The latest Disney animated film to hit the stage is 1996's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a movie-musical with a score by the legendary writers Alan Menken (Newsies) and Stephen Schwartz (Wicked). Inspired by Victor Hugo's novel, the piece tells the story of a deformed bell ringer in France's Notre Dame cathedral and his desire to see the world outside his tower. In this brand-new theatrical adaptation, Scott Schwartz brings the material to life with a cast led by Michael Arden as Quasimodo and Patrick Page as the sinister archdeacon Frollo. During a recent rehearsal, Arden, Page, and their colleagues gave us a sneak peek at their process and discussed how this new musical will be relevant to anyone who's ever felt like an outsider.

Can someone please hug and hold the hands of the HBOND cast and tell them its not their fault bloody FROZEN was picked for Broadway?
I don't want to dismiss Frozen's impact on young girls, but the messages of acceptance and forgiveness regardless of race or appearance is so powerful in HBOND that it is criminal to see it dismissed over mere popularity.
Plus, I think we can all appreciate a holiday away from Let it go....

meh i saw both and disney chose right. the actors were great but the production was a mess. they wanted to do there own thing and be true to both the book and disney. it was just a mess. they should have taken hints from the jungle book remake in 2016. which was its own thing and had small call backs to both the book and the og movie. Here they wanted to do it all and that made it messy.

@@dannyhuskerjay I saw it too and I loved it. I think it was the perfect mix of the book and the movie. Altough I prefer the Notre Dame de Paris musical I love this one too. I saw some scenes of Frozen and I hated it. I think it just doesn't work on a stage in the same way as it does in the movie. I didn't feel the same kind of magic and charm like in HBOND. These are obviously very different but the Frozen just seems so empty for me on stage.

Agreed. The mere notion that someone would have chosen Frozen over Hunchback is borderline sickening. It's once again all about money over quality. All video clips I have seen of the Frozen musical so far make it look like a farce. Like no one even cared or tried. There is so much obvious love in this production of Hunchback, so much nuance, emotion, wit and sheer *Quality*. You can watch an entire blurry video recording of the show, and it will still move you to tears multiple times. Watch any recording of the Frozen cast performing their version of "Love Is An Open Door" (actually one of the better songs in the movie) and tell me you haven't seen an awkward middle school production of anything whatsoever that would put it to shame.

Didn't they not pick HB because the choir was too big and it's too dark to be for kids so it was a financial risk

Lol. I’ve always been obsessed with this musical and have been coming back to rewatch all of the videos on the musical and I think it’s funny because Ciara just got cast as Elsa in frozen on broadway so I think that the irony there is really funny.

+Ömer Yilmaz With luck, hopefully Schwartz can push it up and they can make an official Broadway musical out of it. This is the same theater that Newsies got started from, so....

Hunchback is definitely one of the best shows I've ever been in, even if I was in an ensemble role. Hopefully, next time I do it (and this is one of the few shows that I'd do again), I'll be in a more leading role. And that is not just out of arrogance, it's because I want to put myself in the mindset of any of these characters: Quasimodo, Claude Frollo, Phoebus, Clopin. They all are such rich characters with such incredible stories to tell.

Michael Arden's Voice has got to be One of, if not, the Best Voice I've ever heard in my life. Patrick Paige's normal Voice is also amazing as hell. No wonder he portrays A Titular character and does the character so much justice

I think the way the ended the stage production paid homage to the original novel by Victor Hugo which I think is great.

"These characters all come together, all with purpose, all trying to do the right thing facing extraordinary obstacles... We don't offer a solution, but we go to this place that you or others may call dark, that I would call life." - Thomas Schumacher, head of Disney Theatrical Group
It may seem like a bummer... but that's kind of the point :)

I will forever be pissed that it didn’t make it to Broadway! Frozen and SpongeBob made it?! seriously?!
I know it was due to “budget reasons” (which is a cop out, honesty) but I would’ve seen this a THOUSAND times. They could’ve at least recorded it. 😔💔

old comment but the german musical was a translation of the french musical which was written in the 90s and follows the book, this musical is based on the disney movie soundtrack
