How could anyone with a musical background or even just a love of music dislike Tommy Emmanuel????? He is one of the single smoothest guitarists in any genre of music ! His guitar playing steps across every boundary in music today. He plays with 100% precision not to mention heart and soul. I have been a fan of Tommy's since I first learned to play the guitar myself. I would absolutely love to share a stage or even a back porch and jam with him allowing myself to steal as many licks as I can !
This is what a true CGP does and he does it with more style and emotion and tone than anyone. This guy really is from another planet. Thanks for posting this great diplay of music at it"s finest.
I can't believe how talented this Man is. I could tell his finger was hurting but only by watching. To listen to it you would never know anything was wrong. What a Professional. I'm so impressed.
I totally agree, this guy is really the total package as far as guitar/entertainers go. No one I've seen compares to him. As a guitar player, I would not even waste my time trying to do this guys's tricks, they are way to impossible for the average player. Emotion mixed with an extreme gift of music and the combination is simply amazing.
Tommy plays to him what comes natural. He is intensely passionate and has an uninhibited child-like joy in his playful performances. With unmatched skill, depth and emotion, his interpretation of 9 pd hammer is amazing and inspirational to say the least.
I have seen so many of his videos and he STILL shows me a surprise in each one! That was off the chain when he had that ride cymbal going with the bass line! NUTS!
Exactly! He's a excelent guitarist and he plays with a lot of pashion which makes his playing even better. In overal he is in my opinion the best guitarist in the world. He's a real showman and I am really waiting to see him again in the beginning of 2010!
When he incorporates the walking bassline and slapping percussion into it whilst STILL playing the melody and chords - that's insane. Forget the percussion and scratching bit, the true genius is the verse that starts at 0.41 seconds. Madness!
and god said let there be Tommy... and he saw that it was good. And he said.. ok creation is done.. Tommy is here... I'm chillin and listenin to some insane pickin... I've earned it.
The most amazing thing I think is that I've seen him 3 times over a period of about 5-6 years, and he got BETTER each time. He was ridiculous enough the first time, but a year later he did some of the same songs and he had actually improved on that!
just saw him live.....his fast stuff is great, his slow stuff is great, his covers are great, his singing is great...but his original instrumental ballads are breathtaking, he plays like an orchestra, what feel....rock on tommy!!!!!!
Favourite guitarist is down to individual taste. Best guitarist is also a matter of opinion as most well known guitarists have many strengths but maybe some weaknesses but if Tommy has any weaknesses I haven't seen them. Nobody can deny that he is one hell of a musical talent and I just can't get enough of his brilliance on the geet-box. Rock on Tommy.
i have to say, i have seen many great guitarists, but this was totally amazing!!!! I can't remember if i ever seen nothing like this......crazy.......RESPECT!!!!!
I love any guitarist that makes sure that they- themselves come through with their own sound (i.e. Andy Mckee, Alex Degrassi, Phil Keaggy or Tommy Emmanuel just to name a few). It should never be about competition (that doesn't exist between them....just with us fans), it is about complementing each other and bringing out their true voice.
Best guitarist of all time: Tommy Emmanuel hands down REASONS Plays with emotion and personality He's funny and a great entertainer He strives to make good contact with the crowd He can play a bassline, rhythm part, melody, and solo at the same time (ON ACOUSTIC) He has so many original and amazing techniques
Wow.. being able to play percussion, guitar and still sing at the same time is amazing.. I find it difficult to play complex rhythms on guitar and still sing properly.. Amazing.
Tommy is a beautiful spirit and a phenomenal player, a live wire, a one man band. He loves and respects the other greats. If you don't think so, just check out his duets with Muriel Anderson, Frank Vignola, Joscho Stephan, John Jorgensen, etc, etc, He's what a true musician should be, In my opinion -- magnanimous, generous, exuding love and enthusiasm. Anyone who can hear his "Somewhere over the Rainbow" and not become a fan simply has no soul.
Microverse1 I hate to sound adversarial here but have you watched half of his videos? He uses every technique in the book! Harmonics, muting, percussion, shuffle, crazy chord inversions, dissonant chords, insanely quick solo leads...His technique and feel are immaculate. Not to mention being great entertainment to watch. Perhaps you could show us how you would perform this particular number?
Too the people who think TE tries to steal the show all the time, well that is just who he is. It is his energy, that even he can't control, that makes him the great guitarist and performer that he is. Is he the best guitarist ever? I don't know. It is hard too lable someone the best especially on guitar. But in my opinion he is the most entertaining guitarist I have ever heard or seen. We will propably never see another player like him in our lifetimes.
I recently saw one of Tommy's contemporaries Martin Taylor on October 12, 2008. I sat in the front row no more than 10 feet away from him. Seeing is believing and I can't wait until Tommy comes to my area. These guys are UNBELIEVABLE!!! Also...check out Pete Huttlinger...
Excuse me while I just collect my bottom jaw from the floor....!!! And I've seen lots of TE videos... Talk about in the pocket! What a groove. A stupendously good rendition
I just saw this guy in San Diego...He's even more amazing "live" than in these video's...I doubt I will ever see a better acoustic guitarist in my lifetime...
