I agree it's disappointing by Shapovalov, but Darderi problem was purely mental. He runned in all directions like a beast since he got broken.

Obviously i'm not a superstar but.. I'm playing tennis and for example the last time i didn't make a single double fault in the whole two-setter match. Yes, pros want to be effective on their second serve also but 14 double faults a joke i say.
Thing is, Shapo's serve is basically a very fast serve (obviously) that he uses as a first strike weapon. He's built his game style around having it either win points outright, or setup the +1. And yes, while we talk about the doubles, maybe what is missed amongst all the criticism, is how many points he has WON using it the way he wants to use it.
Look at you, for the flip side. You have a relatively conservative serve, right? No double faults, right? Well, you never got anywhere, and I would wager that a big part of that is because you never pushed hard enough, like Shapo.

@@bigrobsydney Shapo used to have a very good, effective serve several years ago. He was able to hold his serve for whole sets without making errors. Something totally changed in 2021. He was tinkering with his serve motion and he's been a double fault machine since then, making 10+ double faults in every match, 3 years in a row. And of course, coupled with all the other unforced errors, this has turned a promising young star into an irrelevant journeyman on the ATP Tour.

What happened with Darderi? In the next points he didn't look hurt at all, running like crazy and etc...
he was cramping. the big thing that he was struggling to do for a few games was push off the left leg, which is particularly demanding after you hit a backhand on the run and have to slide and push to recover. Shapo couldn't maintain his mental focus and didn't put the match away while darderi was struggling. by the time of the tiebreak, it looked like darderi was feeling fine again.
