    I also have this knife. I really like it, however I do agree it could loose some belly, and a taco style sheath. Over all its a keeper and a user. As far as first production run #s here is are the figures I got from ESEE.

    I'm more impressed with it than I expected. The advertisements with the white background don't really do it justice. I like the flat grind but it could loose a little belly for more point in the tip. It's gonna hold up and be a contender by years end I'm predicting

    I’ve carried this on my last two river rafting/fishing adventures and it’s an awesome small food prep slice and dice, need something sharp to get the small tasks done kind of blade. Is it a branch chopper and splitting maul? no. It also does pretty well with skinning and index finger operations after a harvest at elk camp as my hunting partners can attest.

    One of the things that controlled the price market on supersteels was scarcity. S45VN was hard to get. D2 was everywhere so tool steels became common and cheap. Magnacut is showing up in everything now. It's so common it's going to devalue collections of knives containing other supersteels. It's the Beanie Babie tipping point of super steels. Time to unload a collection if it was based on supersteels.

I have a Bradford Guardian 3.2 in magnacut and could not see spending on the Sencillio. Further more a neck knife I have the White River M1 Capo in S35VN which has the best Ergos ever. So here is hoping Esse makes the Izula 2 either stainless steel.

    I've had mine for a month now and I'd agree with some of what you've said about this knife. I haven't had any issues with feather sticking with mine but like you it still wouldn't be my first choice but for me it's more because of the size and ergos with its size. Ultimately it's a great EDC blade that is a wonderful around the camp blade but in the casual camping sense ie food prep/eating, cutting rope/paracord, basic EDC tasks etc. If you are more into bushcraft etc this isn't the knife for you as it just isn't built for that type of use! This is my first Magnacut blade and so far I'm pretty pleased with how easy it is to keep razor sharp! The sheath retention is great as mine doesn't wobble around like yours but I'd still prefer a leather sheath with a deep carry pocket clip over a belt clip kydex like the one that comes with it. I didn't think I'd like the grip design as much as I do given it sits great in the palm and the texture provides more than adequate grip. Overall it's a 10/10 for me as my EDC fixed blade I have better suited knives for bushcraft/camping etc but this one happily sits on my belt for daily tasks that those knives couldn't attend without drawing negative attention or legal issues!

    as much as I like Esee knives, and very much like smaller, EDC fixed blades for when I am not out in the woods, I don't think this one will be on my wish list this year. the very deep belly is something I like in a larger blade, but I like my smaller fixies to have a more narrow profile. I do not currently have anything in Magnacut but everything I have seen about it gives it pretty good marks for a durable stainless. the two knives in this size range that I tend to gravitate towards are the Tops scandi trekker, and the Esee Izula II. Thank you for this look at this blade, it has given me a lot of good information to weigh in on what knives to save towards. I am going to be looking into that Boker mini bronco.

  • @npenick66

    Been watching this blade for the last 6-8 weeks. It fills that niche right between the Izula and the Essee 3 for me. Carried the Izula 2 for a long time and occasionally it was too small for a daily task. The Esee 3 was a bit chunky for a daily for me. Found the Creely Mako in magnacut and love it for the main carry. This Sencillo looked like a nice backup to the Mako. Lucky for me everyplace is sold out of the magnacut or I'd have picked one up already. Eventually I know one will sneak into my rotation though. I know some people hate the magnacut craze but I've had very good luck with the steel.

      I wish ESSE would make a hybrid of the Izula II and the Sencillo. My dream knife would have the same handle and blade profile as the Iz II. But it would have the same blade thickness (1/8") and same blade steel (Magnacut) and slightly longer cutting edge as the Sencillo. I also like that the Iz II has a narrow, unsharpened ricasso between your forefinger and the cutting edge. With the Sencillo, your finger is right up against the sharpened blade. And, although the Iz II sheath isn't Kydex, it is a molded thermoplastic sheath that has excellent retention and no rattle.

