I really hope they bring back more of Ellen Burstyn for the next season. She was perfect to be Elliot's Mama. Every scene between them is gold and I love how she accepts Olivia in her son and children's lives.
There's not many who can hold their own in a scene with Ellen Burstyn which is one of the many reasons I have such respect for Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hargitay!
Last night I re-watched my favourite Ellen Burstyn movie: The Spitfire Grill. She’s a great actress and I’m glad that she could be in the Law & Order universe.

This episode provided some much needed insight into Stabler many, many seasons in. So amazing this show is still on and these characters are still around to tell their stories.

Olivia really drove to New Jersey to help his partner's daughter.
I'm not bipolar, but have been on medications like lithium for other psychological issues. The research they did to describe what these meds can feel like and how brilliantly Ellen Burstyn played the character really moved me.
Ellen Burstyn is such a fabulous actress, she breaks my heart into a thousand pieces here

I forget I am watching a show when Ellen Burstyn starts crying. I feel like I am sitting in the booth next to Olivia watching a weathered worn woman weep.
Just always felt so sorry for mum as she truly loved n cared for her son n wasn't her fault for being ill instead of son being understand n trying to get his mum help he was too busy being embarrassed

She took the gun, and accidentally shot at her husband, and Elliott (when he was a toddler).

I think because olivia is a beautiful woman and elliot spends a lot of his time with her.

Because every straight male in the world would easily let Mariska Hargitay give them an STD while impregnating her. She was smokin’ hot in her day. Sorry for the poor choice of words.
In one episode Kathy tells Olivia it hurts to know that Elliot like to spend more time with Olivia than with his family.

Both. I think that's the "joke". Cops in the 60s (the time of Elliott's father) were hyper-masculine as a general rule. Used to be a lot of homophobia.

Severe mental illness that she was in denial of; also, she shot a gun in front of Elliot and his father, among other things
Mental illness that she refused to get help from. And it negatively affected his childhood

Every time I watch this episode on tv I am always uncomfortable of seeing those pictures of a younger teenage Elliot stabler. Uncomfortable because of knowing what that little teenager grows into. I’m not going to lie but Elliot Stabler not only annoys me sometimes but I am also afraid of him.

she's bipolar and it was passed down to elliott's eldest daughter kathleen. she got in trouble with the law and refused medicine/therapy so olivia went to stabler's mom since she's also bipolar to talk her into getting help. elliot's mom also got help.

This is *_old._* Just like the entire cast of SVU! They need a refresh!
So because they are older that means it shouldn’t be seen or revisited? Older people shouldn’t be ignored in media. SVU is the most popular law and order section. This coming from a guy who just got into the show 2 yrs ago.
It's more than looks these days... you gotta have talent and people age naturally too.
LOL you should watch the regular Law and Order instead of SVU. Everyone there is new. Just don't watch SVU.
