I really like this video. I knew a lot of exchange students and it is so exciting to see what you are experiencing being a part of our community and our culture. I like the end where you're talking about the trips. I really recommend all of you to watch this and what Trondheim and Norway have to show you. That you come and visit these places. it's a huge experience and a motivating trip. I believe that, when going into the fjords, you will meet someone that you find interesting.

I lived 12 years in Trondheim, 5 of them at Moholt student village. Cool that you liked the place and took the opportunity to get around and see stuff, like the NTNU cabins (I heard you say Rindal? I grew up nearby).

I don't live in Trondheim anymore. I moved to Oslo a few years back :P But I prefer Trondheim to Oslo, no doubt. It's such a beautiful city. I miss it a lot!

I loved hearing you speak Portuguese on your vlogs! It’s obvious that you come from, what the Azoreans call, the Continent! Azoreans don’t use the ing ending when speaking unless they are speaking to children. And yes you speak better than me because Portuguese kids in Canada grow up speaking a mix of English & Portuguese with their parents (my Spanish friends complain that their kids don’t speak Spanish well instead they’re speaking Spanglish, a mix of Spanish & English!).
Your videos bring back many memories of my time as a student in university with all its accompanying STRESS, getting kicked out of computer labs when a class comes in, etc!

Your experience as an exchange student is really similar to mine 2.5 years ago. Great video for newcomers. The bus was not that expensive in my opinion.

I had experienced this ! U r so right .. Norway won't be as anyone would expect it .. At the beginning u'll feel cold any sooo lonely and stressed and u'll difficulties making friendships , but then after u had learned the language and spent some time with the Norwegians and have ur own work or study .. U'll be alright

But if you pay for a year pass (provided you can afford the up front cost) it's actually quite cheap, especially with a student discount.

Didn’t you see any Northern Lights? I went to Iceland in December just to see them & even though I could have just gone to northern Canada there was this Ethical Deal that had everything included meaning return flights, hotel, the Blue Lagoon & the hunt for the Northern Lights! Being from Canada’s Wet Coast, it rains a lot because it is a rainforest (so that’s why we call it Wet Coast as well as West Coast), & it snows sometimes. Anyways I was prepared for the cold & was quite comfortable in Iceland with my thermal underwear, hiking boots with the slip on things that allows you to walk on ice without falling (most of the time!😂).
I’m surprised that you were so cold indoors because in Iceland & in Canada all my friends that have Scandinavian ancestry like to crank up the heat so high that at first I thought they were trying to cook me! In Iceland I almost fell out the window trying to open it because I needed a key to get into the thermostat to lower it. The front desk were surprised that I found it 🥵! And yes the days were so short that it disoriented me. I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone!
Do the doors in Norway open out instead of in like in Iceland, Denmark & Sweden? I almost gave myself a concussion the first time I tried to open a door when it suddenly opened out towards me!🤷♀️

Hi vilde! :) Yes, I studied in English! There are a lot of master courses taught in English that you can choose from. But I think that is only in the masters... I+m not sure, but if I remember correctly, the bachelor is only in norwegian.
What do you mean with architecture program? We had to choose 2 or 3 courses, one elective and one main course, Each semester there is a big list of different courses (timber construction, 0 emission, landscape, 3d modeling, etc). Most main courses have a study trip to another country included. Some courses are group work, some are individual...

Shiz Alba Hi! I think you should choose courses in English. It's easier for you to feel more comfortable at school and to meet international students that are in the same situation as you. But of course I think you should try to learn to speak Norwegian anyhow ;)

It says at NTNU there's only a select number of courses taught in english. Was your course taught in english? The courses I want to take aren't taught in english.
As an exchange student I was only allowed to choose the courses that were taught in English :/

Oh wow! Congrats! :D I don't know much about the sustainable architecture courses (I was in the time construction program). I think that inside that theme you will have different options of courses to choose from. But again, I'm not really sure. Sorry :/

Hi Ricky! That sounds amazing! I'm sure you will love Trondheim. There is always a group that has all the student villages in a city, for example in Oslo is called sio, in Trondheim I think it's sit.no. You can go to their website and apply to the student villages and apartments you want. :)

Hi! Yes I think its possible.. I don't think its going to be easy, but it's definitely possible ;) You should search in bars, restaurants, stores, hotels and anything connected to tourism. Good luck!

i had applied to M.sc in sustainable architecture in NTNU and they rejected my application because they said other students had higher grades in their previous studies, even though i had a first division grade. I was really surprised because in architecture applications are usually judged by portfolio quality and the motivation letter and maybe experience. But they say i have a right to appeal the decision. Do you have any idea about such appeals and if they work ?
Hey! Yes.. that is very normal to happen. It's sometimes difficult to get accepted both in NTNU and AHO because they have such high standards. I think you should appeal, you never know... and also ask if its possible to stay in the waiting list, in case someone that was accepted gives up. ;) Good luck!

If you can find a way to stay please do because Portugal will be nearly uninhabitable very soon due to an abrupt methane driven temperature spike globally. Norway will be one of the most stable countries after the Loss of Arctic multi-year ice very soon 2 yrs max.
I really enjoyed your video! I will be spending the next two years in Trondheim for a master's program at NTNU, and I am somewhat apprehensive since I have not lived outside of the U.S. for an extended period of time. that is a very good question! The old town in Trondheim was my absolute favourite place! There is a lot of cozy cafes and restaurants. Regarding the hiking, that is easy too! You have forest, lakes and mountains everywhere around the city, and just by taking a tram you can get to incredible places to hike. So just explore!

