I liked the first one but the second sounded most like frusciante. I liked the clarity from the compressor on the first but did like the nasally tone on the second from the amp. Thank your for demonstrating and bringing the clarity to this. I’ve been having trouble with ds2 on full blast being waaayy too loud (as well as wh10 v3) so hopefully this helps. Thanks again Dave! You are the man
Nice work Dave. I know the hours of practice goes into that.....jeeze do i..! Keeping the listener engaged for a long solo is an art in itself. And it did that ...
Wow, very informative. After watching How to play like John 1.5, a compressor was the first "fix/workaround" i thought of. I search your channel, and BOOM, there it is! You sir are truly amazing and I love all your content. Also, great new series with Andertons as well! I liked #3 setup the most, flat out wicked tone.
Definitely prefer performance 2 or 3. The dynamic range of the first performance was mega squashed - great if you're playing on a Nashville backing track, but not great in this context of exciting guitars as a key component of the performance. Of course the "squishiness" can be controlled in most compressors, but with this type of music it's exciting to get blasted in the face at various times throughout the performance. Compressors definitely solve a specific problem, but I think you successfully demonstrated that they're not the only solution, and not always the best solution. Taking the time to learn and work with your existing gear is, I think, the best way to solve these problems, rather than adding additional gear hoping for a magic bullet. I think you clearly demonstrated that, and thanks for all your videos. I really enjoy watching and learning from them.
The first chain sounded the best to me. It sounded more "together". (Not really sure how to explain that term. LOL) Maybe a frequency thing. The other sounds were fine. But, the first was, by far, my favorite of the three.
sorry to be so offtopic but does any of you know a method to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost my login password. I would love any assistance you can offer me.
Pretty epic intro, ngl. Kinda want to get myself a golden plexi, seen some reviews about the build quality being a bit off, but i think for the price it seems a steal.
I actually think the first sounds best. That beaing said, I'm a sucker for that comptone when it comes to frusciante. But thats just me🤩 still love your music and digg the hell out of your tone// peace
Hi Dave, I’ve simply fallen out of love with the guitar and I’m now taking influence from global traditional musics and electronic music. Hopefully I’ll return but as for now, auf wiedersehen 👋
Liked them all to be honest, different certainly, have to get the golden plexi, was already on my wishlist and the pedal I don't have to do the experiment myself. Like to"feel" the difference 😊
First demo was very nice but overall I preferred Demo #2. I found it fuller and preferred it’s final distorted sound more to my liking. Didn’t like Demo#3 as it sounded a wee bit harsh on this device. Great job as always ,
I think a pedal is more accurate to get Frusciante's tone because his CE-1 helped to compress the signal for the WH10 and DS2 more so than the amps. He did that while also pushing his amps to the edge of breakup so I think if you use a tube amp on the clean channel, and push it as far as it can go before it starts to distort, and then throw a distortion pedal at very low gain on top of that, you'd get really close to how Frusciante does it.
Hey hey, there's nothing to say than awesome! Clear explanation. I'm wondering what would sound be? If treble booster or tube screamer sound on Vox ac30. Thanks
I'm somewhat confused now. I thought the DS2 and WH10 need to feed into a dirty channel?! Help Dave! I have volume issues when I switch on my WF10... I'll look into these solutions.
i dont think it needs a dirty channel specifically but a dirty signal which u can get with a clean channel by the turning the gain up on it but i think its better to use a dirty channel like an od1 on a marshall amp (hope this is correct and not lies hmm)
Well informative video and great playing Dave. How about that merchandise stuffs btw? I've never bought any merch thing of my other fav bands etc. before but i'd buy yours, all the way from Turkey here, without considering a second.
Hey there, Dave! Love your vids. Can you give me any advice on how to set up my Vox AC30C2? I dialed in the dirty clean tone at the amp utilizing the top boost channel and I got extremely close. Nice mids with a bit of dirt. Problem: I turn on my maxed out DS-2 and strike a note and the volume sort of swells up as the note sustains. I have to pull the level back on the DS-2 to about 9 o'clock for it to sound remotely close to normal. Do you have any advice? I'd like to use my amp instead of pedals because the AC30 is not terribly different from the Marshalls in the sense that they're mid heavy amps.
