My Italian grandparents, who came to America when they were young teens, had a home in an Italian section in the city where I live and it was a piece of heaven. The whole lot with the house couldn't have been more than a 1/4 acre if that. Yet they grew all of their own organic apples, pears, peaches the size of a softball, and vegetables. He had a knack for grafting more than one variety of apple with pear in one tree. And climbing the almond tree to shake the nuts free was my favorite chore! Over the years the garden section grew, leaving a small patch of lawn. They had a pit at the back of the garden where none-meat food scraps were dumped including eggshells, garden waste, ground clamshells( that we would dig up at low tide, and a mixture of rabbit and chicken poo he got from his cousin's farm. It broke down into the blackest rich & soft loamy soil I have ever seen and it was rotated into building up the garden beds. You could dig with just your hands it was that loose! They also had a traditional grape arbor that covered a patio area that had 2 very long tables for family gatherings. Along with some of the best food I've ever had, they served home-made wine from that arbor. They also had a large basement with a "wine cellar or root cellar," where he could keep the large 50-gallon wood casks of wine and vinegar he made. He imported some grapes from his brother's farm in Italy with his. He would say in broken English, that they were a piece of home and what made his wine so good. Even the kids were served wine at dinner time in small orange juice glasses as was the way in Italy. During the grape harvest time, the whole family would get together, (they had 13 children who all went on to have their own large families) and we would go into the basement where my grandmother had a second kitchen set-up to do all of her canning and cooking for the grape harvest pressing party. Between eating, drinking, and dancing the traditional folk dance called the Tarantella, we all took part in turning the big wooden wheel on a 200 yr old grape press- adults and kids. You spoke of the cement posts that anchored the grapevines that you saw in Italy. My grandparent's grape arbor had posts made of 6" wide steel pipes filled with cement and a wood cross latch top of redwood, at about 10 ft above the tables under them. They were made with cement so they would last more than one generation. I thought I would share those memories that I cherish, with you. God Bless.
This video is cinematic. Beautifully conceived and executed. Yes there was that weird shot... but doesnt detract. The conversation of hole and planning juxatlosed with the edited scenes of plans is a perfect planning process. Loved you did this around your stove top like a crackling fire. It was so soothing and 100% there's that weird little lull... and it's perfect to plan.
I have the greatest admiration for you two. The way you think, the way you live with intention, the beauty(aesthetics) of all you do and are, your respect and appreciation for your lives, your land, your family, your home, your community. Awe inspiring.
You two are the only people I know that would fry donuts outside when it’s snowing...love it! I think I was drooling watching you and the kids eat them 😉. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and dreams for the farm. I look forward with anticipation to what you have to show and teach us in the coming year. Blessings.
Watching your videos is positively therapeutic! Loved the casual, intimate flow of this one. I got your book Seasons at the Farm for Christmas, and I feel so immersed in your world when I read it. Makes me want a farm, too! ;) Thank you for sharing these magical moments with us all! :) (As another commenter said, Shaye, your style is lovely! The scarf and jacket look stunning on you!)
Great idea to fry them outdoors! We had a family gathering this fall and fried onion rings out on the camp stove. They were SO yummy! Seemed like I couldn’t fry them fast enough, they would get scooped up and devoured as they came out of the enormous cast iron skillet. Great memories! I love how you make everything beautiful.
I really love this. My family is moving into a farmhouse this year and we are planning and dreaming our gardens and owning chickens for the first time! I am so excited.
Love!! It makes me so excited about everything coming up on our property this year. Always plan bigger than you think! Then even if you don't accomplish everything you wanted to, you still have a ton of things to look back at and say, wow, look at all we DID accomplish!
Totaly beautiful setting! You are good!I'm so intrigued by your esthetic approach when filming.Absolutely delishes! And your conversation is lovely!Thanx!
I just got two of your books for Christmas and I’m already done reading through the cookbook. I can’t wait to read your homestead book now! You’re such an inspiration!!
After winter solstice my brain thinks spring I'm glad to see you cooking outside in the snow. I love listening to you both planning your garden. My grandkids have learned to never say they are bored around grandma cuz I always have a list of things to be worked on. Blessings
LOVE your videos...the music, the talks, the dreaming, the slowness of it all...beautiful. So sweet for Stew to make lattes before heading outside ☺️. YUM! So true when you said to garden just because it is beautiful... thank you for teaching me that. I have always gardened for the purpose of food. But learning to see my gardens as a place to also be creative and grow beauty. Turns those gardens into something amazing. Also.... can you share the recipe for your dough? Looks delish. 🤗🤗.
I love this on so many levels. The doughnuts....my goodness, what to say....serve me up one! The planning and hope for the year coming. I love this time of year, too. So full of hope. Though, admittedly, a few pounds less would be great....But, never mind that because the new year isn't quite here yet....pass me a doughnut!