  • @everydayinfoguy
    @everydayinfoguy 11 месяцев назад +4

    Ok...hopefully you see this. The lack of feather sticking is NOT due to the high flat grind. It's due to the steep secondary bevel. I've re-profiled many knives that have factory edges that didn't carve or feather stick worth a crap and ended up with cutters that work wonders. It normally doesn't take much of a change to make it just a bit steeper so it cuts into the wood easier. If you go too much, you'll have a weak edge. Manufacturers often want to make sure the edge "holds up" but end up making dull performers. ESEE is ok on the bevel but not great. I have several and had to work about 80 percent to make them much better bushcraft tools. The knife clearly needs the edge worked...like many edges out of the factory.

    G'day Aaron, noth'n particularly wrong with it, though I reckon a compact leather sheath would be more in keeping with the design and brown micarta, ... done well, it'd get rid of that rattle too.
    Probably better than most full flat folders, but in any case a little thin slicey fella is certainly not a secondary blade I'd be taking on the trail; just too limited in the wood processing department.
    yeah, I'm with ya mate, more of a camp kitchen/cordage cutter and maybe around the house or EDC.
    Like the look of that Boker as a small, camp utility, job. I don't remember you reviewing that one, coming soon ?

    Hmm, thought I commented on this video awhile back, must've been one of the "shorts". Anyway, my first impression of the knife wasn't that favorable, but since then my view has changed quite a bit. This knife is actually pretty capable and more comfortable than I expected it to be given the relatively small handle on it. I've done some hardwood carving that was extremely tough to get through, and this knife performed quite well....moreso with gloves on, but good either way. Hard pushcuts weren't really a problem, unlike my Bradford Guardian 4.5 in which I can get about 2 cuts before it become too painful to use (not sure why anyone would purposely design such a bad/thin handle on a supposed hard-use knife). Very good in the slicing/cutting department, and small/light enough to carry easily. At first I sorta regretted getting this knife, but after some time with it, am definitely glad I bought it (in A2).

    I have a first production run in Magnacut. I freaking love it. If you want less belly get the Izula 2. Your alternate knives are all great but all bigger than the Sencillo. And in my opinion, realistically too big for real world EDC. To me, the Sencillo already pushes the limit on that.

    So... for my Sencillo in Magnacut its been pretty nice as a work EDC. I'm not working with wood though so... there's that. The knife being super slicey like it is makes it a cardboard destroyer... even through multiple layers of thick cardboard.
    I haven't used it for food prep yet... but I could definitely see it working for that. The wide blade does help give some knuckle clearance for when you are working against a flat surface.
    All in all... the blade size, shape of the handle, and included clip make for a relatively compact and easy to carry package. Been very happy it was my first Magnacut fixie.

    I would suggest not using the edge right at the belly for feather sticking. It helps a ton to be closer to the back end, closest to the handle. Looked like you were sliding off when you hit the belly

    Esee 3hm does 90% of what this does and works very very well at a fraction of the price. Esee is s company that does great work with their training and schools. They also do amazing designs for their blades… but they’re not known for innovation. Their stuff is mostly based around the same patterns from their original designs. I’d like to see them do an updated RB3. Make it and RB4 and thicken up the handle….That’s what I want from Esee

    It’s not even really an ESEE knife… it’s made by White River and is a literal copy of a knife that they(White River) produced several years back.

    It looks like a nice small food prep/utility knife for backbackers. Definitely not a survival or bushcraft knife. It's probably intended as a small hunting/skinning knife. Either the Buck Alpha Pro or the Benchmade Hidden Canyon Hunter look to be far more functional. I'd like to see both of those in Magnacut. I'm fine with the pancake kydex sheath. Not a knife that interests me. Another useful review, thanks.

    I'd take the magnacut over the A2 all day long especially when they're thst close in price. For a compact EDC fix blade the flat grind looks perfect but a taco style sheeth would ne better. For a bushcraft knife you can typically get a way with carrying something bigger with a more suited blade grind like a saber or scandi.

    The low HRC and flat grind is the deal breaker. An outdoor knife has to be a saber grind. ESEE what where you thinking? Shame, should have been a 63+ HRC w/ a saber ground edge.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  2 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, for this type of knife, a high saber grind and I’m finding 62 to 64 is excellent for smaller knives and and 61 to 63 on larger Knives
