- In this episode I read you a favourite passage from The Voyage of the Dawntreader
If you like you can encourage me with coffee and cake (or something stronger) here:

Feels like catching up with an old mentor and friend. Wisdom like his is fading from this world day by day...
Perhaps not Johan. You are his student.
I see a lot of people comment on videos like Malcolm's such hopeless and resigned things as "there is little wisdom like this left!" or "people like this are growing fewer and fewer every day," and I just want to say, have hope! There are still good people in the world, and you can find them. But you must search, search for the wisdom around you. One day, having taken the path you are likely to take from the place you are likely to come from, you may find that new students seek out your wisdom.
Beautiful advice and true.
I couldn’t agree more!
I'm currently on the last night of a business trip before heading back to the UK,, frazzled, tired and alone in Rome. I suffer from depression and anxiety and so wanted to thank you for creating a safe, familiar and welcoming space that people can visit any time and from afar. Your videos always help and bring a smile to my face.
I also now occasionally smoke a pipe (probably partly due to your videos) and made sure I bought one of mine with me - an old Peterson System Smooth 317 that I restored and a tin of Peterson's Early Morning Pipe :)
I have no idea what book you are reading but do know the Coleridge poem. My Peterson pipe, a gift of my dad, got stolen off a study desk in 1967. CS Lewis? Narnia?
Have a wonderful rest over Christmas and a Happy time.
Voyage of the Dawn Treader
“Looked along the shaft of light”- meaningless to me as a child, but as an adult who has read Lewis’s essay on the concept, this unexpected phrase in the passage was the cherry on top of this greatest of eucatastrophes.
Oh, how I have longed for more Lewis! How could one man be blessed with so many gifts, and then use them so well? Not only was his far famed imagination rich with the fragrance of paradise, but he was not fanciful nor devoid of intellect. He could think as carefully, critically and logically as any analytic philosopher, and yet could present his ideas with the clarity and humility befitting true intelligence. Not dry were his thoughts, (as most modernism was) but nor were they mere mysticism. His writing was as balanced as the old theory of four humours; cool logic balanced with warm feeling; solid, dry ground of fact and good morals, combined with the living moisture of imagination. I long to be able to express myself as he did. Oh let's have more Lewis. Oh do let's!
I work at home in a small room as a writer and rarely see people so your videos enable me to escape my den and enter into a neighbour's house (your house) and they (you) are chatting with me. Uplifts the spirit. Thank you so much for 'inviting me over'! Keep 'em coming!
thanks, that's just the spirit in which I hope these videos are enjoyed
Christmas and Advent in general are a wonderful image of that light that waits for us and spawns at the darkest moments. It's not a coincidence that the winter solstice aligns with Christmas. Its an inflection point in the year as well as in history.
Lucy is a large part of the reason my own faith was able to find the good earth in which to grow. Pleasant voyage to America to you.
A beautiful pipe Malcolm.
Sláinte Mhath!! 🥃
Grew up on the Narnia books; Read "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner" for class last semester but never contacted it to Lewis. Love your content. Keep it up!
Thank you for bringing back the beauty of this passage. I was inspired by it dozens of times in my youth, but in the few times I've read it as a adult I was impatient and distracted by the fairly obvious plot and message. Your reading has brought back to me why I found the plot and message to be obvious: it is stated so well here that it became axiomatic.
Your visits are a welcome respite and consequent refocus on what is truly valuable.
Beautiful analogy of those dark days of the mind.
Thanks for inviting me into your reading room Malcolm, your banter is so enriching 😀
You're a busy fellow, so I'm doubly grateful that you take the time to share this episode from The Voyage of the DT with us. Thank you, I really enjoyed our time together.
For whatever reason, the algorithm actually fell into place.
Thank you for being you, Sir.
Ive just had your channel suddenly appear in my list of suggestions and im very glad it did as this is very relaxing and nostalgic. I will share this also. Thank you.
😊❤
Thank you so very much! This episode came so very timely in my life. To be reminded of that divine whisper in the middle of the deepest darkness is such a sign of grace and love from God. I thank God for people like you, Sir! Please continue putting out these invaluable videos and your poetry, of course. Slainte!
Always enjoyable watching and listening to you. Cheers 🥃
One of the hardest lessons to learn. God will always come through for us in any storm, we just need to have enough faith to wait for his perfect timing. Remember when Jesus calmed the storm when the deciples were with him on the boat. Mark 4 35-41
Excellent! Thank you sir, and God bless!
This is my new favorite channel and I'm only sorry I didn't discover it back when you started. But what a delightful binge.
Thanks Malcolm,
There's a reason why great literature endures....... just like Peterson pipes 😊
Fab Malcolm.Belfasr loves u as well.Happy Christmas.
I really enjoy these brief readings from books I have never read, I have started reading the chronicles of Narnia and I am so happy I am reading them.
Thank you so much for your wonderful videos.
Just love these type of stores that give hope!!
Beautiful and so encouraging 💖
Great as always, thank you
I just got chills. thank you.
"The man hath penance done, and penance more will do."
I have to say, that is a very touching passage you have read and I would like to thank you for sharing this, I would love to hear more passages or readings 😃
What a delightful impression to see you in Peterson's last Tuesday.
Where coincidentally I bought my first pipe a Spiget system.
Love the video lighting a bowl with you 😊
Your spells in the library, and no doubt your Arthurian story, are for us, as Wislawa Szymborska said of poetry itself, "a redemptive handrail" as we listen for the whisper of Aslan.
I am grieving the loss of a relationship today, but the friendship and love remains and it ended amicably. Right now I don't know what to do with myself or what my future holds.
Good video
Very enjoyable. I am curious about your thoughts on George MacDonald Fraser's "Flashman Papers"
I dont know them
Esteemed Father Guite : Could it be that Lewis was making reference to the ancient christian symbol of the pelican as a symbol of christ?
Your viewer and brother in christ: Joshua Valencia
Ps: I would love to hear some experts from the Lord of the Rings ( and your take on them). As a catholic pipe smoker I tend to prefer it. However C.S Lewis is a must for all christian readers and pipe smokers most especially his theological writings.
May the peace and blessings of our Lord be with you and aid you in your good work.
Hi Malcolm, Thank you for your video. Have you watched any of the chosen?
Not yet!
My six year old watches videos with me and she insists I comment "Hello" and tell you she loves the way you read!
tell her hello from me!
@@MalcolmGuitespell I sure will! Thank you
Where in America are you headed, my friend?
What was the name of the whisky you was drinking in this clip Malcom?
I’ll try it tomorrow 😎👍
Connemara I think
I have a hard time telling any difference in your library and two houses?
I have read plenty of C S Lewis non-fiction but, apart from the Screwtape Letters, no fiction. Where is the best place to start please?
Begin the Narnia series with the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, these books can be read by adults as much as by children
Just who is the fellow who comes into your study?
His wife
Aslan is not a tame lion you know.
