I had neighbours like her until recently and as soon as they moved out and before the new tenants moved in I lopped some pretty major branches from the 2 storey trees growing over the fence onto the neighbours side. Very satisfying! And I now have sunlight in my backyard ☀️
The house next to me is for sale. I’d like to take out a while hedgerow that drops seed in my flower bed. They sprout like crazy. The bushes are 15 - 20 feet tall.
Having been in the business for many years, we found putting down plastic tarps to collect the debris as we cut made for much easier and faster cleanup. Especially helpfull in wet contitions as well. Saves on hand picking large debris and raking so much of the small.
This is an example of why I would never plant a hedge where I don't own both sides. You did a great job. Hopefully, the neighbor will be less stubborn in the future.
Yes, and in the case of our neighbours expected to be able to saunter into our garden - usually waiting until we went out - to faff around with their plantings.
Hmm. New neighbour has mentioned something about a "green hedge to me. Suddenly I foresee issues. Probably not from her side, because they're a few decades younger than I and love gardening. I have to pay someone to wield the edge trimmer etc...More work for me. I'm going to have to change that program. Also I think it's short sighted of them as well. Why make more work for yourself? not going to stay middle aged and fit forever, right? As we see so often on this kind of video. You never know what the future holds...
What an out of control mess on the neighbour’s side. Doesnt even look like the same hedge! And you are left to clear and clean up the mess! Great work!
WOW! I can’t believe that those neighbors preferred looking at a hedge mess like that side, rather than have it trimmed up regularly! Some people! You get what you ask for!
And look at the ugly prizes they win🤪🤪 I guess they are too lazy to walk around and see how beautiful IT COULD HAVE BEEN! But hey, they want control, right?
It would benefit her, to have the hedge looking nice on her side. Even sacrificing a couple of flowers. Silly woman. NOW she's figured that out. Great job!
I used to have the same issue at one of my clients, except I used to put my extension pole on and cut their side, I stopped doing it, in the hope they would do it themselves. They never did, even though they had their own gardener! I know you should just do what your client wants, but you don't want to leave a job looking shit!

Notice the difference between regular trimming and never trimming conifer, it goes all gappy and doesnt fill up to a nice green wall like a regular trimmed hedge.
Hello Mark! Another great video! It is a shame that the neighbor waited so long to let you trim on their side. It would have been beautiful by now. But, oh well, with your expertise it will get there. Take care and have a wonderful weekend. We are celebrating Easter this weekend and today is Good Friday. No school, mail, or banking today. God bless you and your family. Sincerely, Diane from Missouri 😊😊
Had a neighbor who had tall aborvitea trees on her side of the property line that grew over a foot into our yard through a cyclone fence and 12 ft high. I trimmed them back to the fence and two ft above it just to be able to mow without cducking. She got upset and threatened to sue me if the trees died. They didn't. The next year the foliage closed up the exposed in er branches. Years later, however, many of the trees along her entire property line died, which were not along my property line. She had to get a landscaper to remove and replace them, and even some of the new ones died. I'm glad she couldn't try to blame me for her losses.
My Dad always used a plumb line to trim our hedge. It was so straight and even. Straight and even on the sides and across the top. A stake at both ends string and everything taken out in-between. It was always perfect. It doesn't come out all lumpy and bumpy. Very straight edges.
Hi Mark, from Ottawa Canada 🇨🇦 Just found your vlog and subscribed. Great job on the hedge, amazing. Looked like a lot of hard work, especially in the rain. Here in Ottawa we are expecting 25cm of snow. ⛷️🎿⛄At least your client can enjoy it from her side, instead of a overgrown tangled mess. I was really impressed with the clean up after. Loved the wood chipper.
We have neighbours like that, one side. Undermined our fence posts, having refused to pay his half of a shared fence because he says it isn’t (told his other neighbours that too), then refused to let our fence guys go their side to mend the posts!!! Also claimed some of the posts are 3” on his land, ignoring the fact that they appropriated 6” further down. I’m glad they let you cut it all in the end.

