It’s crazy how people romanticize Korea and are unable to understand every country has its pitfalls and just because your K-pop bias lives in Korea doesn’t mean that the country itself is not without faults.
Yep, many people move here thinking that changing countries (and basing it off of what they see in media) will solve all their problems. Whereas in reality, it may just be magnified, coupled with culture shock.
a lot of people to the same with America that or demonize it

Terra Michelle I agree. I live in Japan, but I'm gonna be that person and say that I don't see how black fans of K-pop don't see it as full of culture vultures. I once saw someone say that a black girls group (I don't even know if they're popular/still together) in Korea was stealing Korean culture and I was like WTF? How are they stealing by participating in an industry that "borrows" so heavily from black culture while being so far removed from it? 😑
this. i had a friend visit me here in korea. she put the whole country on a pedestal based on what she's seen in dramas and k-pop. when she saw seoul's litter, got pushed around by ahjimma and ahjussi, got lots of stares because of her different look, she let these negatives be enough of a reason to give up on korean culture. i think it's a shame because her reasons are things i feel a traveler can adapt to. it's a shame because beyond this there is stuff to enjoy about the culture.
She's not critisizing Korea, she's sharing her experience. Every country has its own good and bad things, and I find it so useful that people who works or studies abroad decided to share not just the things that they like, but also the ones that they didn't. We should stop idolizing or idealizing asian cultures, because they are indeed interesting cultures with their "flaws", like any other.
Well I agree but most people have no problem with Korea...I'm a big fan of Korea and Japan... There might be some bumps here and there...But am I complaining... Exactly
@@cassiadsouza709 Yes that is true. I am not judging all Indians as racist in fact I know many that are decent however the fact remains that India is the most racist country of earth. Google is your friend in this instance.
So true lol. In fact the majority of them do not look like kpop idols. Kpop Idols are groomed to look like that. Regular Korean people dye their hair and whiten their skin to LOOK like idols. Its a sad business.
Visited my sister in Seoul, I was shocked that literally every woman was in a full face of makeup and dressed up. I was sitting on the train in yoga pants feeling like a hobo.

