.
@@r.c.wysong7985 You are correct 👍
one significant thing I logged for in assignments post_
-Berlin...concrete... unwavering standards. If you stayed for longer than a short tour in Berlin it was because you met or exceeded Berlin Brigade standards. That was the only duty assignment in my career that held the line save a brief peripheral tour in an SF assignment. Thank you...the NCOs and Officers of 5/502 for challenging me to continually step up. In a real and whole part of my life you made me a better man, soldier, and citizen.
@@austin3876 The Berlin tour was shorter than the standard 24 mo.single and 36 mo.accompanied?
i knew the LTC but I never new he spoke Rusky
He told us that he had previously served in military intelligence, where he had to learn Russian. It is very interesting to know where this person is now and how was his fate?
@tuellerdrill Greetings to you, my American colleague. Also miss Germany and in our meetings with you in Berlin. Americans are very similar to Russian. At work I was involved in Afghanistan for three years. Have you seen my other films about the American Berlin Brigade?
I served in A co.3rd BG 6th inf. from Feb.13,1961 until Aug.23,1963.. I remember we had open house for the Berliners but did not allow the Russians through the gates at McNair.JFK and LBJ came to visit is.
And to think Major Nicholson died for his pictures and APCs are wide open for GSFG to view.
A true tragedy, waste of a life for nothing
@fallout1111 3. It was not about a double portion. I just asked my friend to put something in my bowl, because I really wanted to remove the video your beautiful dining room for the soldiers.
The way Army operates, it haven't changed still the same. Only uniform and weapons are different
@fallout1111 4. Yes, it was a commander of an infantry battalion, Major Chernetsky. The fact that the Russian similar devices are very large and heavy. So we were curious to see the American night-vision devices.
25th Infantry Division Medic here. Great to see that the common soldeir is the same regardless of whatever nation you belong to, even bitter rivals.
We're you suprised at how it was on the American side? Was it similar to life on a Russian post? Great that you got to visit during the Christmas season.
This day is simply impossible to forget! You, too, were there on that day?
I was BB from 1984 to 1987, and then a civilian job until 1990.
I was there those same years. 4/502. Which unit were you in?
This is the only Marine in Berlin, Major Jim Rikkart. Not sure really what is right wrote his name.
Todd Milton (the Armor LTC) and Nick Nicholson were colleagues in USMLM when the fatal shooting happened. So I wondered what Todd was thinking when he was sitting with these guys and especially when he was explaining the coin tradition of having to buy a drink if caught without it. RIP Nick - a great guy and confirmed russophile.
08:37 This guy was crazy to take away the M16 with him
A co. 3rd BG 6th Inf. Feb.1961 until Aug.1963. I must say our troops were sharper.
We did not associate with the Russians in 1961 to 1963.

Did you guys have wear your dress green when traveling outside of Berlin. For example if a soldier had to take an emergency leave. Would he have to travel through East Germany at night, by train, in dress greens. The reason I asked is because that’s how we did when I traveled to Berlin in 1990.
Yes, and yes.
I never had official travel transiting into or out of Berlin on the Duty Train. I went on leave a few times. Straight civies.
What a silly time to be in the Army. Elvis BDUs, itchy cold weather gear, no real deployments.
No, this is the time when Gorby and Yeltsin made "detant" and "perestroika" a big thing before the collapsed of the U.S.S.R.
The Russians don't have very high firearms safety sense. In the beginning they are pointing muzzles at each other, one had to push the muzzle away before it went up his nose.
Just a question, in 1990 it still was the Soviet Union, so was it not the Soviet Berlin Brigade?

I was in HHC 4/502. When were you there? There was a time the Bn Commander, LTC Brown, called the whole battalion into the theater to talk about the motorcycle jackassery going on at the time. I was the leader of it. I had a VF1100 Magna with a rising sun painted on the tank.

I am a bit shocked to see the Soviets being allowed to check out the allied military hardware at Berlin. That was a bit upsetting, at least for me.
Now Obama, on the other hand, he has allowed all sorts of enemies to visit the most sensitive military sites and that really burns me up even worse.
Ok the more I watched this video, the more angrier I am getting to see Soviet soldiers gaining knowledge of our military hardware, all the while Bush Sr. allowed this to happen. I am sorry, but Bush Sr. should have been arrested and charged with treason for collaborating with the enemy alongside with U.S. military personnel. They all should have been swinging from a rope.
TheYizuman ISIS and Saudis uses U.S miltary weapon systems, its no surprise
Do you really believe the Russians had no knowledge of our infantry weapons prior to this? Seriously? This was nothing more than our allowing them to see, feel, touch and experience our better made, more lethal weapons. Not as a "yeah we got you" moment but in reality for them it was " holy F these guys are not F-ing around" that they could take back home with them.
Thank you for posting this video. It is greatly appreciated.
