I am an atheist, but the lyrics and the performance were very touching. So merry Christmas to everyone celebrating.

Another unfamiliar/under loved text is Laurie Lee's "A Christmas Landscape" one of the bleakest seasonal poems with a single, excruciating note of hope: ...the stream moves under the ice. Beautiful truth, and sometimes that's all you get under the ice. Knowledge that a stream moves, even if drop by drop.

I was a church choir director for many years, and this was one of my favorites. There are at least two different choral versions, both excellent.

My choir sang this one year (Bob Chilcott's arrangement). The conductor was a pianist that didn't know how to read poetry e.g. not pausing during commas because he'd think it was a grammatically incorrect, or thinking about the imagery or symbolism... Not because he's a pianist, but because he didn't know the secrets that singers have for changing the way we sing to match the lyrics. It's such a beautiful poem and a beautiful song. Wish the conductor took more time with us to appreciate the words, rather than just getting the notes correct

That was a beautiful reading. Thank you! Merry Christmas! I especially love the setting by Gustav Holst - one of my favorite Christmas carols to sing in choir.

We sang this in church as a hymn (choir nerd) one of my favorites but unfortunately I was in the minority so it was only every other year or so. There is also a move by this title by Kenneth Branaugh which I highly recommend.

Thank you, beautiful reading. One of my favourite carols (I was in a choir that sang it this year in a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols).

Love this as a Christmas carol - one of my favourites. I especially love the lines "Snow had fallen, snow on snow, / Snow on snow." Tricky to fit some of the words to the tune, though!
A very Merry Christmas to everyone here, and a wish for a happy and healthy New Year!
(OMG, that accidentally scans and rhymes!😯😄)

I was just thinking the other day that I wanted to see what the lyrics were to that carol, as the music is so beautiful. Now I hear the words, and they are as well. Thank you!

Thank you for that lovely reading. We had our first real snowfall of the season last night - to hear you read Rossetti's beautiful text while gazing out at the new-fallen snow was a wonderful Christmas treat.

This song was also played in the tv series the Crown. It brought me to tears as George V1 knew he would not live another year. My two favourite authors are Austen and Dickens. Would you consider making a seminar comparing them?

Thank you. You made my Christams reading Christina Rossetti, who seemed to say things so simply but with infinite skill. Your natural reading was perfect for the text. How thoughtful of you to post this. I hope your Christmas and 2020 are full of whatever you would like.

I'm not sure that this is either an "unfamiliar reading" or an "underloved text" - I think that it's been sung, in many different versions, at every carol concert I've ever attended (and I've attended quite a few) and every nativity service I've been to (not so many as the concerts - I love music but am a devout atheist). Whether it is read as a poem quite as often though, I have no idea, but it was certainly a favourite when I was at school (more than 60 years ago).
At the risk of being hated and banned from your channel forever, I have to say that I really find the slushy sentimentality of these words - if not accompanied by decent music - twee and nauseating, but as my late mother used to say "It wouldn't do for us all to think alike" (my answer, given under my breath, was "Why not?").
I still love your channel - so Merry Christmas. (I also give my good wishes, at the appropriate times, to those celebrating Eid, Rosh Hashanah, Diwali, the birthday of Guru Nanak etc)

I heard it for the first time in Dubai with a British run choir. Never heard it in Canada. It is very very British.