Nowing that this had destroyed peoples’ lives and ruined careers and let to alot of suicide is even more sad. Koreans are obsessed about beauty and their beauty standarts are crazy. They don’t even care if their beauty will look fake af.
Anyone who romanticizes korea based on k-dramas and k-pop should watch the KBS TV show "My neighbor charles". It shows a glance of what struggles a foreigner faces on a day-to-day basis after moving to Korea which will give you a better understanding on how difficult it is to survive in Korea. Highly recommended to koreaboos or anyone interested to move to korea. Like they say, the grass always looks greener on the other side. :)
I never saw that program but even without seeing it, I can easily guess how difficult it must be for foreigners, specially people from outside far east asia. As Korean immigrants in the U.S., Koreans also experienced equally idiotic cultural differences. People with more cultural experiences like yourselves should educate people how to reduce the cultural gap with patience . In the end it will bring a greater benefit from living abroad.
Parker Westman not all are rude in my opinion most of the people I know are very respectful especially to elders including myself..please choose choice of words carefully😓
Isha Goyal I think almost nobody will talk about your skin colors.. if u ask things to pedestrians they would be kind to anybody from other contry ( but not everyone is fluent on english :( ive seen many blacks(nor being racist) but i always think they are so cool
I am also Korean, but Koreans are too short. Society has changed so rapidly that even Koreans have a hard time living in this country. Don't come to Korea. It is the country with the highest suicide rate. I also want to leave Korea.
As a Korean girl raised in Australia, I understand where you're coming from. Even though I didn't grow up in Korea, the older generations of my family are pretty racist and sexist. Normally, older generation Korean people are extremely racist towards especially darker skin tones, but, younger generations are generally more accepting. I think because Korea is such a homogenous society, they don't get much awareness and exposure to different races. Which can indefinitely lead to racial stereotypes, racial generalisations, etc. I think what Korea needs is more foreigners - more exposure to different races and cultures. Hopefully, less Korean people can be so close-minded and accept the differences in everyone!
I hate to say this about any place especially one that I like part of its culture (KPop and kdrama) but it’s true and I agree. I try not to be biases towards it just because of that.
I remember growing up in Korea , kids used to tease me a lot because I was dark ... I grew up in farm , of course I was darker ... I was a farm girl lol 😂... we need sun 🌞.. being pale is not healthy.....I like how I look 👀...
You're not lying girl, also the reason why Korea is the number one country with the highest Suicide count in the world! Something ain't right over there.
Suicide rates are hard to track due to many factors like the body cant be found, murder-suicide etc etc. But when there's a list of "the top 20 countries with the highest suicide rate", South Korea is always towards the top, but it's not the number 1.
As a korean we think dark skin is bad because in the old days it meant you came from a poor family. Aka any hard labor jobs on the field. While the rich had shade. I’ve lived in the US and Korea and it’s sad to say korea is still racist and I agree with everything u said 🤦🏻♂️
Well some parents “brainwash” their kids and say “oh dark skin people are bad” and they keep them away from foreigners but I don’t think that the whole korea itself is racist.. I currently live in Seoul and as a korean myself yes I do realize that people sometimes look down on others because of their skin.. heck even my friends look down on me sometimes as well because my skin is a little bit more on the tanner side (
@Strawberry Milkshake well I didn't say that you called me poor!!!... I said people (Korean) call dark skinned people "poor"... And added a '?'... Actually I didn't reply to your comment... It's Ryan Chang
I really don't like the obsession with looks and beauty and surgery in Korea. One time I was at a language exchange and had a man I'd never met before telling me which surgery I should get to remove my freckles that he had just gotten. I understand that in their minds its just trying to help but made me feel so self conscious which is a huge issue for me already.
I'm sorry to hear that happened >-< I understand insecurity due to bullies or other but I hope you know freckles are beautiful and some people draw them on with makeup or even get it tatted! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and hopefully one day you will be your ideal perception of beauty 🎶
1) hiyerashy 2)fashion (if something is trend everyone buys it) 3) how important looks are, teenagers have lack of self love to their body image 4) racism colorism 5) sociaty gives more value to men 6) everyone minds their own business 7) bad dirty air
My cousin lives in Seoul, and she always told me about the stuff that you talked about in this video and, about how her neighbours don't say ''hello'' back on the elevator even tho they literally see each other at least once a day and she was shocked about that since, in France, we could be on the streets saying ''bonjour'' to random people passing by and smiling to others often.
Totally right. I live here in US but I went to korean grocery once and the lady who work there scan me from head to toe and said” you are beautiful, but if you get rid of the moles and have double eyelid surgery, you’d be more prettier” 🤨 I told her that I like my moles and I have no concern of my appearance and just left.
Racism and colourrism is something I'm afraid of when I think of visiting Korea😭😭😭 Mom I'm famous 😭🌸 Korea is a great country and I would love to visit it someday and I know with time people will eventually start to accept everyone!! But u know it's ok, really!! Even if 2 out of every 20 people accept me.. it's all worth it. And I'm sure many more will soon enough 😊😊😊😊🌺
I am a Korean and I strongly agree with all of your points. It is actually the reason why I decided to come back to USA ( I came to USA when I was 14 years old and went back to Korea after 10 years for about 2 years) and not continue to live in Korea. I just love how people in USA say hello to each other smiling every day every where even though they don't know each other. And yes, people judge each other with looks as well but also there are many people who recognize how beautiful every single person is in their own form. And all other points you have made, the are all true and I am very very sad about that.
Hii i am from india...i was planning to live in korea after my graduation and earn there cause i really like that..but now i am a bit disappointed After knowing these all things and reading comments...should i go there...or not..cause i am not used to strange behaviours...i like to enjoy and live in a society...plz reply
@@tanushreesingh7557 same i don't know if i should go or no but the thing is that i very probably wouldn't survive there because Korea is very homophobic and so different
Last year when I visited Korea I went to a club in hongdae and there was this girl wearing a bodycon dress and a chewing gum was stuck at her butt . Lots of girls saw ryt no one told her . I went up straight and started removing it for her . She seemed shocked and embarrassed at first but later she kept thanking me and ten even before leaving the club she hugged me and gave me chewing gums haha . 😄
I'm studying at university in China, and we always joke that you can instantly tell who the Korean students are because they are all wearing the same thing.
big nose Before you call someone stupid you should inform yourself, because you don’t have to wear a uniform in university so her statement is accurate.
@@bignose5843 Yes because only the Korean students are forced to wear uniforms at Fudan university..... You do realise University is not the same as high school right?
Ive visited Korea a few times and I love it every single time. As a tourist, honestly I love the friendliness that I experienced there. I have no complaints.
I love it! I’ve lived in Korea for almost 3 years and I agree with you 100%! I think one of the most shocking experiences I had was just recently when I attended the expat fair in Coex. People from plastic surgery offices approached me to ask if I was interested in plastic surgery. In America, most people would be extremely offended if you approached them to offer them plastic surgery. At least wait until a potential customer approaches you haha.
Yeah ikr. I love morena skin because I'm a really lighter shade from the usual Filipinos because I'm mixed. People here are really beautiful and handsome in their own ways.
Hi i am korean. After seeing your video. I can't disagree with you sadly. But I think korean knows about these faults we got and I believe it will be changed eventually. I hope people who wants to come korea to know there are many good aspects of korea as well. Thank you for your honest opinion :)
All the countries and all the people in this world have defects, this is normal, there is no complete person .... All people have a bad side and a good side 😊
The plastic surgery and vanity really scare me. I understand that everyone has had a struggle with beauty but I don't like that plastic surgery is always recommended to make certain groups of people feel better. Surgery is a big thing no matter how "minor" a procedure may seem. I know this sounds so cliché but the older you get, you really learn to love and cherish the skin you're in. I wish they would teach kids that instead of telling them to run to the surgeons any chance they get. "Getting double eyelids will give you more opportunities..." it just sounds like a sad insentive. You get ahead by covering up or changing who you were meant to be. It's so sad :/
EnergyAura - Music don't keep pasting this lame ans everywhere! . U are one of the people propagating this tradition of self hate and plastic surgery being the fix . Just stop . Change!!
lmao it's amusing how you choose a scenario where someone has a disability, that would be fixed with a surgery or transplant, not plastic surgery. And plastic surgery is dumb in itself, fixing whatever you think is flawed with plastic to be more "attractive"
Well not all procedures would classify as a disability but would still be considered cosmetic. For example, if you were born with an eyelid that was droopy compared to the other and you wanted to get that evened out. I don't think there's anything wrong with someone wanting to make themselves more symmetrical. If one eye gets to be that way, why shouldn't the other? And sometimes peoples looks don't disable their functioning ability but still make life very hard for them. They just want to look normal, and when I say this I am mostly referring to people who have been disfigured and have benefited from some plastic surgery procedures. You shouldn't just brand plastic surgery as a whole as dumb when it has it's uses. It's all a case by case basis.
uh...ok but have you considered having a crippling disability vs having something so normal and natural as a monolid are two completely different things like?
Koreans really do give more value to men ;-; Like the lady that lives one floor below me came to tell me that I walk to loud and I said that I was gonna be more careful and like a week later she came back to say the same thing. I told her that I don’t even jump around or anything and I was walking as quietly as I could but that it was also that the floors/building was to blame but she kept coming back again and again and then I had to get one of my guy friends to tell her that and then she stopped coming. She even agreed with him about the building/floor being to blame ;-;
Madison lee yeah it did :( i have nothing against the lady or hate her either but like it is really belittling as a person and obviously more as a woman.
As a Korean, I totally agree with your points. At least, I think focus on appearance, racism, and sexism is changing in a positive direction, but maybe still too slow. I am a little sad about the last one where you mentioned that people don't look out for each other. When I was young, 15-20 years ago, I have seen people interfere to help. But, over the years, I think there were many cases where people tried to help and ended up in trouble. So, people started to mind their own business more and ignore such situations, especially related to fights that appear to be happening between couples. I do feel Americans are less hesitant to walk up and ask if everything is okay in such situation. I hope this can change in Korea as well.
Thanks for explaining this (people tried to help and got in trouble) I am from a large city in the United States and have often felt like people mind their own business as well. However, some parts of the country do look out for each other. Problems everywhere.
Im a filipino dude. But i hate korea because kpop is gay. One stupid thing is that filipinos love koreans because of kdramas and music and the looks. But they didn't realize that koreans have bad personalities. Most Filipinos never know that Koreans look and think that filipinos are poor and slave. Plastic surgery..
Not trying to bash my mom but she was raised in Korea and for me when I was growing up she ALWAYS used to tell me to stay inside on hot days because she didn’t want me to get too dark
The students here that came from Korea(specifically the girls) use umbrellas when the sun is out, even if it's not raining. They really don't like the sun.
Whitney Titus idk where people get this idea that alot of east asians are pale, I've lived in Korea and Japan for 8 years and most of the time this "paleness" is from bleaching skin and staying out of the sun. Not saying that there aren't the few actually really pale people but like 95% of the population have some sort of yellow undertone. But most like to use whitening lotions and use super white foundation. If they spent an adequate amount of time outside in the sun (with sunblock because it is necessary for all people and races) there actual skin tone will come out (i know skin tones change from season to season)
I went to Korea last year and I was there for a week. Everything you said was true. I'm glad I didn't get a tour agency and just went backpacking. People were asking me where I came from or what my ethnicity is-- but coming from the Philippines I guess it disappoints them. I buy for food at the amusement park, this lady hated to serve me, she was aggressively putting on the food I picked on the tray and didn't even wait for me if I had anything to add. Whenever I went out people would check on my clothes, or I would hear them saying "oh pilipino pilipino" while whispering to others and giving me the side eye. People were also pushing one another at the escalator, and yes, old people don't really care. I was shocked when an old man pushed me and another without saying sorry or like a nod or wtv. Color too, I came there slightly tanned. They would stare head to toe. Basically, I felt like a nobody in Korea. I love kpop and kdrama, but nami island and etc ain't enough to make me go back. The food is exquisite. Street food the best. Also kpop merch is cheaper.
An old man pushed you?.... This is why I'm about to regret going to Korea cuz I will really beat some old people up. Like seriously....ma'am you're about to die in like a year do not disrespect me
The things we see in kdrama doesn't quite exist in real, getting judged, racism, plastic surgery is a common thing in Korea. I'm half Japanese so I was judged ALOT, old people wouldn't like me and talk bad on my face. It was a tough time for me to stay there lol... :'(
