The film Manhunter first introduced Hannibal Lecter but as a different actor. Sadly the Oscar winning director Jonathan Demme from TSOTL died. He was also famous for the film Chained Heat a women in prison exploitation film. Michelle Pfeiffer was offered the role of Clarice but she passed since it was too dark for her so it went to Jodie. She passed on Hannibal which went to Julianne Moore. The actor of Buffalo Bill would eventually land in the tv series MONK. The US Senator's daughter actress would do the tv show Grey's Anatomy. The creepy doctor was in the film The Pelican's Brief a thriller with Julia Roberts. Another stellar Hopkins performance? MAGIC from the 1970s. Foster is excellent in The Brave One, The Accused(Oscar winning), and Taxi Driver(Oscar nominated).

Hannibal and Red Dragon are definitely worth watching. The tone of Hannibal is less thriller and more slasher. Red Dragon is a prequel that follows a different character but returns to the roots Silence established. Hard to live up to the original though.

This was one of my father’s favorite movies. We always joked that it was his Easter movie to go along with The Shining, which was his Christmas movie. I highly recommend the book, and the first one too, Red Dragon. I’ve read both multiple times. The first scene and the last one with Clarice and Lector are two of my favorites in all of cinema. I can watch them a million times, and would not get tired of them. But every scene between them makes is fantastic.

Chilton: The doctors managed to reset her jaw, more or less. Save one of her eyes. His pulse never got above 85, even when he ate her tongue. We did not even see the picture Chilton showed Starling, so it was left to our imaginations, a good decision by the director, knowing when to show and not to show something. At this point, we have not even seen Lector, and this is the image we are already prompted to imagine. Great stuff!

Red Dragon is well worth the watch, but it's also the second time that Hollywood adapted that novel, the first was a film called Manhunter from the mid-80s (and it really shows).
And partly on the Green River Killer, who was active, and not caught until about 13 years after SotL was published, finally being identified as Gary Ridgway.
Hope you'll watch Manhunter, which is based on the book before this. It's an 80s masterpiece directed by Michael Mann, with brilliant cinematography, an incredible soundtrack and a really intense central performance from William Peterson. It's very different to Silence, but every bit as good.
This movie still holds up after all these years as one of the best thrillers of all time. Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins are probably at the best they ever been and they have incredible chemistry together. Hannibal and Red Dragon are definitely worth watching, they are just not as great as this one. I would say watch Hannibal at least because it is a direct sequel to this movie, it’s just unfortunate that Jodie Foster didn’t reprise the role of Clarice in that movie.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I knew every line of this movie when i was in high school back in the day and still do. If you like this you should watch Red Dragon. Sir Anthony Hopkins was great in that as well.
If you get to watch the movie again, watch how hopkins doesn't blink in his scenes. He has less than 30 mins total screen time in the whole movie and he is amazing.

Great movie. Should also watch the sequel, Hannibal, and the even better prequel that came out the year after, Red Dragon (from the same screenwriter of this movie, and they do feel similar). Both feature Anthony Hopkins and were released 10/11 years after The Silence of the Lambs, even though he is playing the character well younger in the prequel.

You need to carry a jack with you, man! I understand that a lot of young people haven't learned how to change a tire themselves, and rely on things like Triple A (I have it myself) but you definitely do NOT want to be stuck on the side of the highway alone, especially at night, and you can't always rely on cell service. Invest now in a good spare tire, a key that you're sure fits your lug nuts (if you need one; my car does) and a jack. Many jacks come with the lug nut wrench (aka tire iron) included the lever for the jack. Trust me on this: you don't want to wait for a flat (or worse, a total blow-out) before you have what you need. Please don't put it off. It's really quick and easy to do, especially if you find someone trustworthy to teach you, and practice doing it a few times at home. ❤
Honestly, I don't know who would say Hannibal and Red Dragon aren't very good Ollie! I read Hannibal and thought the movie remained pretty faithful to the book. I didn't get around to reading Red Dragon, but I did see Manhunter (the first filming of Red Dragon from 1986) Both movies have some equally gripping, intelligent and very disturbing moments!

@@RLucas3000 Certain types of beans, yes - depends on the medication. Same for certain kinds of meat, like beef liver. All kinds of foods interact with medications. There are certain meds you shouldn't take with grapefruit juice or milk, for example. And then there's booze, period, much less just chianti that you shouldn't ever mix with certain meds.
Actually I eat census-takers' livers rather plain, WITHOUT fava beans or a bottle of Chianti (if you can picture such a bizarre meal). I prefer human livers soaked in au jus. With lots of shredded, fried onions.