That's what I like about this channel. God bless
Hehe, those sweet little faces with powdered sugar. It's precious! Our plans involve a lot of work, but probably not beauty this year. We'll be starting to build a small house, and probably something for me to milk out of the rain and sleet. I still plan to plant a million nasturtium, zinnia, sunflowers, and calendula though, and tons of vegetables. Their flowers will have to be my beauty until I can design the pretty spaces.
I think I’m drawn to your videos because I enjoy your family interaction. Plus you caught my attention when you stated your Love Language was Acts of Service of which your husband has plenty to give. Made get out Gary Chapman’s book and read it again. I prefer a simple cup of medium coffee with lots of cream and sugar or a cup of decaf upside down caramel macchiato. Projects are fun to watch including the process and finished product. I like how Stu is getting inside your head with his questions
You two look so cute, while enjoying einkorn doughnuts! I bake with einkorn flour too! It is really sticky! I found that if I make the dough a little more dense than too soft it works better! But it is delicious! Really hearty! Hope your plans for the new year come into place! Wish you blessings in the new year!
Mouth-watering... I do not even eat doughnuts because they are so calorie-dense but when they are homemade, an exception has to be made! And that espresso! YUM!
Happy New Year from Finland! You guys have a lovely family and the thing your have there, house, garden, animals and everything looks so nice. I value a lot that kind of sustainable life. I like also your humour you have between each other. And top of all, your videos are very aesthetic to look at. Thanks - Tessa
Girl! I know it’s not a fashion vlog but your snow style is on point! Love the maroon and blue and where are those gloves from-the brown palm and blue on the outside is great!
You guys are all sooo cute. It reminds me back when I was your age ,my husband and I were hippies and your life style was then called Mother Earth living. We lived it for a while and then then life’s more modern conveniences came about and changed our ways. Love watching your videos.
I’m so glad your tv show DIDNT get picked up. This is so much better!!! ♥️ looking forward to this your videos in the fall and winter of this year, as those are My favorite seasons!!
Two blue birds in a nest there building full of eggs and dreams, may “God” be at the center with His blessings filling each room of life with joy and wonders from above. God bless the two of you and all of your family. (Old guy from Arkansas)🇺🇸thx for sharing.

I'm so envious of the amount of quiet time you get even with four kids! I have two and I wouldn't get 30 seconds into making a video before they were climbing all over the contests dumping the flour over. 😂
Yum, nothing like lard to make a deep fried donut taste delicious. Great video and looking forward to the new designs on your homestead. Happy 2019, may God bless your family abundantly. :-)
Sounds exciting and fun, happy for you guys! We have a lot to do here at our house as well. I’m amazed at how much you get done with kids, I’m stressed with just my toddler and one on the way. How do you get so much done with your kids at home? I’d love your tips!
The doughnuts look delicious! Maybe they can make an appearance in the February cooking community recipes ;0) Looking forward to seeing the meadow garden develop. You are going to love the quaking aspens, out of all of my trees they are my favorite. Nothing compares to the rustling of the leaves in the breeze. Happy New Year!

My husband and I left the city about a year and a half ago. Sold everything we didn't think we really needed and moved to Okanogan county onto 40 acres of raw land. We are building our home and living in a travel trailer while doing it. I work from home and enjoying sneaking a video or two in, when I am bored with computer work. Your videos are great fun to watch and really show that simple yet rich life we are trying to create. Keep them coming. :)
There is just something about the Okanagan. I love it here, and you know right away when you see it. It has such an unique look! Hi! - Your Northern Neighbour
Just subscribed. Love the content that you share. We just got our 24 x 30 pole barn garage enclosed. We also have an outside kitchen, just outside of the house that we love. This Spring 2019 moving my husbands work shop to the garage, so we can remodel the inside of the building for our Roadside Market business. Then clean out and redo another building to move my husbands work shop into. Praying everything gets done, before winter of 2019. God bless.
I think your husband is very lucky you have four kids clean work in the garden and help him home school and cook 3 meals a day. Mine lucky to get dinner. Has always done his own laundry we take turns doing cleaning and I don't work. So I guess I am the lucky one. God bless you and your wonderful family.

Know you are in WA..assuming east of the cascades. We are planning a move there to live, hopefully this spring. Will be west of the cascades (Seattle side) to be near family. Retired and have options..any ideas about some areas to look? Not interested in big cities.
We live north of Seattle, and it is BEAUTIFUL all around here! So many lovely places to live. When I think about buying property eventually, I honestly can't make up my mind exactly where. We love exploring through scenic drives, and find cities smaller than Seattle (like Everett or Bellingham) or charming towns on the smaller side, like La Conner or Concrete. Come explore before you decide! ;)
@@DansonforJoy Thank you so much for the input. Our sons work in Seattle and we are looking to move somewhere above. Been window shopping online for a year. Can't wait to move!
I keep rewatching this over the years. I love this video so much. Your current content is so good, but this tides me over until the next segment. 💓
I love the way you and your husband talk, really incredible!

I looked at the prints in the snow and thought, "when did you get velociraptors????"
joyjamiebrady to be fair, chickens are modern day dinosaurs 🦖 lol

Beautiful snowy day!
