  • This common problems are based on my own experience with this engine.
    No all CUMMINS ISX engines are going to present all this problems but at least they are going to have one of them.
    This common problems are going to be similar all CUMMINS ISX engines from 2008 and up and all manufacturs: Freightliner Kenworth Volvo Peterbilt international, etc,..
    Cummins ISX engines from 2016 and up are more reliable than older Cummins ISX engines.

    Had 2 Freightliners (02-04)with Detroit engine with over million miles and no mayor engine issues at all, then I decided to trying 2011 Kenworth with Cummins ISX (568k miles) so far oil cooler was gone ($2500 repair) few months after bumm head gasket gone ($5,130 repair) and all made by friends local luckily NOT over the road thanks God!
    My recommendation.... stay away of those reds, unless N14 old school Cummins, I’m trying to swap a 12.7L 60 series Detroit on my kenworth so dumping ISX to junkyard where is right place for them to be...lol
    Thanks for the video 👍

      Hi Edwin, what was the symptoms of the head gasket and the oil cooler ? I have high pressure on my reservoir and it overflows i change the air compressor and it still doing it

    • @brkbrk5205
      @brkbrk5205 4 года назад

      @@fernandocontreras4784 i think symtptoms of a fail head gasket is coolant in the oil, possible overheat, and usuallly when oil cooler goes bad it starts to leak oil in the coolant system, you will notice oil in the coolant reservoir.

    • @gregw8232
      @gregw8232 3 года назад +1

      @@brkbrk5205 Always thot a failed head gasket 'chirps' or shows leakage on the block. If coolant is in the oil that possibly the liners 'O' rings. High pressure in your coolant reservoir can be head gasket failing due to liner dropping.

      Also found that EGR plugging causes a lot of the grief, up to, and most especially, engine failure. Evidently annual cleaning of the system prevents most of it. What they sort of gloss over, if they tell you at all. This is for more than Cummins, a friend is going through this with 2 Mack engines right now.
      Cheers

    How to fix a Cummins ISX15 CM2250: Basically convert it to a CM2350. How? Replace all pistons an liners with the APR pistons and liners to eliminate the horribly honed Chinese liners and carbon scraping issues. Install the steel plunger upgrade into the fuel pump, it's very easy, get rid of the ceramic plungers. Have the head resurfaced and all valves re-sealed with updated seals. Replace the oil pump. Replace the oil filter bypass valve with the updated valve which is less prone to sticking open. Replace the oil cooler. Always pressure test the EGR cooler before assembly. Now you've fixed the most problematic issues in that engine. These problems are more specific to the CM2250. The next best fix is to get a Detroit. The EGR is the primary killer to the ISX engine, it is what creates the carbon issues. Also liners in the CM2250 were cast in China then sent to two locations in the US for honing. One of those locations used three stone hones and caused oblong surfaces, these liners will cause piston/ring failure. It''s a 50/50 chance cm2250 liners went though this honing process.

    300k the engine breaks? 50k miles???? 25k-30k engine oil replacement? Take this from an expert in oils..no matter what oil you use after 10-12k miles it will loose all its properties. All oil manufacturers tell u stories but won the you All Of Them are using same base oil. 80% of oil composition is the same between all brands, the rest 20 % are patent formulas that make their oil different than others .Advice to all owners :No matter what oil u use dont run over 12k miles no matter what oil. Dont be cheap in saving money on oil...thats the life of the engine...how many oil changes do you need to skip to save 20k dollars on an overhaul? Be cheap on different parts but not on oil 12k miles top...no matter what oil u use

      LMAO you can use rotella T6 well past 12k miles. Changing you oil filter is more key than the oil @ 12k or so. You can send samples of your oil to a lab and you can tell when you should change your oil, along with many other things the sample will tell you. Some can go 50k miles with just changing filters. many factors play into why/when you should change your oil. I think I'd stick with science over some random word.

      @@pokerman9108 ima tell you like Roger Mayweather told people who knew nothing about boxing and use his line "you obviously know nothing about trucks and main bearings" when u just replace the oil filter you are leaving all that contaminated oil at the oil pan which is going to contaminate that new oil filter as soon as you crank up and oil pressure starts to build. Don't be a lazy mechanic with a buttcrack showing just flush all that old oil and filter with new fresh oil and filter. And don't forget your davco fuel and secondary filters

      Cummins has a very good engine platform, the most common problems I see at the dealership is drivers don’t change fuel filters when they are suppose too. Most drivers ignore check engine lights. And keep on driving. Fuel pump parts have been improved due to the ceramic plungers breaking, they were replaced DLC plungers ceramics were breaking because oil change intervals were being ignored. Maintenance intervals are listed in owners manual follow them

      Zibotey Sly like I said Cummins is best option in market. Every engine has issues when it has to work 3 times hard due to DPF Cleaning. Yes I agree Cummins burns oil very quick due to engine oil temperature goes extremely hot during regen but if engine consuming like 1 gallon every 5000 miles consider as normal. look oil consumption chart on Cummins website it’s all normal.

    Francisco, I have question, when you say that cummins 2016 year and up is better, do you mean truck is 2016 and up or we have to look at date which is on engine cover? Bcs ussualy if truck is 2016y, on engine says 2015.
    Thank you

    The 2019 Kenworth 312,870 miles with Cummins engine.
    2018 Freightliner 348,817 miles.
    Which one would be good investment?

    Only problem with Detroits is the dealerships can't figure out how to fix them. If you want to keep returning to the shop over and over for months just to fix a stupid code that keeps coming back, then yeah, Detroits are for you.

    Hey thank you so much brother. I really appreciate your videos. Now, do you have any video where you can explain, overall, which engine is better on a 2013 to 2015 year truck, Freightliner or Kenworth or Volvo. Those are my options. What do you think ? I'm trying to buy a truck

    Our 2013 isx 15 has been nothing but problems. Engine failure at 500k. Our new updated 600hp isx has been very good so far but only ~175k miles on it so we'll see. These new emissions engines are just plain junk.

      @@jessehussle4883 I'd say your best bet is to lease a new truck. Trucks don't last choked out and running costs are too high. Being an owner-operator can be tough especially if you have a truck payment on top of it.

    Many people are having #6 cylinder,valve problems in a Cummin's ISX engine. Have you seen that problem? can you explain it? Like you said, most problems in ISX15 engines are found in engines from 2007 to 2015, like the #6 valve malfunction. thank you.

      Cummins recommends 15,000 mile oil change for severe duty on my ISX15. So I start off doing mine at 12,000 miles for the first year then quickly switch to every 8000 miles after learning about how quickly the oil gets contaminated with carbon and soot. Oil changes are cheap maintenance when you do them yourself. I’m at 240,000 miles so far with no problems but I still have low expectations with these new motors