Everybody is hitting on Clarice but IRL hitting on Foster is a waste of time and effort. She doesn't fly that way. 🙄 She has been married to a woman since it became legal in Caliphony. 7. Dr. Lecter was treating Clarice 8. Others will pass this to you as well but: This movie won ALL 5 of the big Oscars.😎 Levine should have gotten best supporting.

I live about 45 minutes south of where most of the film was shot. Allegheny and Fayette County seems to be prime locations were scenes were shot. A lot of areas in around Pittsburgh doubled for West Virginia, Maryland, and Ohio locations. As always you did another great vid. Keep it up.

I'm having an old friend for dinner Don't worry, many of us felt the same - not so bad if he ate Chilton. This movie has 3 disturbing characters- Hannibal Lecter, Buffalo Bill, Dr Chilton. You could understand Bill being completely unhinged given his insanity. You warm to Lecter because of his tenderness with Clarice. However Chilton doesn't have redeemable qualities. The inappropriate flirting , taking credit , taunting patients/ prisoners. Maybe you need to be a bit or become insane running an insanity asylum
I was too young to see this when it originally came out, but Fathom Events rereleased it in theaters a couple years ago. It was worth seeing on the big screen and in the dark.
Your car should have a jack. Probably under the trunk's floor, with the spare tire. If it doesn't have a jack, you should absolutely get one. Otherwise, if you blow a tire in a remote place, as most of Canada is, you will be very unhappy about it. And it happens more often than one might suppose. I've had to change tires at least four times in a decade, and that is with new, well maintained cars and tires. There is a lot of pointy rubbish on the highways that one cannot even see. It has happened thrice were I came back to the car from the store, or in the morning, to see a 100% flat tire, only to find a screw or nail in it from who knows where. So, you should have: 1) Jack, 2) Spare, 3) Road flares/lights/reflectors, 4) flashlight, 5) Tire goo that can quick repair a hole in the tire, 6) 1st Aid Kit, 7) Kitty litter/salt for ice, 8) For Canada, a couple wool blankets, thermal blanket & a tarp. 9) For Canada in winter if you live in a rural area, or traverse one regularly, hatchet and fire starting kit.
Hannibal is a Ridley Scott film so you may be interested in watching it just because of that. Red Dragon might get your interest just for the cast alone.

Since you've been doing and enjoying Jodie Foster lately you might want to do one more of her great performances. I highly recommend watching "Nell" 1994 with her Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson. It's one of her best.

It's more that it's something not usually shown, and since men don't experience it personally it seems weird or excessive. The bug guy flirting was mutual though, I'm not sure Demme quite got that across. In the book Clarice starts a relationship with bug guy and that's why they came to her graduation.
Simply put, Dr. Lecter is the scariest psychopath Ive ever seen on film. And speaking of Howard Shore, have you seen The Fly? It’s Shore’s best score pre-LOTR/Hobbit.

Hannibal and Red Dragon are definitely worth watching, they are just not as great as this one. I would say watch Hannibal at least because it is a direct sequel to this movie, it’s just unfortunate that Jodie Foster didn’t reprise the role of Clarice in that movie.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I knew every line of this movie when i was in high school back in the day and still do. If you like this you should watch Red Dragon. Sir Anthony Hopkins was great in that as well.
I remember this came out in theaters in 1991, the day I graduated high school myself. I always thought of this movie as my ultimate graduation gift.
The “it rubs the lotion” and “will you F me” scenes are so iconic they been parody in so many movies and shows.
If you get to watch the movie again, watch how hopkins doesn't blink in his scenes. He has less than 30 mins total screen time in the whole movie and he is amazing.
I read this comment, looked back at the video, and immediately saw him blink. :P It's true he doesn't blink much though, and absolutely nails the intensity of his glare.

Great movie. Should also watch the sequel, Hannibal, and the even better prequel that came out the year after, Red Dragon (from the same screenwriter of this movie, and they do feel similar). Both feature Anthony Hopkins and were released 10/11 years after The Silence of the Lambs, even though he is playing the character well younger in the prequel.
Red Dragon is a great movie with an amazing cast!

