- As if camping at Cumberland Island isn't more challenging than average, camping at the Stafford Beach campground with two young kids (10 and 5) is a whole 'nother level. The only way to get to Cumberland Island National Seashore is by ferry. Once you get to the island, if you're camping at Stafford Beach, you have to hike over 3.5 miles to your campsite. At Stafford Beach, there is no electricity, water must be treated, and you have to carry all of your supplies on your back (no carts). The one luxury is that there is a restroom with a cold shower. The biggest challenge, of course, is figuring out how to pack meals that are light but filling and nutritious. However, once you've overcome all of that, you are treated to miles and miles of unspoiled beaches, tropical maritime forests, all types of wild animals and birds, and a sense of accomplishment!
Even though it rained over half the time we were on the island, it was still a ton of fun! There are endless hiking opportunities, where you can see various island environments, old mansions (either in ruins or intact), horses, manatees, probably dolphins (we didn't see any), birds galore, etc. Or, you could just totally escape from the rest of the world and sit on a beach, where you might be the only person for miles around. Cumberland Island can be whatever you want it to be (except PCB or Myrtle Beach; it can't be that).
