Here's a little explanation from me.
The Portuguese started their invasion of Indonesia in 1511 and ruled until around 1602. The Dutch showed up in 1602 through the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC), which was a Dutch trading company. They held power until the VOC went bankrupt and was shut down by the Dutch government in 1799. After that, the Dutch government took control, calling it the Dutch East Indies, which is what Indonesia was known as back then.
Later, Japan occupied Indonesia from 1942 until they surrendered in 1945. After World War II, the Dutch, with the help of British troops, came back in 1946 to regain control of Indonesia mainly for its spices to fund the war. This led to the Indonesian National Revolution, which lasted until 1949 and was a time of intense and bloody conflict, featuring two major military aggressions by the Dutch. The struggle finally ended with Indonesia being recognized as a sovereign nation on December 27, 1949. Until now, the Dutch have been periodically returning historical items from Indonesia, like gold objects such as statues, royal kris daggers, swords, ancient jewelry, and many more. This year, they returned 400 valuable items to Indonesia.
