Thanks for your reaction! You did so good at catching on to the point of the song… better than any reactor I’ve seen that isn’t already schooled in Ateez’s story. Matz is apparently on a play on mad hyungs/eldest. They are both Korean as are all of Ateez. There are 4 unit songs total and they are releasing a video for each one every week in January. January 10, 17, and 24 (these may be Korean dates because MATZ dropped a day earlier than we thought).

The sub-unit Matz:
Matz is the unit name for Hongjoong (Captain, main rapper, vocalist) and Seonghwa (vocalist, sub-rapper, visual). Matz are the two eldest members of Ateez and are best friends despite being complete opposites. Seonghwa (taller with the fake neck tat) is known as being quieter, softer, and kind of goofy. He is often referred to as the ‘mom’ of Ateez because the members say they go to him for comfort and he is a clean freak. Hongjoong is the leader (everyone calls him Captain) and is often referred to as the dad of the group because he is strict and a bit more outspoken. Seonghwa always says that Hongjoong was only given the skills to be a producer/idol/artist because he doesn’t have any other life skills and while Hongjoong takes care of the team, Seonghwa takes care of Hongjoong.
They are two of the three members (the third is San) fans call the Demon Line because when they go on stage, they completely shift into their stage personas. Live performances are AMAZING! There was a video I saw once of an industry insider that was talking about idols behind the scenes and he said Ateez were some of the most polite and friendly idols… all of them. He went on to say that right after a performance that Seonghwa is so immersed that he has a hard time coming out of character and ‘stalks around in HALA HALA mode’ for a while. (HALA HALA is one of their rookie tracks and is the live performances of it are often called the birth of the demon line.)
The song MATZ:
The lyrics are talking about the stalkers that put a GPS on their Carnival van and people that sell/buy their numbers and info. I’ve been on several lives where stalker fans were blowing up their cell phones. Or they get mobbed with cameras stuck right in their faces. It’s crazy and sometimes a little scary. The people in black seem to be representing those types of people. Some have camera film over their faces and the store is selling the ill-gotten media which is also projected on the wall. As you thought, the parts about being noisy and out of control is referring to people who say things like Ateez makes noise music or intimidating.
The part about the doctor saying there was room to grow… you were right about it having double meaning. On an episode of Wanteez, where they had Endoscopies as part of their checkups before going on tour, Seonghwa said a doctor told him he had a larger than normal stomach. Which makes sense because he regularly wipes out loads of food on camera… like magic. 😂
In the end, it seems to be showing they are slowly winning over the naysayers as they watch them perform and wave the Ateez flags.
And this is just information overkill:
Ateez started in 2018, but didn’t get as much publicity/perks as groups from big labels because they started from a small company called KQ that only had 10 employees when the first trainee (Hongjoong) joined. At the time, there were no plans to launch an idol group, but a very young Hongjoong sent in a mix tape saying he wanted to be an artist that created his own music. About a year later they had him come in and start training with their in-house producer Eden. Eden is the head of KQ’s in-house production team called Edenary, which includes Hongjoong and Mingi (the deep voiced rapper that you’ve seen in other videos). Edenary produces all of ATEEZ’s songs (except maybe a couple of OST tracks they’ve done for animes and kdramas). The rest of Ateez was built around Hongjoong starting about 6 months after he joined.

Ah ok, so it wasn't for like the Chinese line of Ateez. It makes sense because I was looking at their names and was like, unless these are strictly stage names, those are Korean boys lol. That's really adorable in a sibling kind of way about the "he does this cause it's all he's got and I do this to take care of him" 🥺
I love that whole Demon Line part... like the spirit of the stage possesses them. That's pretty awesome. I wonder how many other idols vary so differently on vs off stage 🤔