And you are actually just half-japanese meaning you might look a little different but not entirely. Imagine people who look entirely different. God forbid i go there.
Yeah, it's quite sad. The older generation in Korea kind of hate the Japanese because of what happened between the two countries in the past when Korea was under Japanese rule, which I guess makes their hatred understandable, but it certainly doesn't justify their prejudice (especially since the younger generations of Japan aren't even responsible for what happened). And they tend to be very racist towards Southeast Asians too, I've noticed.
Some of Koreans younger people hates Japanese because they have been brain washed by their older people, But Japanese people are WAY more welcoming and polite towards them. I think Koreans should move on and leave the past in the past :/
The people not stepping in thing is a human phenomenon. In the early 1900s a woman in New York City was stabbed to death in her apartment complex. All of her neighbors could hear and see what was going on. Everyone thought "Oh someone else will do something," and they all ending up doing nothing. Really it's just up to us to choose to be the one to care enough to do something. Thank you for this video! I am moving to Korea in a few days, so I'm doing as much research as I can :D
you’re right, but I think we should acknowledge the 100+ years difference among the events. There are gonna be people who don’t do anything in any part of the world, but I think what she meant was that if the same situation(s) had happened in other places she’s familiar with, like her home country, due to cultural differences, someone would’ve probably done something instead of just pretending like nothing was going on.
THIS. People in my country are hella nosy but if they see something happening no one will step in unless someone else does. I always try to step in unless it could be dangerous, then I just call the cops.
20 seconds in and I already love this girl!! xD The die-hard fans who would downvote this video are people with a delusional image of s.korea, the reality is far from being as perfect as you see in the dramas.
I can relate to your first concern! I'm a Filipina and I went to Korea for a one week vacation and I was shocked at how older people (especially men) push me in the subway station because they want to take the escalator first or they want to ride the train first. Ugh. I'm not used to that, I'm sorry! In my country, even a kid knows how to say, "excuse me" or "i'm sorry" if they unintentionally bumped into someone. :(
There was a pit stop to Korea and I was with my aunt who was pretty old. So she had to use a wheel chair. When we got there, they were going to give us a ride to our gate, but instead of the elderly going first. Koreans/middle age people got in first. Ang familia ko Filipino. Tagalog isn't my first language so I'm not fluent (I can understand it 80% tho)
@@ichi8017 she didnt said anything that the philippines is much better that korea. She was just talking about a particular thing/trait that she didnt like about korea. Dont generalize it. Chill bruh.
I don’t care about hierarchy. I was raised in Cuba, where respect is earned and kids are allowed to have their own opinions as much as adults -one of the few good things about living there.. cuz communism sucks. My mom and dad taught me to respect people in general, not just my elders. I don’t particularly care if you’re 50, if you disrespect me, I don’t need to deal with you
wow i am a highschool student in Korea born and raised, and everything in this video is sooooooo TRUE. especially the appearance thing everyone is so obsessed with their appearance and their weights even they look so nice and skinny. Koreans are reaaaaaaaaaally crazy even if when same Korean sees them
it really comes beautiful to me how korean people looks. With their mono lid eyes, their noses, hairs etc overall shape of their faces.. they are just beautiful as they are.
I think the way of our natural beauty is the best...But I don't care how another nations think about own their beauty..Because their society has own their way.... So please something say positively.... eventhough these all are true
hey nat! i'm a teacher in namyangju and i share similar views about what i find unsavory about life in korea. i had an experience with my noisy ahjussi neighbors. it was 1am in the morning and they were yelling back and forth in a regular conversation. it definitely woke me up and so i just knocked against the wall just to give them a heads up. what followed was a huge thud. it was like they were opening a door to hit our shared wall and it kept going on followed by laughter on their end. it wasn't until they heard my boyfriend yell back that they stopped. it was this experience that made me to frustrated to know that they see me less because i am a woman. since then i've dug daggers when we make eye contact; they shrink down each time. but i doubt that has changed their level of respect for me. for me, i also dislike how there is a lack of public trash bins in the cities. i get that it's supposed to push people to be more thoughtful about their trash disposal, but from what seoul looks like i think the lack of bins just leads to increased littering. i dislike how mental disabilities are ignored or not taken seriously. i dislike how the school system prioritizes finding the right answer as oppose to being creative in problem solving. i dislike how common it is for foreigners to be thrown under the bus for something they didn't do but rather tried to report koreans of doing (i.e., domestic abuses, sexual harassment). oh, and i dislike how christmas is a couple holiday! but that aside, there is so much to enjoy about korean culture. i would not let the cons ruin the experience. i think being able to recognize these things helps me adapt. as a teacher, these things also make me sensitive to my students but also inspired to be a good example, introduce different ideas and perspectives to them. we might not be able to change aspects of a culture but we don't necessarily have to perpetuate it in example.
Bangtan is lifeu Yes you are. If you were Korean you’ll be the same person no matter what and it doesn’t make you more beautiful to be that race. (Not saying Koreans are beautiful but they’re. Everyone’s race is.) Oh and Asians actually want to be us you know? Blonde hair, curly hair, skin color, freckles. They all want we have so be thankful what you have.
I totally agree with u! Im married to a korean and my partner criticizes me sometimes for my look and the way I dress up. But, I always say that Im not korean and I have my own style. You can say Im stubborn, but with my age right now, I prefer simple, natural and classic one.
Girl I agree with alot of it. The blatant colorist and size discrimination, sexism, terrible "먹벌" (eat and throw) dating system, disregard for general humanity of people... is just sickening. If you watch this drama called "Save Me" you can see a little bit of the social, political, and religious corruption that happens here. Its not ur flowery oppa saranghae drama. its an attack on your morals and your soul. But its a good drama because it forces you to think about society and its problems and your own place in all the craziness. Anyway, long comment. I have so much to say about all this stuff too. I love korea and theres so much i dislike about it simultaneously. @kaiaau_
'Live' is also a really good drama that demonstrates how terrible Korea can be. Out of all the K-Drama's i've seen i feel like its among the more realistic depictions of Korea and the looks are so much more realistic.
So true😪😂 What I don't like about the beauty standard is the white skin😂 I don't like fair skin, whats so pretty about it?? Lol But oh well this is my opinion (don't mean to people who born with white skin ok? I meant to them, trying to get white skin so bad🙈😂)
exolove Well, I am extremely pale and can't get a tan even if I want to. Not everybody likes it, it's your opinion afterall. But I felt sad reading your comment. Afterall, I'm born with it, what should I do about it? :D
but just want to let u know that in my eye everybody is beautiful no matter what and korea is just a lil racist and that's disrespectful but oh well just remember that not all Korean was like that
This video points out the real problems in Korea. Colourism is most impressive because I never recognize that can be as some kind of discrimination upon any kind of darkness in skin! I think I was too lack of conscious about those things,,, this contents really great
Someone made one joke about kpop stars on Instagram and the koreaboos went nuts about racism. Like don’t pretend that Korea doesn’t discriminate against darker tones. Like Korea is beautiful but Koreaboos praise one of the xenophobic cultures out there.
and Malaysia too.. like everyone is obsessed consuming many whitening drinks, pills to bleach their skin... this stereotype that white skin is superior, and more beautiful need to stop.. why God bother to create humans in many shape and colour if human decide to generalise beauty just by one standard??
Amber Sillouette it’s not they don’t like their skin like every country India and Pakistan have a beauty standard which is not common in the community for example in Japan or China they all do want to have double eyelid and are obsessed with it the reason is very simple it is because they it is not represented in general in the community or in Germany it is nowadays so important to have a great body like most mexican people have but it is also not represented in the community but many girls want to achieve that look..
You are so right. I came to Korea to see what was so good, and I was very disappointed. Their expectancy is very high. As another Asian, I was Tan, i had hairy legs, a flat nose, and a square face and a small stain on my shirt from the previous day. In America, if I wore the same shirt, no body would have ever cared. Honestly, what they said about me was even shocking. I got THE LOOK and the STARE. When I got to the train, people were giving me tons of room because they thought that something was wrong with me. Everyone looked so sad and angry for some reason. And my whole trip was not like any other youtubers mentioned. I felt threatened and self conscious wherever I went! Over all, my first time coming to Korea was very sad and DEPRESSING. NEVER had i been to a country that had made such a bad impact on my life. Air quality was SUPER BAD TOO. I remember that in the three days of not vacuuming, there were dirt/dust everywhere.
YESEUL예슬 Ikr,since I have a dark skin and black frizzy hair I know that I can be a victim of racism and thats why I never compliment ppl abt looks like if I went to Korea As I now heard about the racism I would cry whenever ppl said this and that as I am a very sensitive person and I always worry about what ppl say about me and take it seriously..
I have been in Korea for four years and I have 2 more years to finish my study!! And ALL you said were true I agree with you 100%! And also I HATE HAAAAATE when korean boys thinks that they can have se* with all foreign girls! They just think about hook up when they meet foreign girls ! Do not meet Korean boys in clubs, meeting apps, street, internet ... Even boys that I met in school were the same(not just me all my friends had same experience)!!!! Actually it's hard to make Korean friends so foreigners (same as me before) are starting to use meeting apps or other internet stuff or even going to clubs! FOR MEETING KOREAN PEOPLE DO NOT DO THAT ! If you wanna go club just go with your friends and enjoy dancing with them***sorry for my poor English ***
Hey, I agree with you. But the thing is not because of they are Korean guy. I mean, I'm studying in Europe and I have same experiences as well. Local people might think just being foreigner is like easy life, easy going (about sex), less responsibility, whatever. So don't mad at Korean guys. But ya I totally understand that is hard to build local social if you are foreigner in any country.
I totally agree on this one i use an app and i find it really hard to make friends because most are just looking for sex or nudes. One time my mom borrowed my phone and this guy just suddenly texted me “I want to see your nudes” I freaked out because my mom read it.
@ Clearly some want to look like something other than how they were born, or there would be no point in bodily modification. One could say some Koreans want to look like A or the number 3 or White people, but the point is the same, the name doesn't matter. I'm ghostly White and already had cheekbones and avoid the Sun because it kills life through radiation. I went through a phase when I was much younger and I did Mystic spray tan, but when I got older I realized there was no point in it, because there are at least as many people who don't care for tans as those who do. Spray tanning was temporary; plastic surgery can only be changed through more surgery, and tissue destruction and scarring result, so it is a door that can never be entirely closed. Some Koreans are opening a door that can't be closed. Since Korean society is so utterly conformist, the standard becomes the rule, and the rule is look like something other than how you were born because other people are doing it. Since people getting lid surgery are changing their features to resemble White people, it's reasonable to think that the standard is modeled after another race that looks like the standard.
I'd advise anyone to live in a country past the honeymoon period (and actually pay attention rather than get caught up in feeling exceptional) to really get the foreigner experience. I've lived in Japan for years and my eyes are wide open. Now it's just my second home that I still enjoy but gets on my nerves a lot. 😒 I COMPLETELY ignore Japanese beauty standards (which is basically Japanese or Caucasian aesthetics) and do me, so I always feel confident and own myself.
I'm an Indian and I planning to move to Korea I can accept whatever flaws it has but I'm really scared of the racism in Korea..being a citizen of an equatorial country it's natural for the Indians to have a brown skin not that dark though..is the youngsters over their also have same thinking and believes?
Totally agree with you in some points: 1 - Old people have no respect, they think they can be rude or do whatever they want because they are old. 2 - Trends are followed religiously and people really like to look alike, which is pretty weird in a world where originality is becoming popular. 3 - There are a lot of racist koreans but usually the ones that go abroad to study or work are more open minded and "well behaved". Colorism though, comes from the kings' time and it will be very hard to change since it's been an association between being porcelain white and being rich/having high status. Only the working class would stay out in the sun and get a tan, so having a tan became a sign of lower status. 4 - Koreans don't really interact with strangers, I think they find it weird, but if something strange happens I think they don't do much because it might go wrong on their side, they're probably afraid to get in trouble.
@@sqfzerzefsdf If you move there, you will probably do that because of a job I assume, unless you are rich and just live without a job. If you have a job you'll meet your coworkers. If not, some Koreans might approach you because you're foreign (unless you're east Asian and blend well with Koreans).
Yea... Korea isn't what you expect. And 1 year isn't enough to really get to know and feel how Korea treats us foreigners... And it is different experience for different races.
