Vibe Check! Allow the mind to have the thought, "am I in a safe and neutral enough place to allow myself to just be?"
For me, if I allow myself to just experience seeing visually, I notice my attention moves to sound, then smell, then physical sensations, then taste, then to "witnessing thoughts", then to "feeling like a part of the environment, connected", and then finally, to the center of awareness itself "aware of experiencing awareness". This is called "The Wheel of Awareness" by Dr. Dan Siegel. The visual experience exercise is just a first step to it, and it gets incredibly interesting very quickly right after! That's because when someone is able to finally understand how to passively witness experiencing everything they are experiencing, it's very easy to apply to everything we experince in the present moment, including thoughts, emotions, connection, memories, feelings, senses, identity, perception/projections, and so on!
I say this, because if someone does happen to passively witness what they see visually, but get stuck thinking they are returning to thoughts, they actually aren't! They are simply witnessing another aspect of their experience in the present moment! Any and everything that can be witnessed by awareness, is fair, and a valid part of the overall experience of just being! Of course, this requires some mild awareness of being awareness witnessing the self creating thoughts, versus blending with and identifying with thoughts. I feel that is what people have a hard time with. This kind of meditative practice is truly an effort to not give effort!
This first sensory step really is the hardest of all, we are just not used to letting go of a process that comes so naturally, and neither should we! We just need to acknowledge that we are already awareness experiencing the full present moment, and everything within it that our being creates for us!

I’ve found that there’s not necessarily anything you can do, like meditation won’t cause realisation because they are one and the same - but starting practices like this somehow create a momentum that eventually leads to things apparently ‘opening up’.
Maybe it’s like - a momentum is started on its own, and seems to lead to eventual clear seeing. When I think back to my path, it seemed like I was working hard the whole time to make realisation happen, but the momentum was already there. Like a kid being driven by their parents in a car, in the back seat pretending they are flying a fighter jet.
But you have an amazing compassion and empathy for those on the path and I imagine you are speaking on a ‘level’ that can be heard. It’s all very trippy when you think about it too much lol…

Great stuff Angelo 👌🙌 it feels like a "leaning into" direct sensory awareness. It's good to practice immediacy - presence via seeing 👁️what's here visually in the field. Focus on seeing. Thought overlays are secondary imprints to the seeing. They both exist in the reality but the mind will wanderlust with thoughts, so it's good to create a discipline to pull that ox by its nose ring until it's obvious to you. Always come back to directly seeing what is literally in front of your face. It's the only real thing...

This is a huge first step for a big number of therapies, psychotherapies, healing practices, and so on! Yes, it is actually science based too!, meaning that this kind of practice is used widely in psychology for healing and treatments!

Would you say that the people who are saying “there’s nothing to do” are turning something that’s descriptively true, (especially in hindsight, so to speak), and mistakenly making it prescriptive? Like, once awakened, we see “there’s nothing to do, no where to go” and keep chopping wood etc, and we will know that what those people said was true in a sense, but to get to awakening we still have to remove the obstructions to it etc? Whatever the case, I appreciate you touching on it.

Hi Angelo, as with inquiry I ask myself 'what am I?' Then switch off and relax my mind. I don't search or expect an answer but I realise that my thoughts are all random and all over the place. Should I at least search for an answer? hold the question and look for an answer?
You've just suggested that I ask myself 'what do I actually see?'I expect my brain will just go off throwing up all sorts of unrelated thoughts and imagines. Should I at least ponder the question mentally for a little while or should I just drop the question and see what happens?

You have done a great first step to "open awareness", and "open mind"! Instead of "looking" for an answer, the answers will come forward as something discernible naturally through a very complex process known as "Spontaneous Synchronicity" (I think Vertassium did a RUclips video about this too). The noise of your thoughts, when left to passively observe them, will at some point, form clear intuition of a question you hold in open awareness. This is a deeply complex process, as a lot of intuition from the noise, will not come through and from the mind alone, intuition can come from your environment, senses, internal sensations, memories, somatic memories, happenstances, synchronicities, feelings, emotions, beliefs, projections, and so much more. If you're really curious, I suggest checking out the "SIBAM" model by Peter Levine.
Asking your intuition, "What am I?", is a difficult question for intuition to summarize and give you, which is why there seems to be so much noise! It's like asking a super intelligent computer what the meaning of life is! The super intelligent computer would know the answer, but the answer is just not going to be simple, and your intuition is going to go to hard work ACTUALLY trying to give you the answer, and in any and all forms of the SIBAM model!