Ed Gein is the serial killer you refer to. He is the inspiration for _Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre,_ and Buffalo Bill in this movie, to varying extents.
I was 11 when this came out, watched it with older siblings. Still one of my favorite movies.
Ted Levine voiced "Rusty Nail" in Joy Ride and starred as "Big Bob" in the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes, both of which I recommend more than Hannibal.
Crawford plays the bad guy in the movie "Backdraft"...thats a cool Fire Fighter movie about "family"....lol

Brian Cox plays Hannibal Lektor (Lecter). Not as good as this movie but better than the sequels imho. Happy Helloween.🎃

Yes I love Howard Shore’s scores too. My favorite score for the film The Fountain by Clint Mansel. That film and score are both brilliant.
You need to carry a jack with you, man! I understand that a lot of young people haven't learned how to change a tire themselves, and rely on things like Triple A (I have it myself) but you definitely do NOT want to be stuck on the side of the highway alone, especially at night, and you can't always rely on cell service. Invest now in a good spare tire, a key that you're sure fits your lug nuts (if you need one; my car does) and a jack. Many jacks come with the lug nut wrench (aka tire iron) included the lever for the jack. Trust me on this: you don't want to wait for a flat (or worse, a total blow-out) before you have what you need. Please don't put it off. It's really quick and easy to do, especially if you find someone trustworthy to teach you, and practice doing it a few times at home. ❤
Honestly, I don't know who would say Hannibal and Red Dragon aren't very good Ollie! I read Hannibal and thought the movie remained pretty faithful to the book. I didn't get around to reading Red Dragon, but I did see Manhunter (the first filming of Red Dragon from 1986) Both movies have some equally gripping, intelligent and very disturbing moments!

@@RLucas3000 Certain types of beans, yes - depends on the medication. Same for certain kinds of meat, like beef liver. All kinds of foods interact with medications. There are certain meds you shouldn't take with grapefruit juice or milk, for example. And then there's booze, period, much less just chianti that you shouldn't ever mix with certain meds.
Actually I eat census-takers' livers rather plain, WITHOUT fava beans or a bottle of Chianti (if you can picture such a bizarre meal). I prefer human livers soaked in au jus. With lots of shredded, fried onions.

4. In the book Crawford did have a "thing" for Clarice.
5. "I'm coming to get you Murdock". The late Charles Napier/Lt. Boyle played Murdock in Rambo First Blood II. A great first time/share.
6. Everybody is hitting on Clarice but IRL hitting on Foster is a waste of time and effort. She doesn't fly that way. 🙄 She has been married to a woman since it became legal in Caliphony.

I live about 45 minutes south of where most of the film was shot. Allegheny and Fayette County seems to be prime locations were scenes were shot. A lot of areas in around Pittsburgh doubled for West Virginia, Maryland, and Ohio locations. As always you did another great vid. Keep it up.

This movie has 3 disturbing characters- Hannibal Lecter, Buffalo Bill, Dr Chilton.
You could understand Bill being completely unhinged given his insanity.
You warm to Lecter because of his tenderness with Clarice.
However Chilton doesn't have redeemable qualities.
The inappropriate flirting , taking credit , taunting patients/ prisoners.
Maybe you need to be a bit or become insane running an insanity asylum

Philadelphia is worth a watch you won't be disappointed.
I was too young to see this when it originally came out, but Fathom Events rereleased it in theaters a couple years ago. It was worth seeing on the big screen and in the dark.
That Jackie Stallone cameo at 10:15 always gets me...
Your car should have a jack. Probably under the trunk's floor, with the spare tire. If it doesn't have a jack, you should absolutely get one. Otherwise, if you blow a tire in a remote place, as most of Canada is, you will be very unhappy about it. And it happens more often than one might suppose. I've had to change tires at least four times in a decade, and that is with new, well maintained cars and tires. There is a lot of pointy rubbish on the highways that one cannot even see. It has happened thrice were I came back to the car from the store, or in the morning, to see a 100% flat tire, only to find a screw or nail in it from who knows where. So, you should have: 1) Jack, 2) Spare, 3) Road flares/lights/reflectors, 4) flashlight, 5) Tire goo that can quick repair a hole in the tire, 6) 1st Aid Kit, 7) Kitty litter/salt for ice, 8) For Canada, a couple wool blankets, thermal blanket & a tarp. 9) For Canada in winter if you live in a rural area, or traverse one regularly, hatchet and fire starting kit.
You go to do Michael Mann's Manhunter (1986) as well. It's a hidden gem in the franchise.

Manhunter was the original Hannibal movie and it is nearly as good as The Silence of The Lambs. Maybe even better in some ways. Directed by Michael Mann. Well worth reacting too.
And Brian Cox was actually more realistic as a Psycopath. No melodramatics

You should absolutely watch the sequel Hannibal and the prequel Red Dragon. They are both great films and very different with stunning action by Hopkins
Since you've been doing and enjoying Jodie Foster lately you might want to do one more of her great performances. I highly recommend watching "Nell" 1994 with her Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson. It's one of her best.
17:15 I don't think it's weird that Clarice gets a lot of male attention in this movie. It's more that it's something not usually shown, and since men don't experience it personally it seems weird or excessive. The bug guy flirting was mutual though, I'm not sure Demme quite got that across. In the book Clarice starts a relationship with bug guy and that's why they came to her graduation.
