Definitely the right call though I can imagine it was not an easy decision to make. Don't worry about unsubscribing - you don't get rid of us that easily! Sleep well and enjoy your trip, fella.
Cockpit drains can't go straight up to the cockpit above They have to cross before exiting... Starboard exits the hull to port; Port exits the cockpit to Starboard. The reason is when the boat is on heel, water can't climb up the tube to flood you out. Good luck.
He said. “Not some idiot “ referring to a well meaning fellow yachtsman. I think we all listen to a lot of advice from people, all well meaning and go with what you think is best advice.
This just got exciting! Sounds like a good plan, you're gonna know her inside and out when your finished! Wish I could pop in for a pint and a chat with you at the bar, but I'll settle for the videos. Hair looks great btw!
Good sensible choice, time always comes up with the answer. Better to resolve the problems on the hard than halfway across Biscay. Don't rush, work steadily, logically and within your budget and you will succeed! (please keep us armchair sailors in the loop)
Left Portland yesterday. Was wondering where u were. Love your channel keeping it real. Took me 2and 1/2 years to get my old southerly on the water. All the best Andy. Masquerade
I can enjoy them when the camera view isn't fixed on a close-up of the narrator's face, even perhaps, with the dreaded up-nostril shot. Few faces can handle a high-definition, extended close-up! When we get (as in this video) a continuously changing pov, with interesting variations of background and with the camera sometimes pointed elsewhere, that's when I enjoy it. Another sailing channel I really like is SV Tapatya, where Tony has built and is now sailing a 32ft junk rigged Benford dory. He was in the habit of filming regular talk-to-camera segments, with his face entirely filling the screen, uninterruptedly, in a static shot, for several minutes at a time. He's a good-looking enough bloke, but I found it hard to watch.
You have great friends around you that want you to succeed. You now have a short term plan, so it's now upto you to make it a long term plan. There is no quit with the Bumbling sailor. Best wishes
When you do the cockpit drains, make sure to cross the hoses (i.e. port side drain goes to starboard side seacock and vice versa), that way if you are on a lean you're not getting water spurting up out of the drain and ruining an otherwise fine day :D
Seacocks on cockpit drains, we had a few. My mate suggested I close them when the boat was unattended. Go on guess what happened. Yes we got 120mm of rain in a couple of days nice footbath except for the water that wend down the gear change into the aft cabin locker. You will go great on the days skipper course. Money well spent.
This is what You Tube blogging is all about. Taking us TV sailors along with you to a World most of us can never experience with out you. Thank you. I'm not unsubscribing. Have a lovely time in France. Don't overdo it.
Bear in mind you want to avoid putting too much weight in the ends (bow and stern) as this can lead to the boat hobby horsing in a seaway. Best to keep the heaviest stuff over the keel for a kindly motion. Cheers
I'm only a few miles from you... I'm no expert, but I fully restored my Trident 24... Stripped to the Bones and rebuilt. Happy to help if needed? I go back up north for a week a month while I build up some funds... Leaving for the med in a few months to. You'd be welcome to use my boat while I'm away if you get sick of being on the hard
Some of us like watching people sand epoxy. The videos where people fix and build boats generally get more views than the ones where people just sail them.
Nothing truly worthwhile comes easy to most of us. I think most people would have given up by now. I think this is the first video that I have been asked not to unsubscribe 😂 I definitely will continue following, with what you are attempting it was definitely a tall order but you are showing in can be done. Keep going pal, I am with you for the journey as much as anything else. Best of luck
I feel for you. Second month into my living a year on a boat, my engine overheats (and squeals a helluva lot), and spits out a ton of oily smoke. Now I'm stuck in Portland looking at a sick engine. And I'm not sailing across Lyme Bay. Worse case scenario, I'm looking at a rebore, new pistons and rings. The positive is that I'm still living on the boat, and I'm learning about my boat's engine. Thanks for all the videos - they're great. I wish you the best of luck, and look forward to seeing the refurb videos. And enjoy the sailing in France. Ian
@@BumblingSailor We have in The Kitchen. I'm the tall guy with the greybeard. I'm probably going to be around for the next couple of weeks, so if you need any help with the boat, let me know.
You may find that the gel coat on an old fibreglass boat is much thicker than modern boats. It may take a really tough polish from a professional & bring back the shine instead of painting it. I used to have a 1979 Nicholson that is still on its original gelcoat. Also be careful that you don't take on too many jobs, what you have described doing I think will take more than a few months. Good Luck.
Terry, that prop is perhaps in big trouble. When it was last secured it lived next to the washer tight and secure; now it floats some 3 or 4 mm. Got to remove it and look at what is left of the Key and Keyway.. Talk to the local guys who know about this stuff. Cheers
Done well up to now and yes time to take a breather to get the boat ship shape again , seems good news on the reversing problem a sigh of relief its not more involved. But don't go burning the candle at both ends ,you seem to be getting stressed out with it all just one step at a time and be kind to your self and relax a bit , nice you have the pub job as that will get you in the know with new Boaty friends who will give you all the help you need as a trouble shared is a trouble halved as they say , You have done so much and so well up to now ,Rome was not built in a day😊 .
Good luck with it... some people would be happy to have 1k subscribers you have over 13k! let your story evolve, it could even grow your followers don't worry just keep posting the rest will follow.
Wise move mate, get in done and have the confidence mate 100% Can’t imagine that prop would cost much so just swap it while your doing the work around mate! Makes sense 👌🏻 Well done dude smashing it
Made me smile the bit about low confidence !Too many decades ago now ,when I had a drying mooring that was quite close into shore , I wasted so much time ,because of my lack of confidence at the time ,in getting out on a falling tide ,that I had the uncomfortable sound of my wife saying , ' You know we are going to ground any second don't you !' We did ,and were there till the next tide before we could get out ! I was much better after I quit checking everything ten times and got more experience . It will come ,just takes a little time ! In the meantime ,please keep your very entertaining vid's coming !🍿
Enjoy your break in France, you will love the channel crossing overnight. You are right to follow the advice to get the jobs done where you have support, a job and closer to the sun in the South. If I’m your way I’ll pop in and see how you are doing. Take care of yourself matey. Andy UK
Ha! My buddy owes me $20😂😂😂 It's not a question of if you're a boat rebuild channel, it's just the question of WHEN. I thought the same as you when I started out. Then spent two years rebuilding. 3x the amount of time I thought it would take.
Sounds like all good news! Well done. Looking forward to seeing more about how the day skipper training goes. Haven't gotten any certifications myself yet. The amount of coursework, time and money that they're asking in Canada, the US and NZ just seems extreme.
Dude, you are so relatable no way I am unsubscribing. My boat just got in the water too and July 22nd is first time I will be sailing her this season. Boat life is hard sometimes.
Good to see you dude! Haircut looks fly! Mate, that is the right decision. Sounds like you have made a load of new friends in Portland and they are looking after you. Job, free advice, sailing experience, help, loan tools … living the dream! Maybe a different dream from 3 months ago but it’s no nightmare! All the best.
Good decision. "Enjoy" taking your time & doing the jobs properly. Contessa 26's are great boats & you will be repaid by your great sailing once you are truly ready to launch.
Like others in the comments, I think this is a solid plan and I know we’re all looking forward to the work you’re going to do. Hauling out now and doing it right will ensure a successful future for you and the boat.
This is what I commented on a few weeks ago old chap.... You may also find the propeller key may be missing when you remove it. Wish you all the best and don't give up....
Its a plan and a way forward. If it was just the prop, sort that out, get back in the water and use whats left of the summer to get around to where you wanted to be.
Looking forward to continuing to follow and support you as much as possible! Keep going... Looks like you've got a great support group around you who are willing to help you achieve 🙏
It will be interesting watching you do the work on the boat. Will help out others who may need to do the same . Because things will.go wrong and we will all.learn from.them 😀
What most seem to like about your channel is that you keep it REAL Terry. Try not to be so hard on yourself. Please show as much of the advice and work as you have time for without compromising your progress. Can you live on the boat there ? that's a relief re the prop too, small mercies EH! I doubt you need a new prop unless a free one falls in your lap its amazing how well the grottiest prop comes up after a few minutes with a power wire brush :)

