Hi when I was in the Navy 1984, I saw these too, out of interest I asked a BR employee why two class 50 on a four coach train, simply it was the re deployment of drivers and or maintenance crew and locomotive. When doing my commando course around from Exeter area, again ,in the evening a four coach train was stabled and ran in the evening with drivers, crew and the cleaning staff from the carriage sidings at St David’s. Hope that helps R
Around this time - and certainly in 83-84 when I was regularly using the line - during the summer months the usual dmus for local trains in Cornwall up to Plymouth couldn't cope with the extra passenger traffic, day trippers, etc. Therefore locomotive hauled short formations, usually Class 50s with scratch stock from Laira, were deployed to ease the overcrowding. It was only a summer dated practice.
Only 4 coaches...what service was this
Sorry mate no idea - maybe local Cornish service

Probably a local to Plymouth. Double headed to get the locos back to Laira
