  • Apollo will only practice when we're not around. Read somewhere that parrots will often use their alone time to really go over what they learned/what happened that day. Today, there was much (fun) yelling.
    Apollo is our 3 year-old African Grey parrot we've had since December 2020.

    • @NumeroLetter
      @NumeroLetter Год назад +242

      My conure learning to say “shut up” is one of my worst fears. I do say it to her sometimes when she’s in a rowdy mood when I’m trying to rest, but I try to limit when I say it so the phrase actually has power and isn’t just me being mean. She does say “whatcha doin’”, but when I ask her that it’s me like asking what’s up. Whenever she asks me whatcha doin’, I usually tell her whatever I’m doing (laying down, petting my cat, playing video games, whatever) and ask her what she’s doing in return. Her response is often “doin’!”, which is pretty dang cute. She’s also picked up “I’m sorry” and “I’m so sorry”, which I say whenever I’m preening her and accidentally hurt her. She says it whenever she’s in a silly mood, though, so I don’t think she understands why I say it. She’s a clever bird, but not quite as clever as Apollo!

    • @NumeroLetter
      @NumeroLetter Год назад +112

      Oh, and my conure abuses the word “ouch” 😂 She’ll bite someone and then say ouch!! Ouch is basically my way of saying “no biting”, so she repeats it after biting when she’s in a naughty mood. 😂 I’m like “yeah, that was ouch, that *hurt,* Daiquiri!!” Luckily I’m usually lying when I say her bites hurt. Most of the time, she’s gentle with me. It’s uncomfortable to be bitten, but not usually painful. We nipped that in the bud (so to speak) when she was still a baby.

    Apollo's really putting his vocabulary on display here, truly remarkable. I have to wonder if he's able to discern the concept of "outside". Does he ever say if you or a thing else is outside when you're in the house and he's away from the window?

    • @ApolloandFrens
      @ApolloandFrens  Год назад +434

      He does only use "outside" when he's able to see out a window, but in fairness, that's 90% of the time. He will often say there are birds, squirrels, and plants outside also. He's always been right about Dalton being outside, and it's hard to be certain if there's actually a bird or squirrel when he says.

      He says Soleil often, but he unsurprisingly gets their attention better when mimicking their "attention" noises. He'll use the human voice to call them when, for whatever reason, he wants them to think one of us is talking to them. Typically to warn them that what they're doing will get them into trouble.

    I love how he says "What?" at the camera with such a confrontational tone, like can't a bird have an episode of insanity in peace?

    What makes Apollo look even more insane is the random head bops while he talks lol
