    This board is still for me one of the BEST B450 Micro ATX boards and has a lot of the features in higher end boards, but without the price tag. ASRock hit the nail on the head with this board, and for me this was peak asrock, they seem to have gone off the boil recently, Hopefully AM5 will turn out better for them, but in the meantime for those looking to build a cheap flip system or update and older B450 board this is a good choice and still has some life left in it.
    I even got my Ryzen 9 3900 running on it and it was almost the same performance as the ASUS X570 Tuf Gaming in Cinebench! Not bad results for a budget board.

    No doubting its a good looking board. Ive had no experience with an ASRock mobo yet but jusging by your review you have a special place in your heart for this board. I think that the B450 and AM4 specs still have a long way to go before they are hung out to dry, putting a build around this board would still be a great gaming machine. Thanks Mike and Kath 🙂

      i think a lot of it is the pricing that asrock had back in the day, decent boards with decent prices and pretty stable as well.

      its not without its issues, autoclock default out of box and asrock is pretty much asus and even back then they were pumping too much voltage, so you had to manual set. some bios versions were worse than others in-between especially for memory capability. once you find the good bios's tho, its been a great board all around, I just wish it had a front header for usb-c like i assumed when I bought my case

    This is my son's first mobo. I bought it after watching mike's review 2 years ago. It's lasted really well with the r5 2600/1070. Still has a few miles left in it. Tbh I don't think it would be worth changing the mobo. Even 2nd hand these still sell for a good price. Another great video Mike 👍

    Recall Steel Legend was one of Asrocks better motherboards. Looks smart but well kitted out too. Look forward to seeing your build video. To be honest i would rather watch reviews of affordable components than all the reviews of elite cpu & mbs being announced at the moment. They just seem outlandishly expensive and unreachable for normal users imo and cant b bothered to watch! Thanks for reviewing Mike and Kath👍Great channel as always 🎥🍻

    A few months ago (as of December 2023) a friend of mine bought one of these motherboards brand new on my recommendation to run my old AMD Ryzen 5 1600X and Nvidia GTX 1070 in when I sold them to him. I have good news for folks, the latest BIOS is fully compatible with AMD Ryzen 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000G, 5000 and 5000G CPUs. He got lucky and from the factory the latest BIOS was flashed on it, so the 1600X is working perfectly out of the box. And, thanks to this video it is good to know that the upgrade to the Ryzen 9 3900X he just got for Christmas is very much a worthwhile, and drop in, upgrade! I personally upgraded to an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X on my Gigabyte B450M motherboard I bought for the 1600X originally. Just be aware that if you are looking to upgrade to a 3000 or 5000 series CPU, you are still stuck at PCI-E generation 3, so if you are jumping straight into building a ground up Ryzen 3000 or 5000 series machine from the start, buy a better/newer chipset that supported them out of the box to get the full access to the newer generations of PCI-E.

    this board has been the best value component i've purchased so far. I bought it for my wife's rig in 2020 for just 85 bucks on newegg, its been through a couple cpu changes and handles a 3600 at 4.2 just fine! no issues running all memory slots either at 3200 cl16 (should have gone with 3600 but oh well). the only downside has been the rgb polychrome software which has a reputation for being a buggy mess which i can definitely confirm. but once you get a setting you like locked in the effects and on board lights look great paired with some arctic P14 argb fans!

    Also would like to say that for the past 6 months or so, my Gigabyte B450M motherboard has been running great with my G.Skill 3600MHz CL16 RAM running at its full speed of 3600MHz and CL16 along side my Ryzen 5 5600X. I have had my Gigabyte board since 2019 and back then, I could only run my RAM at 3200MHz with the Ryzen 1600X because that was all its poor memory controller could do. I am guessing that either through the latest BIOS and/or hardware lottery so far my machine runs flawless at my RAM's full speed. If I can remember to, I could update folks on the RAM speeds I can get my friend's machine to run at with the 3900X vs the 1600X which still limits his RAM to 3200MHz as well.

    AsRock smashed the aesthetics on this “Steel Series” motherboard. AsRocks VRMs and sometimes sub-tier QC are what stops me from buying their boards 😖😢. They were a great budget brand alternative in their launch day and gave customers some real choice against higher priced big brands …. We know them 😜. This board is fine for up to a low end R5 like 5600 (nom-X CPUs) or low end R7 like the 5700 ( not the 5800x or X3D) cpu at stock settings …… your limited mainly to a 65watt cpu not the 95-125+watt CPUs. For most home users and general gamers this board is fine …. But for those who like tinkering or higher end R7 or R9 CPUs….. I’d avoid this like the plague. I’m surprised the 3900x didn’t explode 😱🤯….. what were the 3900x cpu and vrm temps etc for testing, benchmarks etc like after 15+mins of use?