They are best pruned at the end of the year or in the winter. You can dead head them and tidy them if they are getting out of control! Thanks for watching 😊👍
Thanks for the info. I have been trimming it, but, I really think I need to cut it back…it’s getting out of control. When it storms it looks like it’s going to split apart. I learn a lot by watching you, thanks.
Работа выполнена прекрасно. Но все равно волнуюсь, когда в ветренную погоду вы работаете на лестнице, и обе руки заняты. Берегите себя и будьте здоровы! 🇺🇦
This neighbour was the author of her own misfortune. My mother had a hedge (on her property) but to trim the other side required being in the neighbour's yard. I'd always ask the neighbour's permission and his answer was always "Hell yeah!!" When someone else is willing to pay the freight, why wouldn't you? Wonder job you've done on it!
In my view hedging should be planted further into your own garden/away from any fence thus allowing the back to be trimmed so they don’t start pushing on to the fence behind, no matter whose fence it is. Most people, especially the elderly, want privacy but may not be happy having to let some stranger onto their property each year. Our neighbour’s conifers and brambles used to poke through the gaps in our fence and we had a battle keeping it tidy and off our path which ran alongside it. It looked a mess and brambles caught our legs. We didn’t complain but it was a continual nuisance . Anyway, now in a new home and replanting the hedge here that is far too thick and pushes back on our own fence - so, with our experience, we are planting all hedge a few feet into our own garden and when needed walk between hedge and fence to trim. Should be easier to paint preservative onto fence in future to help maintain that too - hopefully keeping us and our neighbours happy!
Yes you are right, in an ideal scenario there should be a gap for maintenance of the hedges! Unfortunately I only know of one hedge I cut where this is the case🤷♂️😩
People are nervous about things because they have been undermined in the past in some way. I know people can be stubborn or cantankerous (myself included) But, once I am shown politely that I was being helped, not hindered, I was on board. Not every mule that balks is a biter. Just have a little softness when it comes to neighbors. I learned this the hard way from being on both sides of the fence.
@hitzmanji1978 Better a Karen than a bully. My neighbors love me and I them. I would do anything for them. You have a lot to learn about people and the world. I hope its not the hard way but I have my doubts. Good Luck.
Hi. I’ve been watching your videos for a while. Thank you for sharing some amazing transformations. I have a question? What do you do with the waste, because I would love to pick it up. 😁
You did a beautiful job on those hedges and had the perfect equipment to do it. I have a Stihl chainsaw but it's way too heavy to hold with one hand. My neighbor's tree branches are pushing on our fence and causing too much shade and the lawn won't grow there. I need to take some limbs off. We don't need their permission if it's growing over our property line.
A problem I've had for scores of years, my conifers are just over 40 yrs old and I've always kept them well trimmed front and top for decades but have never been cut on my neighbours side and they are now over 8 feet deep with just two feet on my side of the boundary. Thankfully new people moved in not many years ago and they do occasionally give them a very light trim. From what I can see you've got your work cut out cleaning up that mess.
Conifers always a nightmare to trim back, customers don't understand how they grow and the importance of regular maintenance if they want to avoid the desolate look. Good job done.
Very nice work. A shame that by not allowing regular trimming you had to do a true chore instead of a quick tidy up. You were able to do much more with your hand shears than I thought was going to be possible when I saw the back side of that hedge.
In Australia whatever grows across a boundary into your property can be cut back - none of this controlling rubbish that this poor neighbour is subjected to - heavens above what a control freak!
but you must offer the cuttings back to the owner of the plants. They don’t have to take them, but you are still obliged to offer. Also, you cannot cut down far as to damage the plants.
I had this problem with a neighbour years ago, the law says you may cut anything overhanging your boundary, but you must place all cuttings back on the neighbours side of the fence etc, if you do not do this you may be liable for criminal damage, l gave my neighbour the option to rent the land his trees were taking up! He declined,so out came the hedge trimmer! And an afternoon of hard graft for him clearing up HIS cuttings, the problem never arose again, his marriage failed,he moved on,and a neatly trimmed conifer hedge was born!! Stand YOUR ground !
Rent the land?. What a stupid thing to say in the situation. It grew on your side needed to be cut from your side so just do it and cut out the grandstanding. Any normal person bothered by it would just cut it and either get rid themselves or put back on the neighbours side but you clearly made the entire thing a bigger deal than it needed to be. Also you say "tree" then end with "bush". If you're going to twist the story so you don't come across as the twat you acted like then get your story straight. Or just tell the truth in the first place.
I have a conifer hedge at the bottom of my garden and a huge tall conifer standing towards my house, I HATE CONIFERS almost as much as my hate for private hedge's mine is a long one. When you get over into your 70's the pension doesn't cover getting it all cut and removed.
I always find that neighbours whose gardens are tips and have no interest are the most difficult. They also try and nab that extra couple of cm's of land as well. Bonkers.
My neighbour at old house tried this. My side boundary. I always gave notice wanting to get to cut hedge on there side. Amount times got no or bill from hedge cutting company. Did i pay, nope.
I was wondering can u use the branches u cut off the trees hanging in that person's yard as a mulch or something of that source? Well dearie u b careful nd safe urself. GOD BLESS U.
Out of curiosity, how much time had lapsed between this most recent trimming on the neighbours side and the previous time you were allowed do it? I'm very interested as to how long it will take a hedge to go from looking like your clients side to the neighbours side.
The big question is will the neighbour get you back regularly to trim the hedge(s) and give it a chance to look good (like the other side). I expect this was a one off job, repeated every two years. The skill was knowing how to treat the different hedge types. Well done, vastly improved 👍
People never seem to plant things and take into consideration placing them according to full growth dimensions!!! I always trim up my magnolias away from my neighbors property …would avoid a lot of hassle if they plant well within their boundary lines!!
It is her right! But then years later decide that she does want it cut , but does she want to pay for it🤔 of course not, which I found unfair on my customer 🤷♂️
There will always be neighbors who don’t care what their yards look like, who don’t trim bushes and trees, and don’t rake leaves or pick up branches and fallen sticks. When you ask them if you can do it for them, they take offense, say no, and then don’t do it. What they don’t realize is, taking care of your property is not only showing pride in what you own, but good for your mind, body, soul, and healthy. Get outside, get moving, and get some fresh air.
Hedges are a huge bone of contention, made worse by people who plant them too near to a boundary so they can"t properly maintain them themselves without causing neighbours the expense and hassle of having to keep something they didn't plant under control. If they are a boundary hedge then it is a different matter but there should be some agreement on the height. In this case if there was no expense involved then it was perhaps a little foolish of the neighbour not to have them trimmed. The situation can become more difficult should the owners of the hedge move. People should be more circumspect in their planting near boundaries to avoid causing any undue stress to neighbours. Any dispute between the two has to be recorded in documentation during the sale process. Lovely job on the trimming.