Great video. How much would you say that you spent per month while living in Norways as an exchange student ?
If you don't spend money on useless things I would say around 800€ including rent. In some months I would spend less than that but I don't go out much or spend money on drinks at the bar or on restaurants.

Hi! It depends. You can choose either ones year or 6 months. When you are an exchange student official you are always a student from your original home country university. So when I came back I returned to the university I had before exchange.

I had 3 girl flatmates: one from France, on from Zambia and another from Uzbekistan :)

Hi! You have to apply and the best candidates are chosen to enter. This depends on your grades, your previous courses and ECTS, and in some cases they even ask for a portfolio or CV. ;)

The price of bus tickets for a student is actually quite low if you buy a long term one.
If you pay for 180 days with a proof that you're a student you can get those 180 days for 2280 NOK, or in other words a little over 12 NOK pr day.
That said, walking or biking is of course cheaper. =)

NTNU has several campuses around Trondheim.
The two big ones are Gløshaugen and Dragvoll.
Let's just say that Dragvoll is *not* close to the city center.
They're about equal distance from Moholt though.

It's not a town, it's a city.
The third or fourth largest in Norway depending on how you calculate it.
Oslo and Bergen is of course both bigger then Trondheim.
Stavanger is bigger or smaller then Trondheim depending on how you calculate what is or isn't a part of the city.
Tromsø is the city that's just behind Trondheim and Stavanger on the list being a little bit smaller then both.
Remember, the downtown area is only a small part of the city as a whole. ;-)
That said, I agree that it does have a small town vibe to it in a lot of ways. =)

I'm glad you where here a year when we actually did have snow...
But even in those videos you showed the amount of snow was somewhat limited...
Coastal cities like Trondheim is getting less and less proper snow.
The natural weather in the city is meant to include snow on the ground pretty much all winter even along the coastline.
However due to global climate change we're getting less and less of it, it's less reliable, it melts more often, its warmer and wetter snow often close to being sleet etc...
And yeah, that ice you mentioned, that was uncommon in the past (15-20 years ago) but now it's the new norm for the winter...

Make sure you have shoes that can fit thick socks comfortably with enough room to spare to allow them to fill with air that can work as insulation and to let the blood flow freely through your feet.
You *need* thick wool mittens as well as woll underwear.
It's not good enough with a single thick layer of clothing, you need several layers so you can strip of some of it when you get hot to reduce the amount of sweat as that'll make you deadly cold when you cool down again.
Mittens are better then gloves because your fingers are together in the same "pocket" in the mitten sharing heat instead of being separated like in a glove and the surface of the mittens is smaller in a way with more air inside it that kind of acts kind of insulating also wear a wool sweater.
Due to my Icelandic heritage I would actually recommend an *Icelandic* lopapeysa instead of something Norwegian as those are way warmer due to the much more loosely spun yarn allowing more air to be trapped inside the sweater and therefore more heat.
That does come at the cost of those being less durable and harder to produce though (meaning that the price tends to be high, but well worth it).
Lopapeysa is actually made in the same way that Norwegians made their sweaters back in the early middle ages.
The vikings didn't have knitting yet so they used another tecknique (that actually favours that kind of yarn) named nålbinding in Norwegian.

And when new more modern ways of spinning yarn was introduced the lopa type of yarn fell out of favour in Norway because it's harder to knit with since it's so loosely spun and because clothing made from it was less durable, a major drawback in those days when making clothing was way more labour intensive then it is today and the relative cost of new clothing was higher.

Yeah, lakes don't need to be dangerous at all, but there's warning signs you should look out for, things you should avoid doing etc...
For instance avoid walking on the ice near where the water might be moving like where the water is draining out of a lake as the ice there is generally thinner.
Check reports on ice thickness.
It can be smart to bring a tool to test the strength of the ice up front.
You might want to bring tools to help you climb out of the water if you *do* end up falling into it.
And there's courses you can take to teach you how to do so more effectivly.
Also, use cloths made out of wool as the innermost layer of clothing (as well as most of the other layers) as those will maintain some of the insulating effect even when wet once the water has settled inside the wool as the water won't move very much allowing you to maintain some more of your body heat.
Of course you *still* need to get out of the water as soon as possible and try to get as much water out of the wool as you can.
The wool will actually not feel wet once you get the amount of water down to less then about 30% of the weight of the wool itself.
id like to ask, if it was dificult to find ur apartment, as im studing arquitecture, and i like to spend a year studing there. how did u get the flat and how long did u start looking for it before u came there.

Ragnarox X hey, if I may answer in her stead :) Norway has housing priorities for foreign students, which means you actually have easier access to students apartments than the Norwegians! There is a great lot of student village's funded by the government all over the city to which you can apply. The organisation responsible for the student's housings is Sit (Studentsamskipnaden i Trondheim). On their webpage you will find information and application forms!
As she said in the video, it's a small city ~180k, but around 40k students! So the nightlife is really good (you've got like a bar street in the city centre, alot of pubs and cafes, most of all Samfundet - the red building!)

I'm 4-lingual almost 5 hahaha I speak spanish and a bit of french as well. :P Yeah! So many people have already asked me to make a video in Norwegian. I really have to do it :)
is it possible to find part time work there as a student? I have applied to do MA in Fine Art in NTNU.. but the high cost of living and prices of art supplies are a real concern to me, I would definitely need some sort of income to support myself while studying there.. thank you for your videos, they are so informative :)
It really depends on your school schedule, and if you can get a part time job were you can speak Norwegian. I have some friends that work in restaurants or hotels, for example, part time while they study so I guess you could maybe get a job as well :)
You could also try to get a scholarship!
