Can you imagine the rush this must have been for a pilot, or even an AA gunner on a ship, where every flak round fired at a plane gets louder and louder as the elevations decreases. Just the sensory feeling of pulling the trigger on both sides must have produced a feeling that is indescribable, even a 100 years after the fact.
This was not really realistic to how the Battle of Midway actually took place. In short most of the squadrons hit the Japanese fleet at different times and most of the Torpedo squadrons were wiped out but by the time VB6 / VB10 from the USS Enterprise were coming down over the Akagi and Kaga with their SBDs...the Japanese defenses were pretty depleted from the prior attacks and Combat Air Patrol were flying way too low and away from the fleet so they dove down only facing mostly enemy Flak and around the same time VB3 from the USS Yorktown struck the Soryu giving the US 3 enemy carrier kills within 10 minutes.
Talk to veterans and read actual accounts of war. Its not a rush, guys are crying, vomiting, running away, freaking out, friendly fire - then doing horrific shit to civilians to pass on the trauma.

As a veteran of many WW2 allied aircampaigns I can can confirm that being shot by 20mm rounds by other planes or ship deck guns would make me see red, but for slightly more than 4 seconds.
Not to be that guy, but he tangled with zeros in a Dauntless, no less, while carrying a 1000 lb bomb, dove to drop said single bomb, continue to tangle with zeros in a dauntless while evading flak, climb while while tangling with zeros and being easy pickings for the flak, and then drop a second(?!) 1000 lb bomb supposedly crippling two Japanese carriers. He must be flying the most powerful plane of the entire war. Oh, and all those guys bailing would almost certainly be dead, either dead on impact, exposure, or picked of by Japanese patrol boats and escort ships.
has a head-on collision with an enemy aircraft, completely fine. Bumps into a friendly aircraft, both are fine. Shoots 2 bullets into enemy airplane, instantly destroyed lol

Maybe, or Japan would have kept America out of the war like she should have been due to her policy. But we all know she wanted this to happen. Wouldn't have had all the profits and world domination if they didn't get involved.
Well now the west coast states are liberal communists so not sure that's any better. Yes Japan did attack the US at Peal Harbor first but there's a lot of very suspicions things that have been declassified that lead a critical thinker to believe some within the US government and military intelligence knew Japan was planning a attack on Pearl Harbor and allowed it to happen to gin up support for entering the war. They intercepted radio communications from the Japanese attack fleet several days prior and they moved all the carriers out of Pearl Harbor days before the attack so they wouldn't be destroyed.
@@merdoc81 uh yah. It's not just coming to light. Things like Station H in Oahu which picked up Isoroku Yamamotos only transmission to Japan on December 6th that he was carrying out the attack at pearl Harbour. America had already broken both codes purple and orange used by the Japanese. America maneuvered her self into a position to get attacked because the general public didn't want to go to war, especially after the results of both Dunkirk and World War 1 Americans were not inclined to go to war. Japan was taught to do everything it did up until 1945 by the United States. So it's really the states fault for any atrocities. They taught the Japanese how to kill their own indisgienous population. Showed how to fight guerilla forces (killing civilians) and showed how to force isolationist countries to open to force. "SBDs with open canopies" is kind of a trope though. There are lots of historic photos showing that crews flew like that. Considering the plane (historicaly) is a naval dive-bomber there are certain upsides to it as well. The biggest one is that it greatly increases visibility for the pilot (an actual complaint of US-pilots in early'ish WWII were the birdcage-style canopies that obstructed pilots vision). A benefit of that during a combat-sortie is that it helps with targetaquisition, since the SBD doesn't have a floorwindow to show the pilot whats beneth him, he has to check the target first before an attack and can't initiate a dive every 5 minutes to check if he would have a good angle to drop since he carries up to 1500 Ibs of bombs. Better to just look out of the cockpit and over the wing. There are also no real downside to having the canopy open since the gunner/radiooperator station and the pilot station are not seperated from each other. If you have a gun in the back it's going to be cold either way. The only time where it is useful to fly with a closed canopy would be during heavy weather for obvious reasons.
@@peerschulz2029 That's interesting. I would have thought you'd get more areodynamic drag with the canopy open and make the plane slower than it needed to be.
As a German fighter on the Messerschmitt BF-109, I can confirm, my plane has taken thousands of hits and never crash. And I remember vividly I flew straight into a Heinkel HE 111. Just bounced off. Nothing much
If anything, I think this does prove that there may still be a market for a fun, arcade-y WW2-era air combat game. If Sledgehammer--which is not a developer with much experience with aircraft and air combat games, to say the least--can churn out something like this, then a proper aircraft game developer like Project Aces may able to come up with something really special.
The flak seems a bit over volume of actual Japanese flak levels during the war. Which were known to be quite limited. Their doctorine relied more on the zeros defending the fleet then idea like ship based batteries.
I have a few model ships of the IJN, at the start of the war, this is accurate but as the war dragged on, they refitted their ships with heavier AA. Even the famous Yamato had two of its 155mm triple turrets removed in favor of an impressive array of AA guns. The destroyers they launched during the war were already fitted with type 98, 10cm dual purpose guns which were very handy anti-aircraft guns. The main drawback of the IJN compared to the USN was that they used timed fuzes on their AA shells, the USN used proximity fuzes which were very effective in all ranges unlike the timed ones.
Ye I don't think US would have won that battle with this much flaks lol I think people including the devs underestimate the power of those things exploding close enough to your plane to destabilize it or disorient the pilot himself.
Yes, the Japanese carriers didn't have nearly enough anti-aircraft guns. In general, Japan didn't focus on defense *at all,* their idea of a fight was a lightning-fast decapitation with a Samurai sword and end of story. This unfortunate doctrine was their downfall in WW II, because they had no plan for what to do if they started losing.
Really I didn't know all these World War I veterans are still alive when documentary's say there's only a few alive and they're not even pilots. Video game World War I pilots don't count