Omg this makes me so sad. I just want to hug all Korean people and let them know they are beautiful just the way they are. Here in the US they are some beauty standards too but if you ignore them, you can live a happy and fulfilling life being yourself and looking like whatever.
I feel the same. If there’s an organization in Korea that helps with girls’ self-esteem or something I would love to go there to help with it. I had a hard time with my looks here in America from all the beauty media, but it’s so ridiculously more overblown in S. Korea.
Wanted to visit Korea once for different interests. Then things came to light and I decided directly against it. It's more appearance than substance. I always thought racism was only extreme in our country. What I unfortunately had to learn in News from Korea has disappointed me until today. Xenophobia, corruption and misogyny is a dangerous mix. I cannot and will not approve of such things. Maybe Korea needs another 25 years to be socially acceptable. The only thing Korea can - still - show is the K-pop industry. But Amber has already told us a lot about it. Today I believe: "A fake world with a touch of lies can never be sustained!" The house of cards will collapse.
So you know how they say that Koreans don't like foreigners there because the crime rates will go up but I just thought about something do you think that the crime rate aren't high in korea because nobody doesn't anything when they see crimes happening so if stuff is happening and ppl just walk by maybe that's why the crime rates is so low because it's not getting reported because everyone ignores when they see something bad happening
Actually, Korea does have low crime rates. Still, there is some truth about the reluctance to report problems for reasons of being associated with the problem but that is another issue as well. The statistical distribution of the crimes you see in Korea is different than the ones you see in other countries. You can leave your possessions unattended and not have to worry about whether it is going to get stolen for the most part. Violence is not common unless done in a fit of rage and is more probable in the domestic or private environment than the public, so walking alone at night is comparably much safer in Korea than in most parts of the world. Many are still caught up by superficial beauty standards but there are many who are getting beyond that. Spitting on the street is common and is usually done by men, usually smokers, who think it natural to clean out their system, like blowing your nose, only the tissue happens to be the street. Power hierarchy is natural because every Korean has been affected by Confucian values, and men, especially because every able-bodied Korean man, has been in the Korean military for around 2 years. The Korean military, like most militaries, are top down in the power hierarchy. When your superior tells you to jump, you don't ask why but how high. This mindset is brought into Korean companies and organizations, so the very structure of Korean organizations is predicated on a military style of the command chain. That is how it is. For Korean organizations to be like Western organizations, the draft of Korean men into the military for 2 years would need to end.
@@sybaik agreed to all points except the last one. In my opinion, the 2 years in army is still good, considering South Korea may be strengthening their defence for unforseen war that may happen anytime with the North's. Well, I'm just guessing.
sybaik wow 😮 after reading your comment I have nothing but praise and admiration. Most of the statements u made have piqued my interest so I’m going to research further about these topics. Thx 😊
@@heavenVI Yea some Asians like double eyelids. Some people try to get surgery to get them. It's pretty sad because single eyelids and double both look good. Hi Armys 💜
Great video. I completely agree with your list. Every country has it's charms and flaws and Korea is no different. I've never really understood the whole obsession with 15-16 year olds getting plastic surgery and their parents being completely ok with, or even encouraging it. At that age, teenagers have insecurities about their bodies and features and are not hesitant to want a quick fix. Your features (monolids, hair color, face shape, jawline, skin color, etc.) make you you and you learn to love yourself, but I feel like if you're quick to change your appearance with something as drastic as surgery, you don't really get to do that. So my question is this: what happens when your natural features become/are socially considered beautiful again?
Yes, I completely agree. Working with middle school aged students, I see the destruction of self image on a daily bases. Student critical amongst themselves and even their peers. It is that age where you start recognizing your flaws, but with the lax ideas about plastic surgery, changing what you don't like is normalized. When natural features are in, there will definitely be a plastic surgery solution for that.
EnergyAura - Music I don’t think you got the message. Yes it’s a cultural thing in Korea but there do quick to change themselves to fit in the norm of society. They change a lot aspects of themselves and all there flaws. She not disrespecting there culture or putting it down she is just saying that everyone is made natural beautiful and the should more embrace the flaws which makes them who they are. And to even throw such a curve ball in your claim about the child with a disability is so ignorant. They are 2 completely different situations. Have a good day 🙃
Totally agree with you. I'm glad that I wasn't interested in Kpop at the time or....I don't want to imagine what will happen. Fortunately, my parents doesn't like plastic surgery anyway, so I'm grateful for that too.
@EnergyAura - Music wow.. yeah you made a good point in your example when you said one was a disorder that was physically making it hard for the child to walk .. when the other was just based on a preference. I wish you really understood the depth of the information you just aired. It's a very sad thing when a lot of people are taught to hate certain features that they're born with just because it doesn't fit in with societal beauty standards. Our self esteem is so fragile at a young age that we should be working on building self love instead of people promoting making drastic changes to our appearances that haven't even had a chance to grow into yet.. the fact that a lot of people may share the same viewpoint as you is disappointing to me.
Cyx3withlove you can watch My Id is Gangnam beauty Drama....the issue is plastic surgery in young people and the writers try to teach young people to love themselves. In the other hand BTS band boy is trying to do the same with his music. So , is a step forward, I think, in order to decrease suicide incidents in young people.
Another thing is that so many girls want to marry their idols in korea but they have no idea that its not going to be a regular equal marriage like overseas. Rather a burden to the soul. The husband will forever be a guest in your house even though you are married. You serve him, you serve his parents, the korean moms will likely verbally abuse you into being like her and train you to become the perfect wife. If the mother doesn't want HEr SON to have anymore children, she will secretly tell YOU to cut/ tie up your tubes, not HER SON, for that is her baby, she doesn't want him to be touched. If she finds out the wife told him to tie his tubes and he did, she will be upset with you that you "made her son alter his body". If you live with your parents in laws house, as the housewife, you don't just wash *only your toilet*, only your side of the house that you only walk and breathe in, that you use with your husband. You are part of the family, you act like it or begin to be treated like a selfish and ignorant wench. You now clean your brother in laws, your parents/sister in laws, yours and your husband. You now clean every persons toilet, every bed room, and every car, you prepare every lunch (to-go as well), breakfast, dinner, birthday, anniversary, you "voluntarily" gather up clothes from each bedroom without them "having to ask", wash, fold and put away everyone's laundry, you do everybodies dishes, you go food-shopping, you take the dog for a walk, you treat your son-I mean husband with sovereignty and servanthood, you raise his children and let him drink with his friends because your mother in law says he is working hard at the family's Raman noodle shop, working all day pushing buttons at the cash register and her dearest son needs a break. You do not spend time with him when he comes back home, that is her time with her son! You take your husbands and his brothers/ sisters/ parents socks from the table when they take it off. You make food from scratch and you quit your job to become apart of the family business that probably makes less money than you. Your part in this "family business" will be becoming a waiting housewife and making food whenever a family member comes into the kitchen and demands it of you. No, they will not eat what you've already prepared, or any left overs. You will cook it fresh and especially for them, hence, "whatever they demand of you, you will cook it". You will live with your parents in law if your married to the first son. Bright side is, you will become a five star professional chef and will be really fast at cooking food from all the verbal abuse and practise. If you watch the dramas and find the mother in law to be evil or even concerning ex wifes refusing to divorce their husband and his lover living in the same house as them. This is not exaggerating, they are just showing the womans reaction and feeling when she is married to a korean household, something that she usually holds back (you're married to his family, not just the husband). Divorce is worse than murder in Korea, if the woman divorces, she becomes nothing- no man will take her or marry her- she's now has no power since the man divorced her, its a warning to others around her that she does not make a good wife. Even if she divorced you, his mother will call you ego bruised after its finalized, "Remember, My son gave you the boot, you did not boot him!".. Many wives will proudly say how her husband doesn't or cannot drink and women will gasp in surprise. Its a good thing if the korean husband doesn't, you probs know why. Wives also dont like their mother in law because there is a pride war between them; who can take care of the husband/son better. Older Women from korea come to north america starting a new life and purposely find good partners; people who have no culture nor tradition attached to them. Hilariously, when they marry to a non korean, they still continue serving him like they would in korea and the north american husbands get discouraged and insulted because they're'nt "mother and son" (which some of them online express is what it feels like), they want a equal partner, a wife -not a mommy. So when oriental men here say that asian girls dont want asian boys, they only want white/anyotherbutoriental men. Its not because of looks, its because they dont want to be tied down to tradition, they want a normal life and equal marriage where hierarchy is absent. Another awful part is that they pick and choose and confuse what is tradition and whats not based off their convenience. Example: They wont take care of their parents in the same household because they claim they are no longer "traditional", even when they know their moms are prostituting themselves in their old age. At the same time the Korean wife will maintain traditionalism (things that aren't necessary; a showcase) for her expectant husband, making sure he is happy but hypocritically not wondering where her husbands parents are which is traditionally "her duty". North Americans, whatever the race, know to take care of our parents out of love, we dont see it as a burden or tradition. Koreans telling their parents how they arent "traditional" anymore is an excuse because they dont want to spend money on them, its about them not loving their parents, not about "No longer traditional". Even when a woman is being considerate towards her husband, they dont call her courteous or kind or considerate, they talk as if you shouldn't applaud a bird for flying, they say she is a "traditional wife", its the way shes suppose to be. Same thing when she gets married, its not a big deal, a wife is what she supposed to be, "dont applaud a machine for turning on".
;) Aw yeah! Of course, of course! I hear you. But Im assuming you mean people who are born after 1995 when you say younger gen. haha! I can also agree with the fact that present day in- laws probably dont want to pass down the bad treatment that they received from their own in-laws. They understand the burden of being on the other end of the rod as a korean wife. Thats great! ;D However, the old generation is still quite young! It ranges today from age 28 (1990) to people who are in their 50's (1965) and marrying women in their 30's (1980)! I've even caught korean kpop boys showing their prince like roots, talking about marriage and what they expect from it (family business, woman taking care of his parents etc,). Majority of Korean women who comes to north america marry non-conformist men and have exact same stories as if they've all married the same korean man and I recently discovered Hello Counselor as well and its so similar! So by their stories, you can tell if this prince like tradition is still being passed through the younger boys and gen.!
Yeah, This has nothing to do with the woman spoiling the man and "doing everything", that's actually quite normal and kinda naturalised/expected everywhere! I was talking about "traditional traditional full family korean households" that are still raw today in korea, where the man gets praised for "marrying" as his entire family now benefits off of his wife, now housewife. Korean women do not premeditate that their husbands shall do these things for them the way the hierarchy is already placed, they themselves prepare. If the son "doing everything", does happen, its by his own will with perhaps regret and burden and entitlement later, for he "doesn't have to" spoil his wife or her family. As well as, no one can do it the way explained above, unconditionally unless they have continuous fire up their arse like a good ol' mother in law or Gods love and HIS long suffering inside of them! ;D In a traditional family that still takes place with men who are born 1990 and up, taking care of the entire family is her natural job and placement when she gets married, not the mans or so he will be taught depending on if his family is passing down those korean roots. These are the men who are raised prince like, pre-wired by the vocal help of his mother that they are a forever guest in their own house. Momma does everything for him, when he gets married. Learns that the wife should take over for his entire family and his momma gets to rest. He will look for this in a girlfriend, or expect it after he is married and compare his wife to his mom. He's not spoiled rather the entire family is "naturally entitled" on behalf of the son marrying her. The talk between the mother in law and wife about how the son will be taken care of is a pride thing that comes from his mom. (I swear these moms will marry the son if they could. They've invested so much in their husbands family. She feels like her son is the only one who takes care of her, this happening through his wife, of course! So they want as much control as possible over the daughter in law; very jealous!) Its very intense haha. Cheers! :D Thanks for talking! ruclips.net/video/jRdA1QZG3Is/видео.html

