I watched this over cart more often. Like the ovals better than the single file love fests that were the road course races, with the exception of Cleveland. And more American drivers.
I enjoyed watch all the races. Double the events. I was at this Indy 500, my second. I was also at Milwaukee mile too that year. For a while during the split I was at Indy and Road America.
I had a friend was a USAC inspector on pit row remember him telling me AJ Foyt was so upset with Salazar he wanted him blacked flagged. Needless to say they did not do it.
Meanwhile at Michigan, CART is busy with the US 500 consisting of well known drivers but we all know what happened at the start. Whilst here in IRL, most of the drivers here weren't well known apart from Tony Stewart (which ends up retiring later in the race). The racing for the most part is also not very exciting. It really does feel like picking a poison on which one is better.
All the while, NASCAR capitalized on the IRL and CART split and turned the Indy 500 into the appetizer before the main course that was the Coke 600. Nowadays, the Indy 500 is THE highlight of Memorial Day weekend, while the Coke 600 has become nothing but an afterthought. LONG LIVE INDYCAR!
If you didn't knew Arie, Guerrero, Cheever or Brayton (RIP) back in the day, that was on you. Alboreto was also very well known in Europe. The race was pretty decent, all things considered
@IanTheMotorsportsMan_YT I'm not going to lie, I COMPLETELY forgot about Tony. I don't know much about Danny Ongais though. I wasn't even 3 years old yet when this race happened.
@@Hitherto90 Danny was mainly known to race in the Interscope Racing #25 car and won 6 races (sadly mainly known for his 1981 Indy 500 crash). He raced in Scott Brayton’s car, which would be his last ever IndyCar race
RIP Scotty
.
Nicest guy you'd ever meet.
RIP Scott Brayton.
I really love this IndyCar will be next year!🏎🏁

Who cares where the drivers are from unless you're racist?
First-ever Indy 500 under Indy Racing League
The time Indy 500 turned into cottagers race
This race doesn’t deserve a delta force opening.
Because?
Final year for the Ford Cosworths and other CART V8 engines at Indy.

gotta love USAC and their wonderful officiation back when they had their own IndyCar Series...
Rest in Peace, Scott Brayton
CART Champcars ftw!

And Scott Brayton died in practice. The winner of this Memorial Day battle is...NOBODY!

Luyendyk was in this race
@@adri9428Alboreto also rather under-rated tbh. Gone in an Audi R8 LMP test run in the same year we lost Earnhardt and Bob Wollek.
Later post the 1997 race too!
..in the Harrington box.
My favorite race! 🙌🙌
I'm ready
Indy 500 without Penske, Andretti, Ganassi, Rahal et al. from 1996 to 1999 were a blasphemy
LETS GOOOOOO!!!!!!❤❤❤❤
Did anybody ever see if she could sing before they offered this to her??
26/05/1996
Arguably the worst 500 feild ever.
The only notable name I see here is Arie Luyendyk, I'll give you that.