sounds like the best idea. The south coast is the place to be. There are loads of suppliers and people to ask for help or advice. You will also likely get a lot of different opportunities to sail and learn.

I enjoy videos like this where it’s just talking to camera. You don’t always have to be sailing or wot not. Just nice to keep up with what’s going on.

You’ve got some very sensible people around you down there. That’s a sound series of plans you just gave us. Keep doing what you’re doing .

I did the same, but in a different order. I bought my boat and then got a job and moved to my boat lol great stuff
It’s a wise man who changes his mind and a fool who doesn’t. You’ll be right man!
Moving the cockpit drain won't stop the glugging.
Sounds like a plan, well done!

What about putting flexible floppy tubes up the drain holes like fishing boats have that will stop the slop coming in from the rear. Cheap option.

yeah your weird, were weird..lets be weird together 🤪 i'm here for the journey, cant wait see the boat looking good again
Hi the work list sounds good but putting my surveyors hat on yes do you plans for the lower hull but not a good idea to paint the upper hull, get some compound / polishing advice and that hull will clean up well.😄 Painting it will give you an never ending maintenance job for life 😓
Dude, all sailing channels are boat work/fixing channels!…even when they are out to sea! 😉
😂😂😂 True!
Keep looking. We are people.
Remove the prop It should have a key way to stop it spinning on the shaft❤
Yes, been waiting for this. You sound like a different fella coming out the maze. Sleep, push on, relax, sleep. Take care.
Yes great plan, The Osmosis treatment is very easy its just hard work grinding. I have done 2 similar sized hulls one consideration lots of people miss is prep the hull first ASAP wash down with fresh water then give it as long as possible to dry weeks or even months before recoating and filling. Can you live on the boat there ? that's a relief re the prop too, small mercies EH! I doubt you need a new prop unless a free one falls in your lap its amazing how well the grottiest prop comes up after a few minutes with a power wire brush :)
I can't live on the boat unfortunately, but I've got a semi formed plan... Kinda! I was so relieved when I saw the loose prop 😂. Already started popping pesky blisters for them to start drying 👍
Wow ..what a list ! the only thing your not doing is the galley sink , I would check it just to be sure 😏
Things are looking up.
sounds like the best idea. The south coast is the place to be. There are loads of suppliers and people to ask for help or advice. You will also likely get a lot of different opportunities to sail and learn.
