Born in School Street, went to St Mary’s Primary, then St Patrick’ then nursed at Glasgow Royal then midwife at Rottenrow then lived in Canada,Spain,Italy and now U S A .and my day was made just looking at my old home.Itwas lovely and I think of it often.Wonderful memories.
If you went to St Patrick’s for secondary school I guess you passed the old 11+ and this was before comprehensive education came in. Otherwise would have been the old St Mary’s Secondary (I think it was called) later Columba High (of blessed memory) now merged into that I think called St Margaret’s down near Ailsa Place. Poor old St Mary’s Primary School now long gone - as is Columba - loved that old black building.
after a clash concert in 77, imet a female punk and i went to her house after concert. and as watched this all my love for her and her good family sent the hairs on my head going north. im now back in germany but i have many super good memories of this little town. i was only there for 5 days. but it was 5 days of walking with the one i loved!!ectasy i do remember going to a cafe called the rainbow. the coffe was shit but tasted good whilst whilst looking into her eyes!! good people live there. i was never fell unwelcome
Up to the 1960-70s the place name was: “The Wifflet”. Middle English/Old Scots for the wheat field. From an age long past when the land, granted by King David the First, was farmed by the monks. Dropping the ‘the’ is a very recent evolution albeit a dwindling band of folks of my generation continue to pronounce the name as it should be.

My lovely wife is from Coatbridge, and we were married there in 1974. It has changed over the years. We used to go to the Rainbow Cafe.
