Great video, Eric. You touch on 3 cures for one problem very well here. It's easy to talk about where golfers should be in static positions. Communicating how the swing should "feel" is much more useful.
Turning the left shoulder back is an incredible image-feel. It gives me the sense of hitting through the ball rather than at the ball. I also have the sense that my club head speed has "quadrupled" without swinging any harder. The end result is a perfectly balanced finish. Can't wait for my next round.
Great teaching here. My ten year old is closed at impact and I haven't come up with anything to help until I saw this video. One of the three should work, whether hit something behind you with your left shoulder, turn shirt buttons to target or getting right shoulder ahead of the clubhead....thanks for this terrific technique.
Video is Gr8 for affirmation (or not as the case may be). However, whilst 'positions' can be checked semi- real-time, assuming you have a mirror or are hitting in a video studio, it is kinaesthetics (feelings) which are the more important. Not only can they be checked interactively at the range with almost instant performance feedback but they can be taken to the golf course. (after all we all have to fix stuff on the course once we 'lose it'- even Hogan attested to this). It seems ironic to me that, despite the wonderful advances in biomechanics science and video technology during my 40 year playing career, few (young) teachers are articulate enough to convey kinaesthetics properly- particularly on RUclips. You seem to have that ability so keep up the good work!
I have officially unsubscribed to all other golf instruction channels except for Eric Cogorno Golf, and George Gankas or GG Swing Tips. Keep bringing the clarity bro!
so far i think i like the left shoulder back and up. it's hard to say if i do it right though cuz many times the ball comes off the toe. i fight the slide of the hips and can get stuck from over tilting
Great video Eric! What do you think about the head rotating, a.k.a. Duval, Stenson, D.J., early in the downswing to help with upper body rotation? I have been incorporating that along with your shallowing the shaft with bowing and ulnar deviation and really hitting some very solid shots. Seems like when my head releases, the rest of my body follows but you don't see it being taught too much. Thanks for all the helpful videos!
Hi Eric, my name is William from down under, thank you for your demonstration! especially turn the left shoulder. I just want to be sure that by the time you turn the shoulder, my head should still watching the ball, and straighten my left leg at the samw ell? I
Sorry Eric, I just press the wrong button. What I mean is straighten my left leg at the same time? If you feel problem to reply at RUclips, you can reply to my personal e-mail at whonkl@gmail.com. looking forward to your reply Thank you and regards William
William...head should be watching the ball until impact...after impact it should follow the club/ball and keep turning. Don't want to keep down for too long or it will make it harder to keep turning chest. OKAY if eyes up early.
Hi Eric, thank you for your quick response. However, I still have one more question. I notice your left leg is straighten. Should I straighten my left leg once I start the down swing or after I hit the ball? Thanks again and have a great weekend. WILLIAM
Another awesome video mate! What's the feeling of your hands/arms on the downswing when you have this upper body rotation? Or do they freely drop and go with the body momentum?
For me personally...arms and hands feel like they arent doing anything when I rotate well. May have a wrist conditions feel, but not trying swing the arms or anything.
Eric, I think I've had a breakthrough but I'm not sure yet so my question is this. Do you think that many of us don't get the handle down far enough on the downswing? Because once I started dong this I noticed everything fall into place. Shallow strike, down at impact and excellent weight transfer into a fully extended finish. It 'feels' very low coming into the ball and it 'feels' like my body is reacting by opening up, shallowing and extending. 'Feels' like my body is 'saving' the shot from crashing 2 feet before the ball (point of impact). It's literally transformed my swing. So again, do you think many of us recreational golfers just don't bring the handle down to where it should be? Not so much 'pulling the handle down' but bringing it down on the arc I created with my stance and backswing. Thanks - David
I'm not sure I 100% understand but more or less I believe we are on the same page and my answer would be I see a lot of amateur golfers have what I would call "sequence" issues...which would include what you are mentioning.
Not technically speaking if we are talking very micro but 101 version is "yes" Shoulders still closed 45* around left arm parallel with hips close to square. ruclips.net/video/bScRl_O6UUo/видео.html
Hey Eric, I struggle with an over the top swing path and I slice my driver and hit ehhh contact fades with my irons. But when I try to hit the ball out right, it will start right and then fade more right. I played baseball before and it feels like my hands never release / my hands are so much more forward than my club face at impact. What video would you recommend watching? I can fix the swing path, it’s just the face is too open whether it be in to out or out to in. Idk if I need more upper body rotation to square the club face, or if I need to rotate my forearms more. I hope you answer you’re the best golf instruction Chanel on the tube
Hey Charlie! Sounds like your MAIN issue is your club face is too OPEN to the path Check these: ruclips.net/video/YQYqfXKfKY4/видео.html ruclips.net/video/lk8YHElvmxs/видео.html ruclips.net/video/lr8JV6ShmRI/видео.html
eric, i do exactly what you said. try to "clear" my left shoulder at the start of the downswing. had very good results but now feel like i'm cutting across the ball too much. did you say that we need to shallow the club first AS we do this? is it possible for your chest to be open TOO much on the downswing?
