Easiest way to remove an oil filter if you can't wrench it off, use your belt. If you have enough room to slip a belt over the filter, you can break it loose without crushing it. Was a handy trick I picked up in the army.
@ Irving ... Rotella is used in diesel engines... But I have been using it in other motorcycles and gas engine cars without issue... If you google search the use of this oil it has some positive reviews from people a lot smarter than me..
Torque wrench man, fuck. You are going to strip out your drain plug. Look up the price for new engine cases and you might want to consider buying one and using a service manual.
I just bought one, and my oil light comes on and off like 3 times, sometimes, while Im riding, and like mile away it would come on, I called the dealer and they told me he talked to his mechanic and said u have to thread it in to check oil level, idk whos right. Cuz oils barley on there doin this, but threaded shows full
Owners manual recommends 10w-30 to 20w-50.... depending on the temperature of the environment you ride in... lighter oil for cooler environment and heavier in hotter environment
new to bikes. got a bolt a few months ago looking to give it an oil change of my own. why let it warm up? to much and the oil will no doubt burn your hand right? - newb
Ryan Ramirez Start the bike and let it run for like 5 seconds . thats enough time to get oil up in the engine and it wont be hot . The reason you dont want to change oil and add new filter after letting bike sit is because it will then have to go through the new filter and up through the system ( takes longer ) ......so some oil already on the piston walls from warm up is a good idea
Don't listen to that guy, he has no idea what he is talking about. You need to get the bike up to operating temperature. Go for a good long ride, then let it idle for a few minutes, then drop the oil. You get more contaminates out of the engine by having it hot, and less residue. Use an extension to get remove the drain bolt, so you don't burn yourself. Once the engine has completely drained, you can remove the oil filter.
100 miles ? you jumped the gun by a long ways and oil coming off of filter was like brand new as it should have been with that many miles and then black in tub ? I dont agree changing oil that soon in fact back in the day most car dealers would tell you 3000 miles . If the oil is not dirty on the stick then leave it . Highway miles and city miles are totally different on oil contamination . in fact most dealers now raise the limit from 7 to 10 grand because of cleaner running cars ....case in point ( vehicle runs clean then oil stays clean ) I do the same for my bikes except break in which will be around 400 plus or minus miles and you can bet the oil is still in great shape even then and could probably get away with just a filter change and top off the oil ..........another case in point , just because the money makers tell you something is needed on your vehicles does not necessarily mean they are telling you the truth . How they get rich
Mike Callies I changed mine at 150, 500, and 1000. Changing it early and frequently ensures any metal shavings get out of the motor asap. Just personal opinion, whatever floats your boat. I don't mind spending money to ensure my car/motorcycle is always got good oil running through her.
To each his own moto. Your new motor isn't going to be shaving off so much steel that it will clog your filter . 400 miles , drop the filter not the oil because oil is clean and already filtered . 1000 Miles or so drop the cheap non detergent oil and filter and replace with new filter and full synthetic oil . Yamaha bolts are air cooled so you want a good oil after break in .
Cheef Cherokee Cheef , Ill tell you exactly what oil is the best . Ive Got a 2015 bolt r spec and i put in the the recommended 15w40 or 20 w 50 full synthetic . oil light came on a few days later on the way home from work , cold morning . stopped the bike , checked everything , all good so i started it back up and made it home . All i could figure is the fact that it was cold out and 15 w 40 or 20 w 50 is a thicker oil , synthetic or not , and it wasnt pumping through the system . Mobil has a full synthetic 0w40 which is the best and widest range available ......0 for cold starts and 40 for high temp range . Put that in and not a problem since . In fact i started running that in all my cars and other bikes , especially in the winter
And one more thing cheef , bolts are air cooled so if your sitting at a stop light and its hotter than hell out , hit the off switch and let it sit till u see green . i leave mine in gear on the hills so i dont have to hold any brakes . cylinders are coated on these but still , they will get hot just sitting

damn fine idea, I'll be replacing with a K&N bolt head filter and was looking for options on getting the OEM off, will try!!
@ Brian.. If you read the owners manual... On page 7-11.. It states not to thread the dipstick when checking oil level... Hope that helps..
Personally I'd never use Rotella shell 15w40.
Stick with Yamaha brand.
I'm getting 2016 Bolt and happy to see there's a dip stick. My 2007 Yamaha 1100cc Custom just had the little window to check.
Yeah as does my Yamaha xt250, this is nice to have a dipstick. also got a 2016. hope you are enjoying yours!

Video really helped me out thanks.
As a musician from Liverpool, it pleases me that you had The Beatles on!
@Ryan.. Warming up the engine lets the oil come out easier..
Great tutorial bro. Nice bike, I have the same Matte gray R-Spec. Safe riding!
@Juven... Using MototuneUSA way of breaking-in motor.
Outstanding thanks
Did you get any oil in the catch pan?
LMAO! I thought the same thing!
lol I've made a few messes before but this was painful to watch :)
good job sir ji
@Jon....the oil lite only comes on at start up....then disappears....
Holy sh*t Batman...you made a mess! Nice video though, great job.
what's the thing under your engine with the yellow and green lights ?
Torque wrench man, fuck. You are going to strip out your drain plug. Look up the price for new engine cases and you might want to consider buying one and using a service manual.
@MLT BOLT RIDER... Not sure what your referencing.. But I don't have anything special under the engine..
jrsandiego you can see it at 1:58 in the background ..looks like where the gas overflow hose is supposed to be

I thought Rotella was diesel oil? Wouldn't that mess with your clutch?
Better get a jack.. even this girl has one.
+Bee Bee Schipisch (Weather Girl) Im not buying the jack thing Be Be , confirmation will be needed .
that's your damn problem away... just making it easier to check the oil level..
I guess you have something wrong with women bikers.
No not at all . Was just a bad joke that i guess only i got .
WOW!! Only 100 miles and the oil is that black.
Y an oil change after 100 miles..?
"aaaaah" X 2000 lol good video
Is that the oil wieght recommend

When you did your oil change would your oil light come on at all?
+jon mendez Everyone should know that the oil light comes on after changing it.. It only stays on for a second or 2 longer..
California?
Yes
Great video dude.
