I live 3 kilometers away from the neander valley where the Neanderthaler (tal is german for valley) was found . It is a great place for going on a walk and the archaeological sides and museums are very interesting and I have been there multiple times.

Yes there was some crossbreeding, but even in incredibly racist societies modern humans had and have interracial relationships with discriminated against groups as well. Theres plenty of reason to believe that warring and killing happened just as often as breeding did as well, its not like every neanderthal either died of old age, disease, or hunting accidents, theres multiple specimens that have been found that were very clearly killed by other hominins. And given the history of homo sapiens as a whole (with there never being a year in recorded history without a war), that implies that fighting over territory and resources mustve happened, because either we wouldve started it ourselves, OR neanderthals were also keen to fight over similar things, which would also lead to fights with homo sapiens in retaliation if neanderthals ever started it. After reading a book ,,Who We Are and How We Got Here" by geneticist David Reich I remember him positing that Neanderthals actually were likely very similar in terms of cognitive function to us but due to lacking the FOXP2 gene which codes for a CNS transcriptional repressor resulted in them having limited communication abilities which significantly impacted social cohesion. The hypothesis was somewhat corroborated by a study in mice where the gene having analogous coding function to FOXP2 was modified or silenced, they displayed behavioral differences such as making odd sounds and miscommunicating their needs. I've heard recently this has been called into question, but interesting hypothesis nontheless.

In larger groups you tend to be able to divide labor more, which leads to more specialization. Over time I'm sure that gender roles sprung forward from that, as the different genders proved to be better suited (on average) to certain tasks. As the video says, Neanderthals tended to live in smaller family units as compared to humans of the time, possibly owing to their comparatively less advanced communication abilities.

Yeah, I guess, but societal development is *_way_* more complicated than simply "dumb or not". _The _*_vast_* majority of anatomically modern humans across history lived more primitively than _functionally _*_every_* human after ~10,000 BCE. There seems to be a rather distinct _lack_ of "inevitable human dominance" in a manner which could be attributed solely to intellect from the literature I've seen.

I've wondered what kind of rights those brutes would have if they survived. Historically as slaves, or recently as intelligent pets (like golden retrievers), or useful tools, like mine-hunting dolphins. I don't see them embraced by Enlightenment philosophers and the modern source of human rights. Today, at best, the Neanders would have a kind of special protected status, like mentally disabled H.sapiens, or perhaps the French.