I do use them for trimming hedges sometimes but needed it for shredding it up on this job. I wasn’t so worried as most of the stuff was big😊👍
That is what our gardener does when he does our hedge. 200ft so it saves a ton of time cleaning up

Yes I thought that. Bloody cheek - I’d have charged her. Tidy job.

I would have left it, too. I like natural hedges.
Yes some people do but conifer gone natural will take over everything 😬
@@mdgardenservices7819 Yes, personal tastes I guess. :) Did a great job for sure.
Should charge her double! Those shreddings would be great on blueberry bushes!
I know!😄
I used to have neighbors like that. By request, I would never cut that messed up side.
😩👍
I have a conifer hedge at the bottom of my garden and a huge tall conifer standing towards my house, I HATE CONIFERS almost as much as my hate for private hedge's mine is a long one. When you get over into your 70's the pension doesn't cover getting it all cut and removed.
I know they can become a real pain for lots of people!😬
I always find that neighbours whose gardens are tips and have no interest are the most difficult. They also try and nab that extra couple of cm's of land as well. Bonkers.
Definitely 😄
Never leave conifers so they are cut into the brown as once cut into.old wood they won't grow back
Always trim them at least twice a year
🙂👍
Should such a severe cut be done in nesting season in the UK? Surely not, right?
Nothing was nesting. I always check before doing hedges😊
Some people are so strange, What an improvement. Get yourself a set of Tripod ladders, there a game changer. Garry Solihull
Thank you
I do have a tripod ladder, it’s a tall one so didn’t use it for this job😊👍
My neighbour at old house tried this. My side boundary. I always gave notice wanting to get to cut hedge on there side. Amount times got no or bill from hedge cutting company. Did i pay, nope.
😄👍
Damn I wish I had help like that!
😄😅👍
I was wondering can u use the branches u cut off the trees hanging in that person's yard as a mulch or something of that source? Well dearie u b careful nd safe urself. GOD BLESS U.
Thank you
The mulch was used in another garden 😊👍
I’m surprised at how silent that woodchipper is. Wow.
😄👍
Wow! Do you ever sound bored and fed up.
I was probably looking fed up😆
Feels like I’ve been working in the rain for about 6 months or more 😩😅
I wouldn't have done it if she didn't let you the first time
Well it was more for my customer as it was sad for her to see it looking so messy! 🙂👍
So agree with you ,nasty neighbours .😊
What model sthil is that please
It’s the msa 161t🙂👍
Out of curiosity, how much time had lapsed between this most recent trimming on the neighbours side and the previous time you were allowed do it?
I'm very interested as to how long it will take a hedge to go from looking like your clients side to the neighbours side.
I can’t remember exactly but a good few years! 😩
The big question is will the neighbour get you back regularly to trim the hedge(s) and give it a chance to look good (like the other side). I expect this was a one off job, repeated every two years.
The skill was knowing how to treat the different hedge types. Well done, vastly improved 👍
Thanks
I’m sure I can give it a trim when I do the other side!😊👍
AND I HOPE SHE PAID YOU!
My customer did!👍
I didn't expect to see a palm tree in Britain
😄👍
People never seem to plant things and take into consideration placing them according to full growth dimensions!!! I always trim up my magnolias away from my neighbors property …would avoid a lot of hassle if they plant well within their boundary lines!!
I know this is one of the problems!
People don’t plant for the future, they plant for an instant garden! It doesn’t always work 😬😔
Homeowners Neighbour Wouldn’t let us Cut her side. That's her right !
Very true
Unfortunately you come across them all the time! 😬👍
Thanks
Hedges do cause all sorts of problems between neighbours!😅
I know - I have woeful tales to tell about inconsiderate neighbours!
Is that a survey marker? Is there a survey on file at a government office?
The post is the boundary 👍
shame the neighbour didnt have it done sooner and regular, a shaggy hedge never looks 100%
I know!
Didn’t have to get like that😔
Conifers are always hard to trim. They are actually
They can be when not regularly trimmed!😅👍