Qianna Jay seriously I already need to work on patience in America America but if I wanna visit Korea I gotta know how to hold my tongue when someone acting like they're the king or queen of the world bc they lived for 1,00 years or sum
Qianna Jay Definitely because if someone did that to me my first reaction would be excuse me but move yourself to the back of the line before we have a problem😂😂
I have never been able to let people cut me in line cause that’s how I was raised. I just cut back in front of the mofo and say not a word about it, they usually get the memo. 😂😂😂
It’s ridiculous someone has to stay in one specific place because they fit in that society better. If I wanna move to Brazil I am, if I wanna move to China I will and I’m gonna be myself and enjoy my life ♥️
I agree. Understanding and learning others cultural norms is part of traveling and moving somewhere else. Yes, it will be different. Korea is a budding democracy and changing everyday. Things change. Go with the flow when traveling but be aware. This was such a great video as it was “real”.
That is awful. Korea is kind of a bit cold country but people make it sound like a dreamland . From what I've heard , i used to think people don't mind their own business in Korea like they usually come up to u n compliment u if u look good n stuff but this vid kinda opened my eyes...... Korea isn't as interesting as I thought it was....
Rosa Pink oh I don’t think that’s what we say love. Let’s not call the whole country itself awful sometimes its just people. And you do know the difference between north and south korea right?
This honestly saddens me. Not in a bad way. I'm glad you're telling us but goodness. And I keep telling people that African Americans are NOT THE ONLY RACE that has the colorism. A friend of mine told me about how bleaching the skin is what they do. I know they do the contact lenses too. It's really interesting so they say to really pay attention to the ingredients in skin care.
@@aszosh colored contact lenses i think... like our asians have brown eyes and some of us like different color eyes like blue-gray color so they usually wear colored lenses..