I have a bad habit of dropping the club too inside and hit big pushes or hooks. Will try left shoulder back feel...anything else to help this problem of too inside as it's plagued my swing for years. Thx
Hi Eric great videos! Can you help me understand this pivot concept more in detail pls? I can't for the love of god do this properly haha. Im like your student there where at the top of the backswing I'm feeling pressure on the left leg and I fire as soon as I feel it around 80/20. the way you break down the pivot , coming down into a squat/sitting position then firing the hips to the follow through is great but can you show this in medium speed and high speed? When I see you swing it doesn't look remotely like when you break it down. And i can't feel any leverage when I try to do it. Thanks a lot.
This is the part I struggle with. I'm scared to open up cause I go over the top. But I actually havent practiced opening up while swallowing the club cause I never though it was 2 separate things.
Yessir...2 seperate things! I would suggest shallowing the club and getting your path more to the right FIRST before doing rotation pieces. How to hit a draw video practice stations will do it for ya
I have been trying to do this exactly- My shaft gets too steep because I have a tendency to yank my hands down before I start the turn. Any other feel drills for stopping that?
Hey Philip, thanks for the message! Not sure how to answer this question... Do you mean when? or how much? How do you supinate....you supinate. Palm up motion.
opening left shoulder is also a big cause of slice. i had this issue to years until i learn sequence of the shot. almost had my chest close until my clubs got to last parallel. or else most weekend golfer start the down swing with opening shoulders and u get a nasty slice.
correct, separating the arms and shoulder was the mystery for me. i always start my down swing by turning my left shoulder "open". they said "feel attached" so my arms are very connected to my left shoulder. my swing plane is flat not very steep. but not letting the club drop first while opening the shoulder end up hitting fade every shot. the sequence i had was wrong. i CANT just open up my shoulder at the TOP of the swing, or else the only way the club can get to the ball is outside in.
Hey Eric...sorry to resurrect an old video, but can you explain what happens when you don't rotate the upper body through the swing (top to finish) in the way you teach? What it does when you DO rotate as you suggest? Some teachers say don't worry about rotating just swing the club with the arms and the body will follow. It's confusing with all the contradictions
Hey! Chest Rotation in downswing 1. Moves the low point of the swing forward 2. Arcs the hand path back in to the left past impact The TIMING is important.....watch this one for my favorite explanations/drills: ruclips.net/video/bScRl_O6UUo/видео.html&pp=ygUfRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vICBzaG91bGRlciByb3RhdGlvbg%3D%3D They stay 45* closed EARLY (that helps keep the arm/club IN first half of swing) then they open a lot to get low point forward and to arc hand path in
@@CogornoGolf thank you for taking the time to respond and for the link. I've seen that video but for some reason the amount of rotation needed has never sunk in. The last year or so I've struggled terribly with low point. I thought a light had gone on when playing yesterday with regard to focusing on and making a more deliberate effort to really get my upper body rotating. It seemed I was hitting better shots but would have occasional wild shots. I attributed those to timing getting off given I'm not used to focusing on really rotating a lot. I almost broke 40 on the front 9, which I haven't done in about 6 years. So you are confirming that not enough rotation can be a cause of fat shots? Because I've been on a frustrating and futile journey in an effort to get to the bottom of my tendency to hit ground before ball. Many lessons. Fixed a lot of swing flaws. No consistent change in low point.
Hey! So this conversation would be really easy is we could see your swing. But without seeing your swing we are making too many guesses/assumptions. If we could see could answer specifically, diagnose and fix for ya. If you don't get it sorted send swings to www.cogornogolf.com can help there
Thanks Eric, very instructive. Interesting to hear that most of us have their left shoulder left /open to the target! I Always try to square my left shoulder to the target which probably has the opposite effect as I hit it right of the target often!? Is it possible for you to do a video about "alignment"? Thanks again. Max from Holland

One word......WOW. Best explanation yet on shoulder rotation and correct feel. Thanks!
My pleasure Roger!
Sweet. Loved the line fix the rotation flaws and then fix the swing plane or other flaws.
Love these videos- all about 'feels'. Exactly the way we work on our swings at the driving range. (Very articulate too for me as a Brit).
Thanks, Mike!

For golfers who like to "hit" the ball this kind of feel seems excellent to finish the swing properly. Great vid!
Thanks :)
Great stuff once again!! I use my upper body torso. (Btw you are the only person on youtube I remove ad blocker for and let all the ads run :)

Hey man-yes, I love it! Absolutely advocate doing that! Eyes out earlier allows neck to turn, allow chest to turn....good for your swing for most.
Fantastic lesson. thank you.

Shallow arms and hands SEPARATELY from body opening is what best players do. How to hit a draw video practice station will fix that.

Watch how to fix a hook video...bucket drill with more rotation will fix it so long as your grip isnt jacked up

Search my name and "shallow your downswing" and you will see a bunch on that
How do you release the club at the same time.. supinate and rotate the left forearm and hand while doing this move?
Hey Philip, thanks for the message!

It seems like a body drive and hold release kinda move
