- Veteran CBC journalist and author Terry Milewski joins Harrison Faulkner to unpack the Khalistan movement that has taken a major grip on Canadian politics recently. Milewski is the author of Blood for Blood: 50 years of the Global Khalistan movement and has been studying the Khalistan movement in Canada since the 1980s.
Milewski explains how Khalistani activists have managed to control aspects of Canadian politics and use political power to agitate and foment anti-India sentiment.

I'm a Canadian Sikh, I don't support Khalistan, nor do most Sikhs. But this minority of Khalistani extremists in Canada is loud and it can't be denied that they are being provided a safe space by the Liberals/NDP. It's a matter of serious concern.

Canadians don't support Khalistanis. They are fed up. The recent survey shows that the 2nd most hated community in Canada today are Sikhs. The first is obviously the Muslims. These Khalistanis are Muslim too. Unfortunately the ORIGINAL Sikhs have fallen in the crossfire.
I've never met a Sikh guy in my whole 25 years of life that want a separate state. They're all over India, marrying non-sikhs, accepting the local culture and still wearing the pagri with pride. Like the college I studied is managed by Sikhs, I live in Bengal, they've gone beyond their way to listen to my queries and helped me every time. Where's the hate for us coming from in Canada?

As an Indian - Canadian, I wanna thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this! After having lived here in Canada for 4 years, I observed either the Canadians were unaware or confused about this whole Khalistan fiasco.
The Canadian youth barely knows about the Air India Flight 182 bombing by these Khalistan's. On June 23, 1985, a bomb exploded on Air India Flight 182 en route from Toronto to London, England killing all 329 people aboard, most of them Canadians (268). To this day, the Air India bombing is still the worst terrorist attack in Canadian history blamed on pro-Khalistan elements.

Thanks for doing this interview with the subject matter expert who is Canadian. I am of Indian origin, and seeing khalistan slogans, flags, hate messages makes me feel unsafe. The government's siding with khalistani extremist and news channels referring to them as activists makes me even worse. I felt unsafe to post my opinions on my social media account about this issue, so where is the freedom of expression for me. Let's look at things logically: Punjabis and Sikhs in general are pretty much loved throughout India, from each corner. I am quite concerned by how many Sikhs Canada takes in. Sikhs only make up 1.7% of India's population but 36% of the Indian Canadian population are Sikhs (higher than Hindus). I have no personal issues with Sikhs and they've all been great to me but you have to wonder if something is happening behind the scenes. Why is there this extreme misalignment with India's demographics in Canada. Is this the same trend in other Anglo nations? As Terry noted, I also noted myself that the majority of Sikhs in India are not supportive of Khalistan in Punjab but I'm not sure if that can be said for Sikhs in Canada. I remember being in BC in the 90s when Ujjal Dosanjh, a modern Sikh spoke about his encounters in the 80s with Sikh extremists on Vancouver's streets and it really made me wonder why our government is not clamping down on this. Seperatist movements existing in countries that are not hosting the seperatist region should not be tolerated. It's steering us in this unnecessary downward PR collision course of conflicts between Canada and India which is also not what the US wants right now. Anyways, really appreciative to hear Terry's input.