You put it as it is. I came from Korea and when I go back to Korea, the same things bother me as well to a greater or lesser extent. Just to add to what you mentioned, the hierarchy based on age and gender is based on the Confucius values - however twisted they may be. Image consciousness and 'mind your own business' attitude, I find, are more recent phenomena with the rise of capitalism and insane competition - espceially after the Korean financial crisis in 1997. Korea used to be a community- based society, and what we call 정 was easy to find. I miss my country back in the days (when I was a kid). They change so fast.
Nat, I've lived here for a while and I would say you are right on about almost everything. The one thing I would say is that although Koreans do tend to mind their own business I've had plenty of instances of Koreans (mostly women) extending kindness to me when I needed it. It helps for them to see you as part of the '우리' or collective if you speak a little Korean as well.
The first part about Age and Status, it isn't just Korea. It's an Asian thing, most of us don't feel disrespected. Not saying it's okay but just saying that we're so used to this that this is just the norm to us. Not just Asian, Middle East, Africa etc. It's normal there too. It's just our culture.
I mean, usually they don’t just cut in abruptly, we mostly offer our positions and stuff. Once in a blue moon will they cut in, and yeah, we’re use to it.
@@gumballwatterson6101 Malaysian here, if the older person does something rude..Like suddenly cutting queue when they know that's not the end of the line I'll definitely say something..I mean if you wanna cut the line/in the hurry or something..tell me not rudely cut queue like that. But truthfully Malaysian older generation are not as bad as Korean, most of them abide to social rules. I have actually never experience older people cutting queue or do something rude just because there are older and entitled.
@@krystalsheon142 yeah, thats true.. Our older generation dont do that thing, but my point here is a hierarchy does exist where the gap between older and younger people is exist, its true that in this video korea also does have the thing, but its much severe in there compared to Malaysia. We do respect older people here, it's already our culture. Same thing happened in Korea but the situation is slightly different.
The korean kids at my school are so racist though. Like they're foreign exchange and when they got here they liked the white kids and if anyone else of color (we have some other exchanges from thai) they'll tell them their skin is ugly. i was in disbelief and like wow that's how y'all do it in korean huh?
These are all very valid points anyone thinking of living in Korea someday should take into consideration. I visited last year but only for 10 days so to me, it was all just fun, but I know that these situations will most likely happen if I live there long term. Also, you look so pretty in the video!! Love the hair and sweater ❤️
I had an amazing time there when I went.

