    ★★ WHAT THIS VIDEO IS ABOUT★★
    This video explains what triphthongs are: a combination of three vowel sounds in one syllable. The usual pattern is: a diphthong + the central vowel sound /ə/ (= the schwa) all together forming one syllable, also called the nucleus of a syllable. We will go over some example words which contain triphthongs in English and we have a careful look at the spelling pattern because the letter ‘R’ plays a special role here!
    *NB: Unfortunately, I made a little mistake in the video in my phonemic transcript for the example word 'year'. The correct transcription is: / /jɪə/ or /jɪər/ not: /jeə/!

    Saying a Triphthong can be pronounced as a Diphthong plus a Monophthong, but that a Diphthong plus a Monophthong can't be pronounced as a Triphthong seems hypocritical. I've heard plenty of people pronounce royal, liar (or lire), layer (or lair), buyer, lower (or lore) as single syllables.
    Other than this, this is a nicely educational video. Thank you.

    Thanks for the detailed, well illustrated, highly intelligible teaching. I have a question, please. Does the word "player" have a diphthong or triphthong?

    • @BillieEnglish
      @BillieEnglish  Год назад +1

      Hello Bala! Thank you for your kind words. The word 'player' consist of 2 syllables: you have a diphthong /ei/ in the first and a schwa in the second.

    Some of your examples show two syllables on my transcription app, because stress is indicated.
    Why do we have the variation..?

    Thank you so much for shared to us about this material, this is also helpful for me🙏🏻. And I wanna ask related to the Tripthongs. So, basically, we have 5 tripthongs or 6 tripthongs? Because when I search on google, I found another tripthongs (jʊə). Is 'jʊə' include tripthongs too?
    Thank you in advance

    • @BillieEnglish
      @BillieEnglish  2 года назад +1

      No, not officially. But then again, phonology is not like a court with laws and absolutes. Usually, this is not mentioned in the group of triphthongs, but then some books might add it anyway because /j/ is also called a semi-vowel, so /jʊə/ is one syllable a bit like the tiphthongs (but officially /j/ is a consonant!).

    Thank you for the video, but I have a question about the words layer, lair, royal, and lower. You said they are not triphthongs but in Peter Roach book it says they actually are triphthongs. Could you please explain thank you.

    • @BillieEnglish
      @BillieEnglish  2 года назад

      Hello RO, sure! So a triphthong is found in ONE syllable only and the words you listed (layer, royal & lower) all consist of 2 syllables not just one. The word 'lair' only has one syllable, but it consist only of a diphthong = /leə/, there is no schwa sound to make it a triphthong. I hope this helps!

    I have a question why tripthongs are not included in vowels system

    • @BillieEnglish
      @BillieEnglish  2 года назад

      Hello! They are included in the vowel chart (= the trapezium), but as individual sounds not together like diphthongs or triphthongs. Some charts show both: monophthongs and diphthongs but not triphthongs - to be honest I don't know why. I guess it is to keep the chart simple and not to make it too complicated for learners!

      The are part of it in a way: as individual single vowel sounds (= monophthongs).
