    for anyone confused Hatamoto basically means generals bodyguard

    • @PaulvonOberstein
      @PaulvonOberstein 7 месяцев назад +19

      Literally translated, yes. But under the Tokugawa shogunate, hatamoto conferred a status much greater than mere bodyguard. It was more like being appointed a colonel (i.e., a high ranking officer) in Tokugawa's army. Supposedly hatamoto also had the right to an audience with the shogun.

      I think you're getting the idea from Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai?
      Hatamoto literally means 'around the flag', or, in western military terms, a flag/standard bearer. A roman equivalent would be the Eagle-bearer. His main duty is not to guard the leader, but a rallying point for the troops.

      When the Edo period began, a hatamoto was a direct retainer of the shogun. I believe they had the right to request an audience with him. Below the hatamoto were the gokenin, who were low ranking with very small stipends.

    I love that, after declaring that he can no longer refer to Blackthorne as "Anjin" (barbarian) and giving him the more honorable title, Hatamoto, he concludes the scene by referring to him once again as "Anjin." Perhaps habit, perhaps an indication that it may not be 100% genuine...