also beethoven virus, that kdrama showed me how iran and korea are same in most aspects.

Freckles are beautiful 😍. I wish.
Omg it was so rude of him, a situation like that would have made me soooo angry, i love my feckles
freckles are beautiful, every thing in you makes you unique, so accept all your unique qualities and believe that you are pretty the way you are ❤

Korean men never fixed
I'm African American and not going to lie, the first time I heard double eyelids, I was like what in the hell is that?
uh...ok but have you considered having a crippling disability vs having something so normal and natural as a monolid are two completely different things like?
Koreans really do give more value to men ;-;
Like the lady that lives one floor below me came to tell me that I walk to loud and I said that I was gonna be more careful and like a week later she came back to say the same thing. I told her that I don’t even jump around or anything and I was walking as quietly as I could but that it was also that the floors/building was to blame but she kept coming back again and again and then I had to get one of my guy friends to tell her that and then she stopped coming. She even agreed with him about the building/floor being to blame ;-;

Tanned Asians are cute though 🤧
Whitney Titus idk where people get this idea that alot of east asians are pale, I've lived in Korea and Japan for 8 years and most of the time this "paleness" is from bleaching skin and staying out of the sun. Not saying that there aren't the few actually really pale people but like 95% of the population have some sort of yellow undertone. But most like to use whitening lotions and use super white foundation. If they spent an adequate amount of time outside in the sun (with sunblock because it is necessary for all people and races) there actual skin tone will come out (i know skin tones change from season to season)

And you are actually just half-japanese meaning you might look a little different but not entirely. Imagine people who look entirely different.

