Separate zones at Victoria Park ended in 2010 or so? Hardly, the two zones within Toronto ended in 1972. Warden, Victoria Park, Islington, Royal York, and Old Mill were all in Zone 2 when they opened, and York Mills, Sheppard, and Finch were designed when Zone 2 existed. Not mentioned in the video is that Main Street and Jane were on the boundary of the zones and had some buses load/unload in the fare paid area since they served Zone 1, while other buses did so outside the fare paid zone since they served Zone 2. These stations have a layout that permitted this hybrid operation until 1972.
Also missing in the video, about the lower level of Bay Station, is the ability to see the two levels from the front of a westbound train as it leaves Yonge.

Yes we stand corrected. You are correct that the separate fare zones ended in 1972 and not 2010.

In fact, you can still see the outline where the collector's booth was on the mezzanine level at Main Street Station...it is on your right-hand side as you come down from street level, just before the trash/recycling bins and seats.

Another fun fact about Main Street Station...it is the only station on the entire system with 'Street' in the name. This is because the TTC did not want to confuse visitors to Toronto looking for Toronto's 'main station' (that being Union Station). Main Street, in Toronto's east end, is obviously *not* Toronto's 'main street', unlike many places in the US where the city's main street is actually called Main Street.
However, it *was* the main street of a community, that being East Toronto, which was annexed by the City of Toronto in 1908. Main Street itself runs from Lumsden, a few blocks north of Danforth, south across the railway line to Kingston Rd. The main part of East Toronto centered around Main Street and Gerrard - then called Lakeview - just south of the Grand Trunk Railway yards and station of York (now Danforth GO Station).

Main is more north than St. Clair because the city grid is effectively slanted to be more perpendicular to Lake Ontario.

1:55 - THAT, my friend, is a top-quality TTC fact. At first, I didn't believe it (even though I *know* Toronto is tilted 16 degrees); then I looked at Google Maps and I still didn't believe it - St Clair still looked further North to me! Had to plot it on a specialist tool for determining bearings before I accepted it :p

Also Kipling is further South than Union, and if Line 1 was extended from Finch to Steeles, the station at steeles would be roughly just as north as VMC.

@@Absolute_Zero7 :O That Kipling-Union one is another top-notch fact. I again had to verify myself, just feels so wrong!

Good job. Future ideas? Still construction workers alive now, pensioners who help build all the tunnels including all kinds of non ttc tunnels in the GTA. Local 183 is a great resource for knowledge. Go by the union hall and ask around to speak to the "old timers" who built our city. They have all the secrets 😉 All the best