There are many other clips of TE showing his superb skills that maybe you need to see. One I particularly like is where he accompanies Richard Hudson of Oklahoma, playing Guitar Rag. He doesn't often play with other performers but when he does it's always in deference to the other player. Not only is he one of the best guitarist/entertainers, he's a true gentleman as well. If you are as observant as I think you are, you should know by now that I'm not a Brit. But that's of no consequence. Cheers
i think lemonadeboy is entitled to his opinion, even if no-one else here agrees with it! its not tommy's best work in a strictly musical sense, but its one of the best things ive seen that shows his skill at guitar and pure entertainment value. every time i see a video of him, he gets even better and more fun to watch!
his voice is pretty good on this too, he needs to sing more and i think hed exponentially get more popular than he already is, i found him through looking up chet atkins and hes becoming my biggest influence, ive literally been unable to watch anything else other than his music, hse just amazing. he deserves all the attention in the world, if more guitarists studied this style music would get alot better than just the people stuck in first posistion
can't compare it with Chet or Mark.. It's unique and incredible how he can mix 2 different rhythmes (left and right hand) the same time.. Thank You for posting it!
I don't mind so much I suppose because if he was more famous he might be taken for granted by people who have no idea how brilliant he is. He's only really really appreciated by people who know their music. I think Tommy is quite happy with what he's achieved too ^^
He actually tore his finger on a string that night in Budapest during the second song. Somebody leaned over the rail and gave him a band-aid. He put it on and kept playing...with a band-aid...on the first finger on his picking hand...and still sounded amazing...=)
He does! He got his first guitar at 4, learned from his mother to accompany her playing lap steel guitar, and playing proffesionally at 9!!! He then toured Australia with his family living basically like gypsys. eventually the New South Wales Department of Education insisted him going to school...
Actually, he hurt his index finger at the very end of "Son of a Gun", just check it! At around 2:05 of boogie he's already having a hard time with it. Anyway it was a breathtaking concert all through, I was there in Budapest!!! Thx for tasilow!
I can play like that, I just don't want to ;-) Nah, seriously, that was jaw-droppingly brilliant! As for those who compare the likes of Tommy Emmanuel with Tony Rice or Chet Atkins or whoever, why bother? It's not a competition, you're allowed to enjoy the music from all of 'em.
@LibertyOne001 Yes, he used to meet/greet after the show but his schedule is SO thick he was getting exhausted. He now does smaller meet/greets before some shows to keep the numbers down. It's worth it to keep him healthy! I've seen him 4 times live and he's always such a gentleman afterwards. Good luck next time!
Tommy is more than likely the Best Guitar player alive today...I grew up listening to my Mother and Brother playing Finger Style ..My Mother played a Baby Martian.., She is a Tommy Fan now too..,,BTW I am a big Clapton fan as well, But there is a major difference in the 2 players. Tommy is the best Bar None.
I've only been playing guitar for a little over a year now. Though i have become skilled enough to play some of TE's music after hours of practice per 10 second riff, I am not good enough to decipher his 20 notes per second - hand in sight or not. I'd be better off transcribing if I heard the song played 1/4th speed without seeing his hand then watching his machine gun fingers.
This is the first video of Tommy I specifically remember seeing. I thought it was faked somehow but it dawned on me that this was real. I have seen him at guitar retreats and in concert, and he's the best that ever lived. Do not miss the chance to see him in person if you can.
Showmanship is an attribute that some performers have and are able to exploit it to their advantage. But it's not a prerequisite to be an accomplished player. I see it as a side bar, an addendum, something that happens when bouncing off the audience. I recently watched TE without an audience, I think it was a practice session before a show in Korea. To me, what grabs me the most is his clarity. I don't think I've heard him play this style before. The tune is called, 'The Robin".
Even so it's worth a look for the feelings and nuance he puts into 'The house". I have anumber of Rice favourites & 'Tipper' is one of them. One of the most blindingly fast guitarists who I really like only when he was a young teen is Jimmy Rosenburg. He is just TOO quick. Even though he was hailed as a re-incarnated Django, he lost his heart in his speed. we've lost many greats Atkins, Pass, Benson & others, who could almost make you weep with their brilliance, did so by their feelings & joy.
Funny thing is I locked myself in my room for a month to learn the Center Stage version note for note. Watching this tells he just improvs this everytime he plays it. I'm going to go smash my guitar up now.
I would kill for a tab for this. I keep coming back to this video every few months thinking the same thing.
How could anyone with a musical background or even just a love of music dislike Tommy Emmanuel????? He is one of the single smoothest guitarists in any genre of music ! What an international treasure this man is!!! He's easily the best guitarist I have ever seen (or ever will see); freaking amazing.
Tommy plays to him what comes natural. He is intensely passionate and has an uninhibited child-like joy in his playful performances. With unmatched skill, depth and emotion, his interpretation of 9 pd hammer is amazing and inspirational to say the least.
The energy and projection he possesses while playing amazingly is something within itself! Total guitar entertainment.
Love this rendition. Dude was killing it
Tommy is just so incredible..A true world class musician
I have seen so many of his videos and he STILL shows me a surprise in each one! That was off the chain when he had that ride cymbal going with the bass line! NUTS!
Exactly!