This mission is based off of an elite anti-kamikaze squadron that rammed into Japanese planes before they could reach the American targets. Fascinating
As a doughboy serving in the American Civil War, I can confirm the planes were completely indestructible as long as I was flying them. Could fly those babies right into the ground and be A-OK.
Being a dive bomber looks hectic and it took wabos to do, but torpedo bombing was a wholenother level of crazy. At least a dive bomber could dodge a little bit while making a dive and the dive made their speed fast. TB aircraft had to fly level and slow and literally were sitting ducks.
Also, for the TB crews, their Mark XIV torpedoes were trash, failing to steer properly or detonate at least 70% of the time. In a pre-war cost-cutting move, the Bureau of Ordnance had barely tested them. Then the shooting started and sailors were left with those POS torpedoes. Crews that tried to fix them got disciplined by the higher-ups for "tampering", and the Bureau consistently blamed pilots and submariners for incompetence. In short, for realism, if this was a TB mission, the game would instruct you to replace the DualSense controller with a midget and a brick and let him punch you in the balls for 5 straight hours, then tell you the mission failed because you suck. For reference, here's a well-researched video on the whole Mark XIV fiasco: ruclips.net/video/eQ5Ru7Zu_1I/видео.html
Way too many fighters, the zeros were way too low to intercept the dive bombers because they had spent the entire morning intercepting the torpedo bombers, without their sacrifice the dive bombers would have been mince meat as well
I'd be more tempted to try this game out if there was an entire portion of the game dedicated to flying. Shame there aren't games that focus on the stories of pilots more. There's so many stories to tell, instead we get more shooters... with single soldiers taking out the entirety of the Axis....
War Thunder is more realistic, when you reaching high speed, your wings may break from strong air resistance or when you sharply change your fly direction the pilot can lose consciousness.
As a pilot in the second Punic war, I could only wish we had infinite bullets. Of course maybe that was only an option in the infinity armored dive bombing fighters of WW2.
This is the problem, people can't really just play a game without expecting it to be super perfect, they have to critique every aspect, it doesn't have to be super realistic, it looks damn fun imo and that's all that should be expected
Great graphics and mostly non-cringe dialogue/acting, but comic book/arcade combat and flying physics. Torpedo bombers having dogfights with Zeros--and winning?
You can do a good job to tell the story of what dive bombers experienced during the war. I think that's what they should have focused on. It would have made it more realistic. Or fighters, whatever. Doing both just kills it for me.

My Grandpa told me stories of the people he went up against during the London air raids. He had a couple of Kraut friends that he would spend hours playing bumper cars after they finished their raids.
They don't make planes of this quality anymore unfortunately. Bumping into other planes without even much as a scratch, respawning ammo, defying the laws of physics. True realism right here.
This is not historical...SBD Dauntless dive bombers weren't intercepted by Zeros...on the other hands, nearly all TBD Devastators torpedo bombers were decimated by Zeros in Midway

@@jdlamb4212 that guy thinks hollywood movies are documentaries lol

Maybe, or Japan would have kept America out of the war like she should have been due to her policy. But we all know she wanted this to happen. Wouldn't have had all the profits and world domination if they didn't get involved.
@@Canadianvoice The US was attacked by Japan first? So then they joined the war effort. I’m not sure what you are getting at here
Well now the west coast states are liberal communists so not sure that's any better.
Flying with open canopy. Extremely realistic...
Or flying directly into another plane and survive.
I always had the canopy open during carrier operations in IL2, didn't know that was such a big deal lol
Who needs maximum performance in combat? lol.
Dammmnit! Even my head was turning too!! 👀👀

Ye I don't think US would have won that battle with this much flaks lol
I think people including the devs underestimate the power of those things exploding close enough to your plane to destabilize it or disorient the pilot himself.
Not to mention the flak only detonated at whatever range was set iirc. So having flak constantly blow up in front of your plane as you dive is silly
That's all you find unrealistic??? 🤔 The whole overdriven battle scene is completely unrealistic.

This game was the sole reason for me buy PlayStation after my first online experience with it on PS II. I tried getting with the Battle Fields, Call of Duty and the Division series games.
Yeah id rather be in a SBD dive bomber than a TBD torpedo plane

Well....War Thunder is an option...
War Thunder is more realistic, when you reaching high speed, your wings may break from strong air resistance or when you sharply change your fly direction the pilot can lose consciousness.
Are we going to ignore the fact that the plane's engine is running WITHOUT a pilot inside the plane?
As a pilot in the second Punic war, I could only wish we had infinite bullets. Of course maybe that was only an option in the infinity armored dive bombing fighters of WW2.
Were you part of the squadron that provided air support for the Carthaginian panzers during the charge at Cannae?
This graphics say everything why i like console more than computer
Amazing, console graphics finally reached 2005 PC level graphics 😂
A dive bomber that was forced to engage fighters would have jettisoned its bomb load when called upon to do so.
This is the problem, people can't really just play a game without expecting it to be super perfect, they have to critique every aspect, it doesn't have to be super realistic, it looks damn fun imo and that's all that should be expected

Yeah, the old dilemma between realism and fun. Impossible to please all of us, I know.
You can do a good job to tell the story of what dive bombers experienced during the war. I think that's what they should have focused on. It would have made it more realistic. Or fighters, whatever. Doing both just kills it for me.