Gamer Gurl likes gaming if I was spoken bad to I will loss it I might even forget I was supposed to respect my elders
Same here but as y'know I'm Japanese and if I disrespect them they will get a chance to hate on us more.
DinaSoaring i studied this for a psychology course
you’re right, but I think we should acknowledge the 100+ years difference among the events.
I always try to step in unless it could be dangerous, then I just call the cops.

hey nat! i'm a teacher in namyangju and i share similar views about what i find unsavory about life in korea.
i had an experience with my noisy ahjussi neighbors. it was 1am in the morning and they were yelling back and forth in a regular conversation. it definitely woke me up and so i just knocked against the wall just to give them a heads up. what followed was a huge thud. it was like they were opening a door to hit our shared wall and it kept going on followed by laughter on their end. it wasn't until they heard my boyfriend yell back that they stopped. it was this experience that made me to frustrated to know that they see me less because i am a woman. since then i've dug daggers when we make eye contact; they shrink down each time. but i doubt that has changed their level of respect for me.
for me, i also dislike how there is a lack of public trash bins in the cities. i get that it's supposed to push people to be more thoughtful about their trash disposal, but from what seoul looks like i think the lack of bins just leads to increased littering. i dislike how mental disabilities are ignored or not taken seriously. i dislike how the school system prioritizes finding the right answer as oppose to being creative in problem solving. i dislike how common it is for foreigners to be thrown under the bus for something they didn't do but rather tried to report koreans of doing (i.e., domestic abuses, sexual harassment). oh, and i dislike how christmas is a couple holiday!
but that aside, there is so much to enjoy about korean culture. i would not let the cons ruin the experience. i think being able to recognize these things helps me adapt. as a teacher, these things also make me sensitive to my students but also inspired to be a good example, introduce different ideas and perspectives to them. we might not be able to change aspects of a culture but we don't necessarily have to perpetuate it in example.
Omg that’s exactly like in Japan!!! (especially the Christmas part)
So... I need to have a boyfriend when I'm in South Korea. Gotcha.

Amber Sillouette it’s not they don’t like their skin like every country India and Pakistan have a beauty standard which is not common in the community for example in Japan or China they all do want to have double eyelid and are obsessed with it the reason is very simple it is because they it is not represented in general in the community or in Germany it is nowadays so important to have a great body like most mexican people have but it is also not represented in the community but many girls want to achieve that look..
well same in Sri Lanka, which is a country with almost everyone is having a dark skin, and still obsess over the light skin..
As a Korean I wish Korea could stop racism. To stop this everyone needs to help.

Ikr,since I have a dark skin and black frizzy hair I know that I can be a victim of racism and thats why I never compliment ppl abt looks like if I went to Korea As I now heard about the racism I would cry whenever ppl said this and that as I am a very sensitive person and I always worry about what ppl say about me and take it seriously..
Shima Khodarahmi aw girl you're english is fine. Mine is hmhm, i'm from Germany

You just killed my korean dream 😑😑 I'm still going though...... your English wasn't bad lol I didn't notice until you said it
I totally agree on this one i use an app and i find it really hard to make friends because most are just looking for sex or nudes. One time my mom borrowed my phone and this guy just suddenly texted me “I want to see your nudes” I freaked out because my mom read it.
I’m korean and I totally agree with you.
I like natural Korean eyes. I wish they didn't feel like they have to look like someone else.
right! mono lids are so pretty!
Laffing Disease Love you from Korea!! You are so sweet❤️
Laffing Disease Ik small eyes are pretty why make them bigger gosh
Ikr it looks weird when they make it bigger
I'd advise anyone to live in a country past the honeymoon period (and actually pay attention rather than get caught up in feeling exceptional) to really get the foreigner experience. I've lived in Japan for years and my eyes are wide open. Now it's just my second home that I still enjoy but gets on my nerves a lot. 😒 I COMPLETELY ignore Japanese beauty standards (which is basically Japanese or Caucasian aesthetics) and do me, so I always feel confident and own myself.
I love you and your comment!.
As Korean, who lived in Korea more than 20yrs, yes I agree..
respect your honesty guys
Same here.
Do men have more control really?
Can we all became friends 😭
I'm an Indian and I planning to move to Korea I can accept whatever flaws it has but I'm really scared of the racism in Korea..being a citizen of an equatorial country it's natural for the Indians to have a brown skin not that dark though..is the youngsters over their also have same thinking and believes?

Totally agree with you in some points:
1 - Old people have no respect, they think they can be rude or do whatever they want because they are old.
So if they don't interact with strangers how do they ever get to meet new people? Just from work/school?
@@sqfzerzefsdf They do a "meeting". One of your friends brings one friend to meet you, for example.
@@Maria-bt2hb Ok so lets say you move there and don't know anyone how do you make friends?
@@sqfzerzefsdf If you move there, you will probably do that because of a job I assume, unless you are rich and just live without a job. If you have a job you'll meet your coworkers. Maria Bastos Honestly I think the only way you can make friends is in school or friends of friends....

Korea.

Yes lots of lots of Koreans that not like the threads going on in there country and migrate to the US.
Completely understand. The judgement and pressure here is not really intense.
Today I believe: "A fake world with a touch of lies can never be sustained!"
The house of cards will collapse.

5:15 I teach and that's literally how close kids get to your face to say random ass things
Two things
1.Ur beautiful
2.And interesting
Can you share ur positive experiences in Korea ?
As well as, no one can do it the way explained above, unconditionally unless they have continuous fire up their arse like a good ol' mother in law or Gods love and HIS long suffering inside of them! ;D
In a traditional family that still takes place with men who are born 1990 and up, taking care of the entire family is her natural job and placement when she gets married, not the mans or so he will be taught depending on if his family is passing down those korean roots.