everyone don't bother any more, he is the best and will always be the best. Hand down the best player on the planet

😅what a funny story
The most amazing thing I think is that I've seen him 3 times over a period of about 5-6 years, and he got BETTER each time. He was ridiculous enough the first time, but a year later he did some of the same songs and he had actually improved on that!
Wow, just simply amazing... I'm shocked out of how awesome this performance is!
just saw him live.....his fast stuff is great, his slow stuff is great, his covers are great, his singing is great...but his original instrumental ballads are breathtaking, he plays like an orchestra, what feel....rock on tommy!!!!!!

I can't get enough of this performance!
U can see at his smile that ho LOVES what hes doing...
I love his concerts... i have seen him several tiimes...
Phenomenal. This is the best version of this I've found.
i have to say, i have seen many great guitarists, but this was totally amazing!!!! I can't remember if i ever seen nothing like this......crazy.......RESPECT!!!!!

Tommy is the very best there is, he has so many techniques AND he is an outstanding showman. His brother Phil is no slouch either!
Best guitarist of all time: Tommy Emmanuel hands down
REASONS
Plays with emotion and personality
He's funny and a great entertainer
He strives to make good contact with the crowd
He can play a bassline, rhythm part, melody, and solo at the same time (ON ACOUSTIC)
He has so many original and amazing techniques
Wow.. being able to play percussion, guitar and still sing at the same time is amazing.. I find it difficult to play complex rhythms on guitar and still sing properly.. Amazing.
I second that! Fantastic vocals on heartbreak hotel! He's great all around!
I love this song! He's getting better and better! Amazing!
greatest guitar player in the world today...just amazing...
I think he is the reason im still playing the guitar. True legend!!!
i love listening him play :) he is the best ....all the others can go hide away
I saw him yesterday night in Patrimonio (Corsica) .... Amazing!!! He's the BEST!!!
Awesom awesome awesome!!! He is the greatest guitarist alive!!
best guitar player on the planet right there... oh yeah baby

Best one man band in the planet!
Absolutely amazing!

Saw him in Mellerud, Sweden 2 days ago.. It was amazing.
Seen him jam with his brother, he is just as good to, they are amazing together!
Excuse me while I just collect my bottom jaw from the floor....!!! And I've seen lots of TE videos...

Lucky you, all those who can see him on stage!
Incredible. And how he enjoys it.

@Setivo This is a great quote. I am going to steal it. I love funny people!
If at any point this doesn't make me smile... I don't want to live anymore.
can't compare it with Chet or Mark.. It's unique and incredible how he can mix 2 different rhythmes (left and right hand) the same time.. Thank You for posting it!

GRANDE TOMMY!!!
The last time I saw Tommy live, I didn't touch my guitar for a week...I didn't feel worthy...
the man has been playing for almost 50 years. i cant imagine me doing that (i'm in my 9th year of playing classical)
best guitarist alive
Amazing....
Beyond Godlike!!!!! :))
WOWWW!!!
Marvellous!!!
Grandma mary
He is amazing

The greatest ever!
che meraviglia...
He doesn't play music he feels it.
Thanks for the info guys. :) Must be painful, but luckily Tommy is a trooper.
impressionante!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so great
