Glad you enjoyed the video. It’s a great way to get into motorsport. Like on the bike, driving on mud helps teach you about throttle and vehicle control. Great competition with great friends.
Glad you enjoyed it, it’s always a challenge for the driver when you can not walk the sections . Here they could see the general layout but no more. Very challenging down near the 10 and then the off camber right turn, got loose and very tricky for the later cars.
Taking a car off road on unsuitable tyres, great fun. A bit like when you were a child playing on an old bike. Q. Why are you trying to get up that hill? A. Because I can!

Not forgetting Formula offroad in Iceland. It's great to have a mix of different motorsports around the world. But you are right in the UK there is a great variety of "grassroot" motorsport to get people competing.
Yes the MK1 Escort Estate was a popular car all over Europe in the late 60’s to mid 70’s. Though the car shown is far from standard. Modified engine/gearbox/final drive. Raised and modified suspension. Plus a lot more power…..
The car at 18 Minutes is a Marlin kit car, whilst the car at 21 minutes started of as a Goka buggy with an 1100 cc engine. Much modified now it runs an 1800cc VW golf engine and gearbox.
Only allowed slippers in the FWD class as a way of making the transmission a bit more bullet proof. All other classes must run open , free differentials.
All drivers let their tyres down. At some events there may be a blanket 10psi limit ,most of the time it’s the drivers choice. So sub 10 psi is quite normal , even down as low as 4/5 psi.
Absolutely love it! Great to see the old Escorts and how capable they are with a great driver. I'm from Hungary, and there are only "4x4 trials" sadly (I don't know about any 2wd competitions like this, even that my area is the biggest offroad place here). What are the rules for the tires? Are there different classes for the non-lifted, lifted etc. vehicles?
Yes it’s great to see the old Escorts still out there, though compared to the BMW’s they have less ground clearance, smaller tyres and generally less power. There’s is no quick way of explaining the classes so here we go. Class 1-FWD production saloons. Class 2-Pre 1941 production saloons plus other specific period cars that have been allowed. Class 3-Front engined Rwd production saloons Class 4- Rear engined Rwd up to 1300cc Class 5-Front engined Rwd sports cars Class 6- Rear engined Rwd over 1300cc Class 7-Production vehicles modified beyond permitted limits and front engined “kit cars” that have been listed and then built to an accepted specification. Class 8-Non production cars and rear engined beach buggy’s. X90- A class specifically for the Suzuki X-90 All classes must run an “open “ differential apart from the FWD class which is now ally to used LSD’s due to the fragile nature of a FWD car’s transmission. Road pattern tyres must be used though this has been opened up to allow any tyre as long as an 8mm drill bit doesn’t fit in the tyre tread. Cars can all be raised, this may be done by longer springs or by the use of spacers between the suspension struts and the chassis. Hope that helps. Engines in the saloons can be modified or replaced with another engine of the same configuration from the manufacturer.Whilst forced induction can be used as can be heard on some of the BMW’s in particular
Tyres until recent times have always been specified as a road pattern tyre. Though with some sizes becoming redundant on modern cars, the “8mm drill bit” rule has come in. Whereas as long as the 8mm drill bit doesn’t fit in the tyre tread, the tyre is deemed legal. Opening up the use of more aggressive tyres. Not necessarily for the best some people say. Apart from the FWD cars which can run LSD’s the other classes must use an open differential unit. That’s not to say the differentials are standards, most being modified - ie 4 star wheels and /or needle bearings.
Hi from France 🎉😊, do you have a video about mods allowed on 2wd saloon car? We don't have this kind of motorsport here except with 4x4 off road vehicle
Hello France. No currently we don’t have a video of the modifications done to the cars, but we are planning a video on the class structure and so will probably include some details of modifications in that. I believe events run like this are solely a British thing.
As an American I find this sport very odd or maybe it’s just this course. Either way it’s cool to see how England does off-roading competition! Let her eatttt!!😂
Historically back in the early days of cars these events were used to prove the reliability of these new contraptions.Factories used to enter teams in events, like they do in rallies/racing today to publicise there products. Now it’s just for fun!!
I see it could be perceived as “ hill Billy “ but many competitors take it just as seriously as any other motor sport discipline. A relatively budget friendly way into motorsport in the UK
On these events you are not allowed to walk the”hills”, so experience can help a lot. Also some cars may look similar, but underneath are somewhat different!
why would people use open diffs for this?! maybe I dont understand the rules, or trials are very different in the states, but I'm not really understanding why drivers find it more productive to burn out the tires in place at high rpm, then to just roll back alittle bit to gain alittle more inertia or a slightly different angle of attack for the rear tire.
The use of open diffs helps make the hills harder than if slippers were used thus limiting the climbing abilities of the competitors. The competitors are supposed to keep forward motion and if they come to a halt they have the “3 second rule” in which if they haven’t moved again it is deemed a point of failure ( marked at the position of the centre line of the most forward front hub), though this is at the marshals discretion. So you have one chance only and are not permitted to reverse and realign your vehicle.
No, reversing is not allowed. Forward motion should be kept. If you get stuck, the general rule of thumb is for the Marshall to count to 3 and if you haven’t moved by then , where you are stopped will be your score. It’s very much at the discretion of the Marshall, as long as they are consistent to every one on their “hill” it doesn’t generally cause a problem.
In these events 4WD is not allowed , so X-90’s are allowed to compete in Rwd configuration. They now have their own class. I’m sure a large proportion of these on the roads in the UK, now compete in Classic Reliability Trials like these.
Yes, Road pattern are stipulated. Thus reducing the car’s capabilities and damage to the hills, although on the hills tyre pressures often are let down to 5-10psi. As tyres in certain sizes have become harder to obtain a new ruling has been put in place. So if you have an 8mm drill bit it should not be able to fit in the tyre tread. This has opened up some more aggressive looking tyres , but these can often be quite stiff due to the ply rating.
Can’t beat a old 6astard stretching his timing chain or blowing up a race engine goin nowhere with a flat cap on and a warranty for life from Barum engines
how is this allowed? considering its doing nothing good, for wildlife, for the air we breath, and the obnoxious noise none of us need, dont get me started on the fumes
Luckily enough we don’t live in a dictatorship here in the UK. Different forms of motorsport take place all over the country, indeed all over the world. With many of the events putting money into both local charities, community groups and businesses, putting money where it’s needed locally. Volunteers carry out repairs to tracks generally caused by water erosion or storm damage, keeping them open for walkers, mountain bikers, horse riders in fact all of us. At present in the UK you can get in car and take it to to the other end of the country for holiday. Why’s this any different. Should people who ride horses not be able to take them to shows in lorries? Everybody has a carbon footprint , it’s about how you live your life as a whole , it’s a balance. How does Greta Thunberg get to climate summits, I’m pretty sure she doesn’t walk. At the end of the day we all have different hobbies, my chalk may be your cheese.
