Bride PRICE.... Why is it called a PRICE if you're not buying something?
Maybe it should be called bride's gift, in which case the Bride's family shouldn't give a list of "demands", and the husband's family should determine what they would like to give. 🤷🏾‍♂️
In addition, I believe we should only do one wedding. Either traditional OR "white" wedding. We don't typically consider ourselves married with traditional marriages alone anyway.
What really matters is the love and understanding between the two couples. Everything else is symbolic and sentimental.
Some do all and still end up divorcing or living in regret
We are mixing cultures and values and are ending up confused

I concur with bisi. Bride price does not define who you are getting married to. Please choose your partner wisely. Either parent collects bride price or not; a bully remains a bully.
Also, some cultures overdo it. Abeg be responsible....

"We will behaves like animal" Obiajulo thank you for the explanations, Dowry is significant in human life, afterwards marriage is contractual agreement between the husband & wife which is negotiable

Let it be bride/groom price. Bride's price gives unnecessary sense of entitlement to the man and the husband's family. It is a culture that should be adjusted. The price should be transactional - both families should bring gifts in the spirit of uniting them.

If your culture is synonymous to slavery should you stick to it?.... If bride price (including the requirements from the lady's kindred) is paid then the lady is sold/owned... Especially when the man is extorted by the family of the woman... Its as simple as that....
The culture that should be upheld is the process which involves the man meeting the immediate and extended family of the lady.... But anything that has to do with money and buying items must be stopped because its synonymous to slavery...

Bride price is same as a seal. It is what shows that marriage has been contracted.

This misunderstanding that the list is same as bride price in Igbo (Anambra) is becoming annoying. Bride price is actually the least expensive rite but the most important. That is also the only thing that can be returned in case of divorce.

In as much as you guys are making sense in your own way I still tend to disagree, if a man is paying a price to show appreciation then there shouldn't b a bride price but the man should appreciate with whatever he has...a lot of women and men have remained unmarried today bcos of these things....if you see lists of marriage in some so called traditions you will just get angry and walk away....so bad

Don't mind them. They are in 9ja so they're insulated. Come and see how our men in the Diaspora are marrying other races and nationalities in droves because of these kinds of things...

If bride price is paid on a woman, that woman is not a wife....bride price is what differentiate married woman from unmarried woman according to Esan tradition

In my family the groom family bring the pride price as stated on the eru iyawo list but the envelope is returned. My family don't take it they return it, yoruba tribe.
When my daughter was getting married it was on the list and my husband took he did not return it, same yoruba tribe.

So what's the difference between a payment to a prostitute who doesn't belong to any man and a one time payment for a bride?

For an enlightenment program like this, please get the definitions right ... “pride price” is what a man pays in appreciation of the woman he intends to marry, while a “dowry” is what a woman family pays to get married to a man! The later is not applicable to most Nigerian culture. The “alaga” should be educated on this confusion of bride-price and dowry, please!

  • @jakebailey6285
    @jakebailey6285 Год назад

If you oppose the practice of bride price, do you also oppose the practice of engagement rings? Engagement rings are bride price for Oyinbo people. Why does a man have to buy a woman an expensive ring before he can marry her? For the same reason a Nigerian man should give a bride price to the woman's family before he can marry her.
Those people who call bride price slavery are probably afraid of what Oyinbo people would say. I bet if Oyinbo people started supporting the practice of bride price, we would start supporting it too.
Even if you only require that a man is financially viable enough to take care of your daughter, you are still demanding a bride price in a different guise, because you are still determining his suitability to be a husband in pecuniary terms.

African culture is not always bad. Bride price especially in Gold helps the woman get out of the marriage with something if it goes wrong. We don’t have alimony and courts are very slow here.

This is the complication with the modern feminism stands.....
Why should the woman be the only one to be valued?
Why can't a woman also value a man at the point of marriage ?
You really can't eat your cake and have it

A lot dishonest mental gymnastic to attempt to justify a neolithic practice which was long ago rejected in advanced culture. Bride price is only the purchase of a virgin from his father ( virgin not widow, prostitute, fornicatress or unvirgin) it is an economical way for the master of the maid to transact with the new master , there is nothing about appreciation but transaction. Subsahara remains the sole culture which still values this retrograde ticket ann try to justify it with certain biblical description which are not injunction or a proof of love while. Bride price is incompatible with sex equity. it is not divine requierement, for some culture practiced the idea of the father of the bride to pay the groom. it is all economic.
