    As soon as Wes decided to go with a rail instead of pole pieces the gear nerds were ready to claim that the pickup was just a modded Dimebucker. Those people have clearly never played a Jupiter, or a Dimebucker.

    • @toddwilliamson2651
      @toddwilliamson2651 3 года назад +3

      Bill Lawrence invented the rails pickup designs in the 70's. The Dimebucker was made because Dimebag lost contact with Bill Lawrence when Bill lost the rights to Bill Lawrence USA. Bill Lawrence's original Twin Blades are still better than the Dimebucker and this pickup because Bill Lawrence pickups (Wylde Pickups) give a full spectrum tonal response instead of the sculpted tones you get from the boutique makers like DImarzio and Seymour Duncan and the less famous but more expensive 'boutique' winders. I strongly stronlgy suggest you look at Wylde pickups before you buy any rails designs from any boutique winder because they will be inferior to Bill Lawrence's full spectrum designs and believe me the L500XL by Bill Lawrence pickups is way better than the Dimebucker and the l500XL is the actual pickup DImebag used on Pantera albums. It was not until Damageplan that he switched to the thinner sounding Dimebucker.

    • @randymiles904
      @randymiles904 2 года назад

      @@toddwilliamson2651 wrong. Dime used the dimebucker on the last Pantera album, and I disagree with you. The 500 xl is a better all around pup, but the dimebucker is better for heavy riffs.

      As well as I like some of the more expansive Duncan's (I love my black winter, I long wanted a pair of Seth lovers and or antiquities) I think they really overdo it sometimes.
      This here is akin to the ripoff that is the EMG Het-Set (in being VERY expansive for what they are compared to the more basic standard variants).
      That's even more ridiculous with all the really great cheap Pickups you can buy nowadays. I long tend to the opinion that anything over 60 bucks for a pickup (either second hand or import far Eastern brand like GFS or Tonerider) is throwing away money.
      Kinda what fluff said in his aftermarket PU video: what can a expansive PU do, what my 50 bucks used JB with a boost pedal can't?

    So I have these 3 guitars that I have had for 15 some years. They need some serieus maintenance. I'm buing 3 sets of D'Addario EXL110 nickle wound light strings. But I was looking at the hot rail pickups aswell, because my favorite guitar player uses them for all kinds of sounds! (Mickey Melchiondo)
    Guitar 1: Black 2002 Squier SHOWMASTER. This is by far the most interesting guitar that I own but have NEVER played. This thing has 24 frets on a rosewood board, reverse headstock, super strat style layout, with a Floyd Rose bridge. And it also has these 3 screws on top of the neck that lock the strings or something.
    Now I know how to play guitar, but I resisted getting into all the technicality of it all. I never played this guitar because It was missing 2 strings and I never got it in tune?? But a month ago as I was playing away I saw this beauty standing in the corner of the room collecting dust and something in my brain clicked. This is an absolute 'guitar' rights violation, an incredible injustice to have that thing standing there because it eyes like it has a lot of potential! Unfortunately because of the lockdown I can't bring this baby to a guitar shop so I'm left on my own to figure out what exactly this thing is. I only just now figured out all the termonology for the guitar parts that I'm an absolutely unfamiliar with. It also seems that this guitar is quite a rare find. Almost nobody chooses to play these and I have a very very specific model within the showmaster branch.
    The question: On the seymour duncan webpage I found Hot rails in the form of humbuckers - Jupiter Rails & Dimebucker - and I want to know if it's worth putting those in the showmaster? That would replace the current humbucker - which I have read are worthless - and it would leave the two single row pick ups - which might also be worth replacing? - inorder to get a sound that's close to Mickey Melchiondo's strat which uses seymour duncan hot rails pickups.
    The Second Question: How do I tune a Floyd Rose Bridge..... and what's with the 3 screw clam thingies on the top of the fretboard?
    Guitar 2: a very weird Indonesian 2004 squier that I can't exactly backtrack. Can't find any similair models. Serial: IC041238631. This thing also has a humbucker that I seek to replace with a Hot rail style humbucker - Jupier Rails & dimebucker are my options. It features a stock single pickup that I might then also want to replace. I love playing this one because the fretboard is wider than the usual electric guitar, it handles similair to my acoustics.
    Guitar 3: This guitar has always been my main and I love it. A red 2005 chinese Squier Tele affinity. Now I kinda love the sound of this one but I'm curious as to what I can do with this bad boy. Put in the Seymour Duncan Hot Rails Pick up tele in the bridge, but can I then switch out the vintage neck pick up for a strat pick up? Or is that not possible or does the tele then lose to much character?
    One pick up that I left out was the Hot P-Rails. Which might also still be an option.

      4:30 the blade provides a nice broad big and squishy field coverage so that you can have the low output pickup grab up all the nuances. Put lighter gauge strings on and you'll get even more out of them. This pickup is more about *magnetic field design* than brute forcing spectral density absorption across a irregular/inconsistent field by making them super hot. If you use a noise gate you might be able to get away from it a little with these pickups.

      Epiphones stock pus, the imfamous Mudbuckers, are basically the worst Humbuckers you get nowadays in any guitar. Any aftermarket PU will be a great improvement.
      Don't want to shit on these PUs here, but they are veeeeery expensive. You could totally go with a used set of Duncan's (59 and JB for example) for hundred bucks and still have a much much improved classic humbucker sound.

  • @toddwilliamson2651
    @toddwilliamson2651 3 года назад +7

    Bill Lawrence (Wylde Pickups) invented this design and his pickups are still light years ahead of these and anybody else who makes them. With a Bill Lawrence pickup you get a full spectrum tonal response instead of the sculpted tones you get from todays winders. With a full spectrum response you can use your amp and guitar tone controls to sculpt your tone to whatever you want, instead of being forced to compensate for frequencies that have been sculpted out of the pickup.

    SD's website says the DC Resistance is 17.8k. Not 14.2k as stated in this video. It isn't really accurate to use resistance to measure how "hot" a pickup is. Go look how low the resistance is on a Bareknuckle Black Hawk. Larger wire (used to wrap) will decrease resistance without reducing output.

      They must have updated it because Duncan's site says the bridge has a 14.27k resistance now.

      I’d say yes,the BLUSA l500xl pickup is designed like the original l500L not xl it’s not as hot but still is a solid pickup. I have one in my Flying V flipped just like dimebag

    Hey Fluff, so I’m pretty new to guitar with my epiphone lp special 2, and I know it’s not worth upgrading pickups in, but my question is how do you know when your guitar is worth upgrading like that? I feel like a guitar that would be worth that should be already pretty pricey and already come with some good pickups, so why bother upgrading?

      I know I'm not fluff but basically once you find a guitar you like the feel of but don't necessarily like the sound of, that's when you can go and start looking for replacement pickups, that's just my advice