It depends really. A studio compressor will do a much better job than a guitar compressor pedal. I use a bass limiter in my fx loop, which I think does better than most guitar compressors because it's easier to set up to not just increase sustain, which most guitar compressors do. In fact the most effective pedal I have to tame loud pedals in front of it is a cheap EP Booster clone that I found on Ebay years ago and have not seen since. It's an inferior copy with much less headroom than the original and less boost, but it compresses like an amp and can even create fuzz with a loud boost going into it. As far as affordable compressor pedals go, the Mooer Yellow Comp does this kind of job better than others like a dynacomp/Boss etc. because it doesn't sound squishy.
@@LongAct94 Yeah I love mine. It works great at the beginning or the end of the chain IMO. It's currently on my smaller mini board first in the chain, acting as a tone sweetener for my Quilter Micro Block 45. It just adds the right amount of top and clarity to that amp.
@@LongAct94 Not sure. I do have a Mooer Ultra Drive, which is similar I guess, but I find that it generally seems to add loads of sustain when distortion is put into it but reduces the actual distortion effect. I suppose it works for certain things and not for others. If you have an FX loop I think it's worth trying out a compressor in that or better still (like I do) a limiter.
Iv just ventured into the world of pedals and got the wh10 and ds2. Im a big rhcp fan and thought I'd be able to get dani california sounding sweet but I have to have the tone dull otherwise I'm getting massive volume jumps with the wah. I can get it somewhere inbetween that I can live with for the verses but then it jumps big time again on the outro part of the solo. Iv tried both pedals on every kind of setting. Iv not got a very bad amp but its not great either just has a few voice settings and effects nothing to the standard you have is this the problem. If it is ill have to listen to the guitar master track and just cry whilst I save up.
Hey man can you make a video about recording your usual setup using the Katana Line Out? I am struggling getting the same tone that I have with the speakers. For example the brown mode with gain off sounds more distorted in the line out.
Hey Dave, thank you for this video. I think I heard you say in another video that this guitar is an Ibanez Strat. Would it be an Ibanez Blazer then? I just got an 1982 Blazer a couple months ago and it plays fantastic! The only thing I'm trying to find is an original Ibanez middle pickup, since it was replaced. But it has soooooo much more output than Neck and Bridge. I looked all over the Net, but to no avail to find any. Was wondering if you had any experience with Ibanez pickups and where to find them? Cheers, Daniel.
man need your help, really love frusciante and love his vintage sounds, and im looking for the Castles made of sand (rhcp version) solo sound or the Niandras lades crunchy, fuzzy, overdriven guitar tone (lofi) and then i fell in love with the New Rose from the Damned guitar tone, do you know how to get it?
One was best to me more clarity in the distortion, second sound I likes the clean the distortion got lost in translation same with sound three distortion was to much
Dave, do you think it's possible to set the compression and attack settings on a compressor to match the compression of an amp or the golden plexi? I agree the golden plexi sounded best. But the amp compression was the worst. I've always been a fan of compressors because it's possible to rein in furious chording on a guitar in a live context so it doesn't totally overwhelm the midrange and leave no space for vocals. Thoughts?
A couple more things. I think you meant to type "0" in the amp settings for Brown mode. Also the compressor example sounded the most controlled and together, but from experience I'd say that would get lost in a band mix, especially if there was another guitar. Example 2 would work best live IMO - less is more.
I really had to laugh today I was in a guitar shop and was testing out a Marshall dsl head and a Orange cr120 and the orange blew away the Marshall it sounded much better for half the price
Hey man, as far as I know, Dave likes the Vox silver top wah the best, after the Ibanez Wh10, which is hard to find because it isn't produced anymore I'm pretty sure. :)
Hi Dave, i know that it s probably a stupid question but i noticed that cr120h sometime has "crush pro 120" written on the panel and sometime there is "cr120". Do you know if there is a difference between the two? thanks!!
Keep coming back to here every year is a tradition. One of the best solos of all time.
i came back to this to hear the big differences.. using a distortion/overdrive pedal makes the sound dirtier, a more la cigale feel and i love it.
man you're truly inspiring, what a crazy solo you managed at the beginning of the vid
I liked the first one but the second sounded most like frusciante.
I liked the clarity from the compressor on the first but did like the nasally tone on the second from the amp.

I actually have my DS2 and my Wah pedal tamed by a compressor pedal (Behringer CS400/Boss CS3),Level,Tone, Sustain and Attack at twelve o'clock
But does it affect the sound?
Paired with a Treble Booster patch from my VOX Stomplab it gives me *the* Froosh tone
