  • A trip back to the days when 'style wars' were just that - violent confrontations about the clothes you wore. Spring 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the bank holiday 'battles of the beaches', when hundreds of mods and rockers flocked to seaside resorts on scooters and motorbikes in search of thrills and spills.
    Timeshift tells the story of how this led to violence, arrests and widespread concern about the state of British youth. But mods and rockers had more in common than was first obvious - they were the first generation of baby boomers to reach their teenage years at a time when greater prosperity and wider freedoms were transforming what it meant to be young.

    The transformation - especially to England - since then has been drastic, unprecedented and saddening. We could have had a great country if not for the actions of the politicians.

    I m 64 . I would have been 4 years old in 1964 .yet this is also me .I have for many many years have leaned towards the sixties.soul or northern soul which it became known as at the end of the sixties iwas into .then came in 1979 the mod revival along with phil Daniels and quadrophenia .it hasn't t gone away .over the many years the music the mods and everything to do with the sixties and mod movement has still been going strong. My brother and me with mates who we knew in the mid to late 70 s we had the scooters then my brother had a g s vespasian loads of lights and mirrors mod ralleys still going now as then. Northern soul the mods and the unforgettable sixties even though I wasn't there in 64 I m still in around about way apart of it all sharing the experience.

    Youth would never have it so good again till the 80's
    That was a fantastic time as well. There were more than two factions, all with their philosophy, music and clothes.
    As part of that, the Rockers were there as they hadn't ever disappeared but had a new twist with the hair metal bands as well as new heavy rock that came up through the 70's, and funnily enough, the Mods had a resurgence and the punks and Skinheads came back and the posers/New Romantics were born.
    It was a great time as well. I was there.
    After that, it's been a graveyard for youth ever since. Nothing that strong, nothing that passionate has happend again.
    I feel sorry for the Youth of today.

      It was and it was a great time to be young. I was a Mod, I had good clothes and my scooter was a Vespa GS 160, my friends and I used to finish work on Friday and then we used to take what money we had and head off in a direction somewhere that we decided at the point of departure and rode our scooters to varios places, called into clubs, bars and pubs and invariably got invited to a party, or picked up a girl and a few times we ended up sleeping on beeches, or anywhere that we could find, then off again the next day to do the same again. Home Sunday night, back to work on Monday. It was a great time, we had the freedom that being mobile gave us, we were sort of in a club, we focussed on making our scooters look as good and as bright as possible and the girls would mainly go for the clean cut of the Mod. I never had any kind of trouble with Rockers and if I remember correctly, there was a Rockers cafe on the Sidcup Bypass (or somewhere in that area) called Jacksons, my friend and myself were riding past and it really started to rain hard, so, we went into Jacksons and the only thing that happened was that a girl said to me "you`re in the wrong hole aint you" smiled and walked off to join her group of biker friends. Our scooters really looked out of place there but the Rockers were totally nonchalant with us being there, it was quite a good atmosphere.

    Interested to see original interview footage with the Mods 'n' Rockers' but not sure why everyone keeps talking about the fights as if it's a mystery? Just tribal stuff. Wasn't about clothes & hairstyles' - those were the outward signs that marked them- they were just different tribes' coming to blows as tribes' have done since man first walked upright.

    What I find strange is this is all over fashion.. At least football hooligans had a sports teams lol. In America, we answered this problem with a war in Vietnam. It didn't kick off for a couple more years though...

    Mods had delusions of grandeur, in episode 2 "our scooters sound like Ferrari's" 😂😂
    In this episode "seeing all the sun hitting the chrome, there's something about this that reminds me of medieval knights".
    They really believed they were superior but in truth they were pretentious fools.

    The Only Reason Why Mods Ride Scooters Is.....They Cannot Handel A REAL BIKE !!!

    • @honestchris7472
      @honestchris7472 4 года назад +3

      Ironically, I have had both and the harder to ride is the scooter, this is because on a bike, you actually sit on it and you are more a part of the machine. When you ride a scooter, you are perched on top with nothing to actually hold onto except for the handlebars, also scooter wheels are a lot smaller and have less surface rubber on the road and do not have the same road holding capabilities as a motorbike, furthermore, although a bike is faster, if you do 70mph on a scooter, it feels like doing a 100 on a bike, in other words the excitement is the same. The fastest that I have been on a motorbike is 125mph so I can handle a real bike. I don`t know why you think that because you own a motorbike, a person owning a smaller scooter would not be able to ride it, when clearly they can.
