Visiting Changbaishan in China on the Border of North Korea (Pt. 1, Paektusan, North Peak)

  • A couple of weeks ago I went to China to visit Changbaishan in China on the North Korean border. In Korean, this mountain is called 'Paektusan' and is sacred across the Korean Peninsula (in both North and South Korea).
    - VISITING
Changbaishan is the name of an airport, a train station, a mountain range, a township, a city, and a mountain range park. So, visiting can be a little tricky trying to navigate all the information.
To get to the mountain range park, you will need tickets (see below). The rest of the place, you don't need any special ticket. You can visit the different slopes - but the North is the most popular and easiest to navigate.
I visited off-peak, but this place turns into an absolute winter wonderland during the peak of winter, and it's a great place for skiing, too. And very cheap. If you can, go during this time - but be aware that the amount of tourists per day is limited so you will need to book tickets in advance to get into the Changbaishan park area.
Give yourself all day for each slope. There's a lot going on and you can make the most of your trip. 3 days 2 nights is perfect to get the most out of your stay, but you could easily stay longer.
    - TAXIS
Be prepared to use taxis to get around as public transport isn't great, but taxis in China are VERY affordable. Note - due to the small nature of the city you may have to get your hotel to call a taxi for you as some apps might not find any.
    - STAY
I stayed in Erdaobaihe which is convenient for the North Peak, located just a 10 minute taxi journey away from the park entrance. You can also consider staying in Wanda for skiing.
    - TICKETS & BOOKINGS
I'd really recommend using Trip.com for ANY hotel and bookings in China. (not sponsored but you won't find much on the normal apps)
Tickets - you can buy tickets from the official website (link below) but it is all in Chinese AND I think only accepts WeChat or Alipay payments. You can also book through the official WeChat account (again you need WeChat or Alipay payment). You have to fill in your real passport details etc at the time of booking.
    cbs.jl.gov.cn/zbsly/lyfw/lyts/...
You do NOT need to book in advance for off-peak times. There was hardly anyone there when I went - but also I wouldn't recommend risking it. Book in advance if you can, or ask a Chinee friend to help you.
In part 2, I'll visit the West Peak and some other places, too!

Honestly it's VERY cheap. The train from beijing is about the same as the flight cost (but you save on accommodation for the night since it's an overnight train). It's around $60 USD return. Nice hotels there are $20, I paid $10 per night. Still had nice big private room with bathroom and window. To get into the park it's around $10 usd. On my next vdeo next week I go on a private tour with a private driver & park entrance, that's about $70 usd total. So honestly, a pretty damn cheap holiday. Food is around $10 for a really great meal! It's very cheap in Changbaishan area compared to Beijing.

At 17:47 there is a black Korean hat mounted on the wall. Have you seen people wearing them? I've seen it only in museums and black-and-white photos.

I didn't even notice that! Yes, it's traditional Korean - no one wears it today apart from maybe some special event.

Lovely views in the border of North Korea (DPRK) amidst the current situations growing worse and possibility of WWIII could happen, especially the tensions amongst Korean Peninsulas recently like Putin's Visit to NK. And tbh, I am genuinely still waiting for Zoe to visit DPRK and see a new Songhwa Street in Pyongyang with newly built 80-storey skyscrapers and get a full lift ride to the top floor to oversee the city above.
Speaking about North Korea, the ups and downs about social media is imminent, especially the propaganda vloggers like Song A and Yumi (with fake name Sally and Olivia) (with possibility of other vloggers with fake names like Alex and few others). You'll be easily figure it out at next video about internet concerns and rising trend of new NK Pop song went viral like Friendly Father recently and last-year's upgrading trend of North Korea Pop into look-like BTS & Blackpink styled concert with nationalistic looking like In This Sky On This Land by Jang Hang Ran kind of singer. You should explained it!

honestly it was pretty warm here and there's not much to do, so I walked around and tried to kill time but still I only spent about 30 mins at the peak. Further down in the other areas, it's sheltered so much warmer but when I went to the west peak (part 2 next week!) I nearly lost my fingers...

Did the Chinese you met say there is a Loch-Ness Monster in Heaven Lake? I've read that Chinese believe this, but Koreans do not.