How do I make the difference between the absence of thought and being so identified in thoughts that I'm not aware of them? I think I'm trying to orient myself to direct experience but I'm not sure if the apparent absence of thoughts is because my mind is calm or because I have thoughts that are so unconscious that I'm not aware of them. Don't know if that makes sense

    • @SimplyAlwaysAwake
      @SimplyAlwaysAwake  2 года назад +7

It takes some time to get your "sea legs" in this way. The thinking mind doesn't trust thoughtless consciousness (go figure), so it tosses you a thought that says, "Maybe this isn't actually non-thinking, but rather you're identified again." Do you see how sneaky thoughts are. Remaining in essentially thoughtless presence can be surprisingly simple, herein lies the challenge to the self that only knows how to struggle :)

As I child I had several experiences of non-duality, and have my entire life strived to maintain this awareness, with some degree of success. I have wondered for some time if everyone experiences them, but has been taught, or convince themselve, to ignore them. I cannot imagine someone doing so, as it is the most powerful experience one can imagine, literally life-altering, but on the other hand I cannot believe I am so much different than others. It sounds glib to say, but it is true that once you see something, you cannot unsee it, so how, once seeing, could someone push it away and instead choose to immerse themselves in the prevailing collective (un)conscious? Perhaps it is a choice for them? They have something to work on, and knowing too much might hinder the lesson? Sort of like playing a video game with 'god mode' enabled. Just a thought.

Hi Angelo, thank you for this video. I have a question: I noticed you give a variety of techniques or approaches to bring this unfiltered experience of reality in the foreground. I was wandering if you know something about the theory that there might be a "neurological fit" between people and techniques, in the sense that a particular technique may be effective only to a small percentage of people that try it because of how their brain is wired. This idea comes mostly from Dr. Jeffery A. Martin, who conducted a large study on awakened people, which some people say it's controvertial. Do you know him and his work? Do you think every technique will eventually work for anyone that tries it, or that maybe a particular technique won't ever work for someone because of how his brain is wired?

I got A question for you Angelo. I am playing with how the conceptual mind modifies experience. with seeing, i feel like it flattens the visual experience to 2D. when conceptual mind is resting its like the "me-ness" merges with the world in 3D. like forgetting time as a kid. So I been playing with sound/words also. It seems impossible for the conceptual mind to rest when words are heard. I remember when I was young I didnt know english and I was singing the song "Forever Young" in the shower. i remember how the sound, and unknown words felt as I heard them and sang them. but now it is impossible to hear the song in the same way. as pure sound sort of speak ( i dont see that part of conceptual mind as a "problem", it is the "me/not me" and the flattening effect of believing concepts that is releated to suffering.. but it is interesting when investigating how conceptual mind alters experience) also visual illusions, "rubber hand illusion" etc are interesting because i am thinking maybe they are at a deeper level of altering experience, than believing a concept.. sorry this got all over :) thanks for the video .. hers forever young :) ruclips.net/video/t1TcDHrkQYg/видео.html

It's important to realize that some people may have 10,20,30+ years of meditation experience, and not all are in the mind chatter phase, and not all live in a mindless state for most of a day, and not all are incapable of meditating on any object or even vision itself, without thought or interference. In fact, it may be very simple for many, but that's not enlightenment. Personally, I can do what you request here for as many hours as I have time, maybe 2 (then I need to stop, because I need to think, and plan, and make calls, etc). And being in a state of presence is not a great feat either. It's just the normal prevailing state of mind for many long term meditators.

Not sure exactly what you are getting at (suggesting I change type of content etc?) but I make do make videos for all levels of realization from beginner to deep stage realization. Many more toward the beginner end as vastly more people are working toward first awakening or are yet to have that shift than people who are realizing non-dual and no-self. Also length of meditation experience does not equal realization. I am not the only one who has observed this BTW, there are people with decades of meditation experience who have not had a first awakening.

@@SimplyAlwaysAwake yes, I agree to all you say. My point was that you are recommending standard practices that aren't great challenges to many, so being adept with your recommendations, alone, does not seem to be enough. There seems to be a 'grace factor' maybe, or a lack of intensity, or time, or a lack of continuity, or lack of integrity/quality, or some other dedication that makes the process faster for some than others. There is a sutta where the Buddha likens the problem to giving instructions to go from one village to another. Some get lost and some get to the destination (destination being another topic discussed elsewhere, along with how that equates to an end of rebirths).

Is there a struggle though, or just the appearance of what looks like a struggle? Who struggles?
      Paradox indeed...
      Everything exists now...

      What seeks attention?
Attention changes, what makes it change?

In the raw visual field, there is phenomena arising. Any attempt to conceptualize in the mind (thinking) what's seen 👁️... as a thing/item/object creates the distance, and ironically what is in direct seeing, being illuminated... is not seen... it's magic 😜

It's realy clear seen👁....but ,Angelo says work with it, make an effort and it's not right that there's nothing to do.... who or what makes the effort?
What changes attention, from thought to pure seeing👁

One simple approach is when hearing, see if you can find a dividing line between the apparent receiver of the sound and where it is “out there.” Like follow through the sound experience and see if there is any place it changes over

This is not non duality teaching, its duality made to sound non dual. Who is practicing??

    • @SimplyAlwaysAwake

You don't need to ask who is practicing. It will just perpetuate the watcher state and the dualistic construct will be overlooked. This is the pitfall of watching neo-advaita videos and taking them too literally :)
