I loved your reference to "pepper in" to the conversation biblical details and not underestimate the power of God's word. Jason PK I’ve heard about that before, but I’m sure that the people of German, and Austrian, Swiss, Denmark, and Liechtenstein are descendent of Scandinavian ancestry due to the Rune writing system along with the Norse pantheon they worshiped. We do have a lot of stuff about them during the time of the Byzantine empire as well. A lot of their writers mentioned them quite a lot.

My understanding when I study about this Jonah story in the Old Testament is not because Jonah was afraid to go and preach to the Assyrian‘s. Or he did not want that got to forgive them that’s not true. he was afraid 😱 from the Assyrian that to find out that his people they did not believe in God.Especially the true God. And the Assyrians knew the real God. Before them.
Marlin I think I know what you mean, Jonah is definitely worthy of meditation. I suspect Jonah’s defiance went beyond hatred of an enemy that he regarded as objectively vile, but what truly terrified him was the LORD was indicating a desire to either enlargen the circle of His favor to include a dreaded enemy or worst of all redraw the circle altogether and no longer include his people - Israel. Either way, Jonah was never going to willing participate in that plan, and through his determined resistance Jonah gives us one of the most vivid Bible stories of all time but even more importantly reveals exactly how committed God was to reconciling even the worst of the worst! The application for me is the courage to follow where the LORD leads in “loving my enemies” despite my own biases and allegiances. I think about Yeshua/Jesus’ ministry in Samaria (mentioned in John 4) against the backdrop of the universally accepted enmity (between Jews and Samaritans) on both sides. Yeshua/Jesus however refused to accept the status quo - instead applying His principle of loving your enemies and seeking to create a future where Jews and Samaritans would be reconciled!
Shalmaneser and Sennacherib and the fact the latter was killed by his own sons is mentioned in the Book of Tobit (Tobit 1:2, 18, 21, & 24). This book also points out what you, Bruce, mention as a biblical basis for the Sunday lesson in the previous lecture. You base that only on the Proverbs, but that can also be found in Tobit 1:13. PS. This series of lectures is absolutely fascinating! Thanks a billion!

God selected Assyrians to do the work for Him here in the Earth. So, when Jewish depart from God, therefore, God used Assyrians to bring them Home. Same way, God used Jonah to bring Assyrians Home when Ninavah people depart from God. So, God called Assyrians ( the work of my hands.) Read Isaiah chapter 19: 23-25.

In your lecture you said Hazel, Joram, and Ahaziah vs. Assyria, but 2 Kings 8:28 says "[Ahaziah] went with Joram... To make war against Hazel... He fought against Hazel king of Syria". From this passage, it sounds like it was actually Israel and Judah vs. Syria with Assyria not being directly involved. Could you help clarify what is going on? Thank you!

Jonah's was not lackluster. To reach the hearts of many he gave his all. Before the entered into the city we know he would give his best from what is written at Jonah 2:9. Jonah obeyed God's command in as noted in Jonah 3:3 and he did so with great effort.

Makes sense. My initial cry to the Lord at 33 and the feeling of peace and love He gave me after I humbled myself, changed me drastically and immediately. I had no anger, hatred, or enemies. On the flip-side, my former so-called enemies never flayed, mutilated, or castrated my people.

Mr Bruce Gore thank you very much for all these lectures. I am working my way through them. I was a little disappointed though that I heard no mention of 2Kgs 14:25 (speaking of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel)

and how that would fit in with the historical context and story. Would this be a victory against Assyria or some other nation? Can you help me here please?
"Hamath" is the opening into the Coele-Syrian valley, and the city itself was between eighty and ninety miles further to the north, on the middle Orontes. The "entering in of Hamath" generally referred to the northern boundary of the Holy Land (Num. 34:8; Josh. 13:5; Judg. 3:3; 1 Kings 8:65). The "sea of the plain" is probably the Dead Sea. The territory recovered likely included the trans-Jordanic region (though probably not Moab or Ammon). Jonah's date is established by this passage, so he was a contemporary of Hosea and Amos, but earlier than Micah. His prophecy concerning Jeroboam appears to relate to the early part of Jeroboam's reign. Gath-hepher is mentioned in Joshua, under the name of Gittah-hepher, as a city of Zebulon (2 Kings 19:13), not far from Mount Tabor. It is possibly identified with El-Meshhed north of Nazareth, where the tomb of Jonah is traditionally located. The recovery of the land mentioned here is not likely related to Assyrian holdings at the time.

I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee. [28] And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee. [29] I will not drive them out from before thee in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee. [30] By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land.
I believe the main lesson of jonah is verse 3:10 When God saw their deeds that they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.
This should teach us that all you need to do to get G's forgiveness is turn away from sin and do good. It doesn't say G saw their prayers or sackcloth it says He saw their actions.

I am very thankful the tie in to Assyria "going dark." Perhaps one reason no record remains is that later rulers destroyed all evidence of their grandparents conversion.

Maybe the king did summon Jonah to preach in his courts. We are not given all the information, regarding the ministry of Jonah. We are only given the information necessary to make the point of the story.
Bruce, thanks for kindly replying. Are you open to a rather different take? That the king couldn’t summon Jonah because Jonah had intentionally "vanished" by hiding in total isolation somewhere in Nineveh. At Jericho, God told Joshua to march over a period of seven days, But at Nineveh, God told Jonah to proclaim “In just 40 days more Nineveh will be overthrown.” This message could be proclaimed for only one day, because if there were a second day the “40” would have to change to “39.” To the superstitious Ninevites, this stunning message by a lone, courageous, Hebrew-speaking prophet who "vanished" after only one day of preaching was completely effective. Jonah keeping himself isolated from the Ninevites until he left the city at vs. 4:5 also can explain why Jonah hadn't realized that the Ninevites had repented. How does that sound?
The consequence of not repenting when the prophet went through Nineveh, was destruction. How would you like to go into the capital city of the enemy, the brutal enemy, and preach destruction if they did not repent? No wonder he "delayed" in a boat and a big fish!
The reason Nineveh repented in sackcloth and ashes was bcuz of the eclipse..... it was the sign of jonah..... like the one we had a couple years ago...... it was the sign of jonah as well.....

