I had the first version of this in 1970. They were slapped together with point-to-point wiring by hand and sucked down 9 volt batteries like marshmallows. This looks like a major improvement.
Tom, you are a monster working for a monster company & of course that crazy dude in the office! Ever since I bought my first Big Muff in the 70's, I've been a huge fan
this really opens the doors, im really hoping for something like this for the memory man or bad stone or battalion or pog or maybe even the superego. i think youd really drop the ball if you only did this format for the muff.
I’d imagine it will depend on the success/demand for this. I agree with you completely though. I’d love to see any and all pedals with a format like this!!
I am excited about having this as a stand alone Muff Pedal. Tone BP+wicker+Stereo+presets. I don’t use a DAW to record anymore and this would still be a great addition.
I thought EHX was trolling. Like it was a plug-in for your DAW. But in pedal form. Like it was just the same (awesome) pedal they always make. But this is something different. Interesting. .
Holy shit I was just dreaming about something like this and here you are! Forget boutique makes of the Muff circuit, you guys nailed it with the Deluxe and now again with this. Instant buy!
Super rad concept! My only criticism is that I wish it had MIDI output. [MIDI output to control a hardware synth, then send hardware synth audio output back into the Big Muff.]
Way stoked on this! I want it on my board! Presets! I have an old advertisement booklet that has this in it and I have looked for it! No wonder I couldn't find it, it wasn't out yet!
Very interesting. Great idea! It's really cool that it can serve as a 2 in 2 out AI. Very handy to simplify recording setup while travelling. I'm looking forward to the memory man version of this :)
(SWITCHABLE 3/4 digital CHANNELS FOR HEADPHONE OUT PLS!) Love it! This fits my needs so much as someone who resamples alot, sending stuff out of daw to pedals and back in daw. My one request would be having the Headphone out also switchable to digital channels 3/4. I would love to use this as the one main interface on my guitar pedalboard for MacBook. But if I can switch a channel, I won't be able to use it as a daw fx send to a reamper
Pretty cool for some applications 👌 even for some industrial songs that I actually used the real muff but it sound quite as good as this! Wow Pretty awesome bro
Please apply this to all your biggest hits like the deluxe memory man, black finger, small stone, hog, slicer, maybe even design a modded/ stripped stereo channel strip with an assignable stereo ext pedal that can, for example, pan from an eq sweep on one side to something entirely different on the other. May change the game for bass players that biamp and would have tons of benefit in the studio. Something along the lines of the colour box 2, bax bangateer, elektron heat, or any ehx bass pres.
As far as I can see you don't even need to run any audio cables when working within DAW? Is all audio from and to the unit going through USB? That's amazing.
@@EHX also... What happens when one tries to put several instances of the plug-in on several tracks simultaneously? I understand using it on sends but I presume it can only process one audio stream at a time?
Every pedal builder should be watching this and taking notes. Building pedals as if we are living in 1972 doesn’t make sense. I don’t think all pedals need to be like this, but I think many could be. The part of the video I don’t understand is why he is controlling the pedal using a mouse. Isn’t a major advantage of this (relative to a plug-in) that I can control it using dedicated physical knobs? For digital-based pedals they could (and should) leave the processing on the computer (which has way more power) and focus on providing a simple physical interface in the box. A digital delay is an obvious example.
Some are comfortable with using a mouse while others want to twist a knob. You can do either with the Big Muff Hardware Plugin. The advantage is having the option you're most comfortable with.
Not to be a downer, but some hidden features like an EQ, Noise Gate and Compressor would of really made the presets shine. I mean it is a plugin after all. Still, great step forward. Wonder where this will go now
Its not a plugin though, its a plugin interface controlling a digitally controlled analog pedal, adding a comp, eq and noise gate would be way more components.
@@EHX Thats fair. Coming back to this, I think I underestimated the tone bypass and wicker switch as part of the preset function. Really hope this takes off. Exciting indeed.
if EHX want, they can build a all-in-one DAWless plugin that put all their popular pedal in it. can't wait to see a huge box that paint Big Muff Memory man small clone small stone and blablabla on its face. It will be a monster.
@@EHX thank you for the reply. I still don't get it though. Analog circuits/signal paths exist in the physical realm, so how can digital information affect them since it only belongs in the virtual realm?
Okay now this is next level. a digitally controlled analog pedal with daw integration should be the future. Question though, is the midi controllability only with a computer over usb?
So essentially it reamps the track into the pedal and back to the daw with built in delay compensation? If EHX came out with a USB reamper/interface then I’d be first in line to buy one
Can I bring my DAW into my pedalboard like you can do with the Omec Teleport? Because if so this could replace that and my current fuzz on my pedalboard.
This would work in theory, but be aware that when using the IO for interfacing purposes, you lose functionality of the plugin. You can still use the analog Big Muff circuit, but that runs direct into your DAW as the input signal, not something that can be later processed in the plugins section.
@@EHX Thanks for the reply. What I want to be able to do is run my soft synths THROUGH my guitar rig, which is how I currently use the Omec. So I think you're saying it CAN do that.
Can I hook up my flange pedal between my guitar and the Big Muff Hardware Plugin and will I hear the flange pedal on my DAW? I always wanted a USB version of Radial Engineering's EXTC Stereo box, that worked like a plugin insert.
From the engineer: There are a couple ways to hook up the Big Muff Plugin, so it depends on what else they’re doing. If they’re using the pedal as an audio interface, then yes, they can plug the guitar into the flanger, then the output of the flanger into the Big Muff Plugin. The flanged guitar signal will then be recorded. If they’re using the pedal as a hardware plugin, then no. This routes the signal coming from the computer into the input of the Big Muff, and the output of the Big Muff back to the computer. In this situation they wouldn’t really be using a guitar, either, or their guitar would be plugged into a separate audio interface. In which case they just put the flanger in between the guitar and the audio interface. Lastly, there’s also a way to set up the Big Muff Plugin as a sort of re-amp interface. You just need to be clever with the routing in your DAW. Set the Big Muff as your DAW’s audio interface, then run the output of the track you want to flange to Output 1 on the Big Muff. Then set up another track to record Input 1 from the Big Muff. Then make sure your DAW’s master output isn’t going to the outputs on the Big Muff. Connect the output of the Big Muff to the input of the flanger, and vice versa with the output of the flanger and the input of the Big Muff. This setup, like the one above, wouldn’t really be using a guitar at the same time - it would be meant for adding flanger to an already-recorded track.
How does this work outside of your audio interface? Does the pedal just become a vst controller like what TC does? Or do you need to configure daw to send audio out both the interface and USB to the pedal?
So this can work as an interface but does not need to. When hooking up to the computer, your DAW will ask you if you want to use it as an interface. If you want to use your existing interface, select no. It will still be hooked up your DAW. Then you just open the plugin like any other 3rd party plugin in your DAW and that's how audio gets sent to the Big Muff. No need to configure audio paths. It's just another plugin but the audio goes through the analog circuit of the Big Muff via USB. As far as what's controlling what, it's actually the other way around. What happens in the plugin in your DAW controls the analog hardware, as opposed to the hardware controlling something on the computer. The plugin however will respond to changes made on the hardware.
