1985 was a turbulent year for Bulgarian football which nearly derailed the national team on their road to Mexico '86 - during the Bulgarian Cup final between fierce rivals CSKA (then known as CSKA Spetemvriysko Zname, translated in English to CSKA Spetember Flag) and Levski Sovia (then known as Levski-Spartak) a brawl broke out on the pitch between the players. The communist authorities (Bulgaria was under communist rule back then) imposed severe sanctions on all levels as a result - CSKA was rebranded as Sredets, while Levski became Vitosha. Several players, including Hristo Stoichkov and Borislav Mihaylov, were banned for life (in the case of Mihaylov he was part of the national team as well), while others were banned for some period. Those bans for the playes were lifted in 1986, which allowed Mihaylov and others to represent Bulgaria in Mexico, while Sredets and Vitosha became CSKA and Levski once more in 1989.
I am Korean. Bulgaria drew 1-1 with South Korea in the 1986 World Cup. The match was South Korea's first point in World Cup. Why is Bulgaria weakened now? Until the '90s, they were known as a strong team.
Well, it's simple - corruption and nepotism at all levels. Most of these players from the late 80's til the mid 90's also happen to control the Bulgarian FA. Borislav Mihaylov took control of the Bulgarian Football Union in 2004 and since then Bulgaria has regressed hard under his rule.
Because there is just one club which does the things at high level and it is Ludogorets. The team is though mostly dominated by foreign players. The other two clubs are not the same as before. CSKA went bankrupt in 2016 and Levski is financially unstable. So not a lot of talents make it to the national team. The whole Youth football with their academies is corrupt to some extend.
@@pisceansith6915 And they have performed rather poorly almost since then. I vaguely remember them at Euro 96, WC 98 and Euro 2004 with forgettable group eliminations. 93-94 were THE years and they made the most of it.
@@rickzane6433 98 and 2004 yes, but Euro 96 was a rather missed opportunity and the team didn't perform poorly - 4 points in a tough group with France, Spain and Romania wasn't exactly something shameful. Netherlands and Czech Rep also had 4 points, but it was enough for them to go through. Romania was with their golden generation, Spain and France were packed with top class players, and both teams had some crazy unbeaten runs prior to the tournament (both France and Spain got eliminated on penalties, without losing a match) . Stoichkov had a clear goal vs Spain which was wrongfully disallowed for offside which could have given Bulgaria the win (match ended 1-1). At the same time Munteanu scored a goal for Romania vs Bulgaria, which was also wrongfully disallowed (match ended 1-0 for Bulgaria). Had both goals been allowed Bulgaria would have still had 4 points, put the win vs Spain would have put Bulgaria on second place because Spain would have been also with 4, with the h2h match would have been won by Bulgaria. It was a very close call, unlike 1998 and 2004. Stoichkov was also on fire - he was one of only two players to score in each of the 3 group matches, the other one was Alan Shearer. He was also the only player who didn't make it to the play offs who was included in the ideal team of the tournament.
What a shameful refereeing by the German referee Tritchler in the France - Bulgaria game - a clear penalty for Bulgaria at the 05:17 spot not called, then a completely made up penalty in France’s favor later.

Just because they don't buy Black players from Africa. I don't think that France can win Bulgaria without Mbape and other black guys.
I remember Bulgaria in us 1994 they done very well.they were perfect 👌
Bulgaria in WC 94 was great, (Stoichkov was on fire). In Mexico, not so great, weak playing.
Me too, they prevented France from getting to USA 94
