My great grandfather and my grandfather worked for the Nickle Plate Railroad. There was a roundhouse in Conneaut Ohio where they worked. There's a small museum with a Berkshire steam engine on display near where the roundhouse was .
@@jimhines4889 I do somewhat frequent ltl deliveries to BNSF at Newton Ks. rite where the roundhouse used to be. The turntable is still there, but the roundhouse is long gone, but I know the history of the place and don't hafta worry about being accused of trespass. One of the benefits of being g an Ltl trucker.
I work for NS out of Bellevue. I run from Bellevue to Conneaut when I can. In fact, I ran the last freight across the old bridge in Painesville about 10 minutes before they took it out of service to replace it with the new one.
0:24: I believe the song you are trying to refer to is "The Wabash Cannonball"; "The Great Rock Island Route" is a song about the ROCK ISLAND railroad, a competitor.
I would love more videos like this! Companies and logistics are still a apart of history. And by the way, I'd love to see you do one on the Delaware Lakawana & Western RR, the Road of Anthracite. =)
My grandfather was a train engineer on the Wabash, fun guy deaf as a doorpost a few generations of us grew up in Decatur before spreading out (im 45 and its been 10 years since I went up there, if the place wasn't depressing enough as an adult, we only went up there for funerals
Ryan, the new building that took the place of the old Wabash terminal is not a monstrosity, its designed to be efficent--- no more / no less. The original building had timeless style and class.
Bro, as a journeyman carpenter who'd worked both streets, Wabash and Sangamon, it'd be very fun to have a beer with you. I remember distictly those historic buildings. One was an old firehouse, the other, one of the first model T and other american car tuner ships ever made. We spent 2 weeks laying plastic to protect the floor from steel framing scratches. Now its an office for a tech startup.
Tesla and George Westinghouse helped create Duquesne Light and Pittsburgh Railways as Mr. Ramsey helped Pittsburgh Wabash Terminal Railroad be built into downtown Pittsburg now Pittsburgh as to help PRR not know the line was being built by the Gould's. Along Mansfield just off PA 50 off PA 60 on Mansfield Avenue south of Greentree Road there appears to be a trolley yard on right side that was helped to sneak the Pittsburgh Wabash Terminal RR into Pittsburgh to keep PRR management from knowing the line was Gould's. In that area there were 3 tunnels under the Greentree area along Mansfield Avenue, Greentree Road and Parkway West.
This is really cool history of this railroad and thank you for sharing this video Ryan, I appreciate it and I love steam locomotives and older model diesel locomotives because they have great body style to them. My friend and I do model railroading and we do not have a layout yet because of the coast of lumber and hardware, but we are getting stuff as we go. I work on four different sizes of model trains, 0 scale and 0 27 scale and HO scale and the 4th size not so much and that is N scale. I do not have a job working at a train shop at all, but that is ok because my job I have is ok with me. I am sorry if I have gotten off track here, but I love the railroading videos that you share on here with all of the history of the different types of railroads and thank very much for sharing this video and merry Christmas to you and your family.
The Wabash had running rights in Ontario🇨🇦on GTWR/CNR(Airline&CASO) trackage until the end. Utilized CN engine shops in Windsor and ran several Canadian built locomotives(GMD).
I think you should have gone deeper into the role of the Wabash as part of the Gould Transcontinental System, however perhaps that deserves its own episode.
Pittsburg now Pittsburgh & Wabash Railroad here in Pittsburgh PA was able to access the Pittsburgh West Belt RR, Pittsburgh & West Virginia RR, Pittsburgh & Southern RR, Little Saw Mill Railroad lines with a wye along U.S. 19/ PA 51 between the BP Station just south of the West End Bridge as the wye is along Woodruff Street as the Pittsburgh Wabash RR entered its Pittsburgh & Wabash Tunnel to have the line lead onto its bridge over the Monongahela River going over the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad on Southside and going over the B&O RR to be alongside Ferry Street now Stanwix Street where the Station was at what is now Gateway #4 building.

Great documentary. Norfolk Southern in an homage to its heritage has a locomotive decorated in Wabash Railroad 50's passenger livery colors.

My g-grather was also on the Nickleplate also.
Nice and at least the legacy is still lived on by Nickel Plate Road 765 one of the most popular steam locomotives in excursion service

@brucealanwilson4121 my grandfathers, father and uncle all worked on the Nickel-plated as well.
I've lived in Pittsburgh my whole life and grew up playing in an old abandoned tunnel called the wabash tunnel that was apart of this line
Wabash rr never went to Pittsburgh
You're thinking of the Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal railway
I live in Decatur, Illinois. A lot of the Wabash Railroad still exists today from a giant rail yard, to a coaling tower to the large Wabash Depot.
I did not realize there was a coaling tower still there. Thanks for that! Will have to make a trip one of these days.
I usually watch for a history lesson. Today I watch for history training.
The Wabash, and NKP, were both prime properties, thats why N&W was in such a hurry to aquire them both, before anybody else could.
I would love to see a video on the Southern railway next, such a case study of it's innovations throughout history.
I’m in wabash IN for Christmas. Never knew
If you havent already, I would love to see a ITS RAILROAD HISTORY.
This is somewhat personal for me. The backyard of my grandmother's house in Chapin, IL. bordered the Wabash track.
Hear the mighty rush of the engine
Hear that lonesome hobo squall
You're travlin' through the jungles
On the Wabash Cannonball...
If you like beautiful architecture check out Wabash, Indiana. It’s a gem for Midwestern gilded age buildings.
Such an interesting piece of history! The Wabash Railroad truly shaped transportation in America and left a lasting legacy despite its challenges.
0:24: I believe the song you are trying to refer to is "The Wabash Cannonball"; "The Great Rock Island Route" is a song about the ROCK ISLAND railroad, a competitor.
Great story. Thanks for sharing!

You might want to fix the title card spelling...
What about a story on the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton, purchased by Henry Ford? Loved the Wabash story.
Oooh! The DT&I would make a good video
Good looking passenger trains. Focused on their regional roots.

6:26 The Wabash is my favorite historic railroad because it was largely financed by St Louis industrialists. ⚜️
6:43 also shoutout to the Wainwright building, oldest skyscraper in the world in that snap of downtown StL 😊
Good times! They never come back!
Maybe you could do a segment on the rise and fall of the Elgin Watch factory .

Nice job young man.
@IT"S HISTORY I find it amazing that you always find a story that interests me.
Thanks for doing such a great job.
Road on it many time in my youth. Tracks are just 32 miles south of me.
The Wabash Cannonball!!

Now all part of the Norfolk
Southern
The Wabash isn't gone. It's a part of Norfolk Southern now.
And today, the Wabash Tunnel runs under Mt. Washington as an alternate to the Liberty tunnels during rush hour.
I think you should have gone deeper into the role of the Wabash as part of the Gould Transcontinental System, however perhaps that deserves its own episode.
is it the Wabsh or the Wabash?

🎼🎶There's a gal from Tennessee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, she's long and she's tall... she came down to Birmingham on the Wabash Cannonball....
What's a WABSH?
The Waubash is a river in Indiana.
👍
Wabash sounds like part of a trio of tv clowns: Wabash, Zoink and Boomshakalaka.
With so many bankruptcies, shouldn't it be called the, "Wash-my-Balls"?

No one is perfect.
Why hire a proofreader when you just did the task for free?
I'm just glad they didn't put an L in it 😂
I enjoy your content but please dress for success.