In your slide on Asher-nirari (754-745), you showed Uzziah reigning from 767-740, followed by Jotham reigning from 750-735. I’m a little confused by the overlap. Also in 2 Chronicles 26:3, it was recorded that Uzziah reigned for 52 years. Would you please enlighten me? Thank you
Uzziah was struck with leprosy for violating the rules of the temple, and while he still technically remained king, his son Jotham co-ruled with him during the last years of his life.

Great analysis as always. Bruce is very convincing with respect to his description of the Assyrians ruling a "proto-empire". That is also my reading. They ruled by fear, and were mostly a warlike and simple people. Their texts are about war and brutal amusement, not high culture. That is why I do not believe that they carved with quartzite. I suspect they inherited much of the treasures we associate with them.
This period presents a great mystery of the bronze age. We are told that great empires existed in the bronze age, empires that built the pyramids and Baalbeck. Yet, when these great empires fell, the arts of politics were lost. The language remained, and indeed advanced in the "dark age". Metallurgy also survived, and indeed improved to iron smelting, in this "dark age".
What kind of dark age is it, where language advances to alphabet, and metallurgy advances to iron, yet political and cultural arts of mass organisation are lost?
How can great empires collapse in this way, with all technical language thriving, yet every piece of cultural language dying? It is not possible, on the face of it.
I think the bible is, curiously enough, fairly accurate. Abraham was not wandering out into the glorious bronze age of majestic Pharaohs who built the pyramids. He was wandering an empty land, except for tribal people in relatively small settlements. All the big stone work attributed to the bronze age empires dates to long before.

The biblical narrative follows scripture rather well, however the biblical time record is presented as to a modified Assyrian time frame which is a corruption to the biblical time record. As to this I add this that profane (common) history must conform to the biblical time record even by Assyrian time frame.
Assyria seems to have been bribed into a superpower, I guess just like Rome. Just as Asa bribed Syria in 2Chronicles 16, Ahaz bribed Assyria against Israel and Syria in 2Kings 16. Both Asa and Ahaz were rebuked for doing so.

With the story of Jonah everyone knows about him being swallowed by a fish, fewer but most people remember that he went to Ninevah and the people repented but to me the part that is overlooked and is never discussed is to whom exactly did the people of Ninevah repent since their main deity was ashur along with all the lesser mesopotamian deities. Did the most powerful and reportedly brutal state in the known world convert because of one man's warning? Or is there something else to the story? Just saying
Their repentance involved a recognition of the true God. Israel was always called to be a 'priest' to the nations, proclaiming the true God, and at times the surrounding nations recognized that truth, but generally they did not.

Good points about this series: 1. admirable attempt to study the Bible as part of known history 2. good delivery. Bad points 1 too reliant on conjectures 2. non-admirable attempt to turn speculation into conclusions.
Perhaps part of the reason the Assyrians in Ninevah listened to Jonah was because their god was, I believe, Dagon. Dagon was a type of fish-god.
Dagon was a Philistine god. The Assyrians worship Assur, after which their civilization was named.

Israel never existed during the times of Assyrian rule. Neither was Abraham, the Father of Israelis, born yet.
The descendents of Abraham werent called as Israelites really. The term Israelites came much later some 700AD. The sons of Jacob were semitic since Jacob married a Canaanite woman. were Canaanites. Abraham was not Assyrian. He was a descendent of Jonah from Nineveh.

If there is an etymological relation between Assyria, Isra-el , Ezra and Syria we must admit some type of connection. In many P.I.E. languages a prefixed " A" could signify the imperfect sense. However, to the best of my knowledge, Sanskritist have made no connection between Sans Asura and Surya ( sun). Also, I think philologists have shown that the name JEHOSAPHAT is the Sanskrit BODHISATTVA which in Prakrit is BOSAT. Different renderings include ASOV/ AESOP/HOTEP/JOSEPH. In the Buddhist / Christian tale of Barlaam and JOSAPHAT philologists have traced the name Josaphat to the Bodhisattva in the Lalitavistara. The Egyptians are said to have named JOSEPH " PETI-SET". All this confusion seems to derive from an imaginary East/ West divide. History is a work in progress. Thnxs again for the great presentation!

This does seem to ignore that Assyria did in fact still carry out military campaigns against surrounding nations during the "jonah effect" which is not something you would expect were the jonah story real. It may not have been quite as ferocious, but that can easily be explained by ineffectual leadership and power struggles within the empire.
+Lee Lemon It is generally accepted among Assyriologists that the difference was fairly dramatic over the time frame in question. Granted it is an argument from silence, but the historical evidence is certainly interesting. Thanks for your input.
+Bruce Gore I don't disagree that it was a dramatic change, but dramatic changes occurring after leadership change is hardly uncommon, and they certainly weren't peaceful considering they were still involved in wars with Urartu and Damascus along with defences against Armenian invasion during this period even after the alleged time of Jonah. This seems to be more just ineffective leadership rather than a sudden societal change.
