      @@lawrencegreenwood4002 i wonder what makes it terrifying for you? the creatures of the ocean or is it that you can't swim? Many sailors can't swim real well but in the ocean it's salty and more buoyant , so even not perfect swimmers can do ok, as long as you can swim for about 100 yards very fast. And as far as sharks, the odds of seeing a shark at a random point in the ocean is like getting struck by lightning or winning your state Lottery, almost impossible to spot one EVEN IF YOU WANTED TO. I hope this helps reduce the fear so that you can now jump in without hesitation.

    • @TexasGTO
      @TexasGTO Год назад +11

      It's just in your head. You have to get control of your thoughts. When you do that, jumping in isn't as bad. I say that and the other day I was under my car on jack stands and suddenly got a feeling the car was about to fall on me and had to bail out from under it. lol

    great videos Sam. years ago when i was sailing with my dad, he found a neat invention to "calm" a boat down at anchor. we'd anchored at Catalina Island off of California and the surge rocked the boat pretty hard. so before the next time we went, he rigged up a couple of car oil catch pans with some lead weights, drilled a few holes around the sides and rigged them together with medium sized line. he tied the boom off at 90 degree angle to the mast and suspended the two rigged oil pans off the end of the boom. the drag from the oil pans acted as a brake when the swells rocked the boat. the thing smoothed out the motion of the boat and made for a really comfortable nights sleep.

      @Stephen Burnage how simply can you cross the Atlantic? You need some kind of auto pilot, good batteries etc
      I want to do it in an equally small boat next couple years. All I'll be able to afford is small

    • @stephenburnage7687
      @stephenburnage7687 2 года назад

      @@philipfisher5168 People have done it in rowing boats but that is a little extreme 😳. My suggestion would be 26, 28 or 30ft as there are many boats available to chose from in that size range. If you are lucky, you might find one already well equipped. Astute of you to pick up on autopilot. You need something to cross oceans (you cannot hand steer 24x7) but electric autopilots consume quite a bit of power which means more complexity (extra batteries, generator etc). The answer is usually a mechanical wind vane/self steering mechanism but these are very expensive new so try to find one second hand and/or a boat already fitted with one. Good luck.

    Back in my early sixties I took up sailing with the goal of sailing solo from Canada to Greece when pensioned off. I learned to sail and sailed the Great Lakes for a few years always remembering Melville's quote, that a Great Lakes sailor has nothing to be ashamed of in comparison to an ocean sailor. Unfortunately, I never realized my dream, but at least I have my memories of sunsets on Huron and a couple of tornadoes on Erie. I am in my eighties now, sold my boat a few years ago, but I still am young at heart thanks to my sailing years. It was a great pleasure "sailing" with you to Horta. May you always have the good winds and my God be with you on the waters................