    I hope you do not mind, but I now have my friend's computer upgraded from the Ryzen 5 1600X to an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, and here is a quick update on it: The 3600MHz RAM he bought is still being limited to 3200MHz like it was with the Ryzen 5 1600X. However, that said, the upgraded beast runs beautifully. The GTX 1070 is an obvious bottle neck now, however, at 1920x1080 he can play Forza Horizon 5 with all the settings on high and gets 90-100 FPS. With Cyberpunk 2077, patch 2.1 he has been running on mostly medium settings with FSR 2.1 set to Quality, on the 1600X there was some noticeable hitching as I think the CPU was stalling a bit but the game played at pretty much 60 FPS. With the 3900X, the hitching is gone and the game runs flawless. He can play God of War: Ragnarok with the settings all nearly maxed out, solid 60 FPS. And since the GPU is the bottle neck, the CPU itself runs about 65-90 watts on average vs the 110-115 watts of the 4GHz all core overclocked 1600X because it was maxed out in most games along with the GPU. Once he finds a better graphics card (currently has his eye on a RTX 3070) we may also upgrade his water cooler as well because his current one can JUST barely keep the CPU under 80C when hit with a 100% all core work load. That said, it never did thermal throttle in the 1 hour stress test to make sure everything would hold up and it never peaked above 80C at any time.

    Yeah, compared to the b550m steel legend, the m.2 port is between the cpu and the pcie slot. on the b550-m, the m.2 port is under the pcie slot. this config prevent the use of big air cooler like the noctua nh-d15 and put the video card closer to the air cooler too. So, if pcie gen 4 is not something important, better go with the b450.

    Asrock unintentional fanyboy here, they make the best cheaper boards. And they fully compete with features and functions of msi, Asus, gigabyte, etc. In most cases, they pretty much beat them all in one aspect or another.
    This particular board isn't the best example of this, but most of their boards have insanely overbuilt vrms for overclockers on most of their boards. This one only has a 3+3, but all their Mainboards have anywhere between 14-22 total. I have an am5 b650m with 17+1+1+3. Costed me only 160 bucks.... for a brand new ddr5 board with insane oc support. I have reliably got 4 dimms of 6000mhz+ ram working just with expo. Ive had the easiest out of box experience setting up my ddr5 rig.
    I will say asrock is better for amd cpus rather than intel. But they are a solid mobo company.

    • @mikeclardy5689
      @mikeclardy5689 Год назад +1

      @@mikesunboxing agreed. Then again, most A series boards are the suck. Just period... I went with a b650m because it was cheaper while still having good features to pair with my 7950x and asrock has 17+1+1+2 vrm phases on the board i picked, so I have overclocking room. Its more than enough to just enable PBO with tjmax off and forget about it.
      Though I did have an A320m board for 7 years before I had the money to upgrade.... despite how low power that board was, it did last until I tried to put an m.2 drive in there and it shorted... but 7 years of me smoking, vaping, stuck inside a micro inwin case with no airflow and playing games it really shouldn't be playing on 8 gigs of ram and a zotac mini 1070 ti that ran idle at 93c by manufacturer design... it was run through the ringer. Constantly on higher than average but just under throttle temps, ran 24/7 had thousand of hours of super modded fallout and skyrim, space engineers, ark, etc...
      I think its more believable I killed my pc with overuse and it just threw a fit with the idea of me upgrading it to abuse it further lol.

You can still technically run the chip up to 95c before you start to throttle or run into crashing but even upgrading to a cheap wraith prism or better cooler will make a world of difference! Hi Mike, awesome content as usual. Speaking of AM4 and previous gen cpus, I do need your opinion on something - In late 2020 (just before prices went crazy), I built my first PC: Ryzen 5 3600 (cooled by a Deepcool Gammaxx 400 EX Air Cooler) coupled with a GTX 1660 Super on a Gigabyte b450m DS3H V2 Motherboard with Ripjaws V 16 GB (2x8) 3200MHz CL16. Initially, my storage was an XPG SX8200 Pro M.2 500GB and an old Toshiba 1TB hard drive. In 2021, I added a Samsung 870 EVO 1TB SSD. My original PSU was the Gigabyte P650 80 Plus Bronze, but got scared when news of the P750 variant blowing up and got the Corsair RM750 when it went on sale in my country 3 months ago.
    All these components are housed inside a RAKK ATX case (rakk.ph/products/rakk-haliya-atx-gaming-case-black ) with Arctic F12 Fans.
    I use the PC for work (basic MS office apps needed) and play AAA games (Halo Infinite, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, etc) and the occasional indie that is available on Xbox Game Pass.
    (whew, that was a lot of contexts there)
    So, my question: Are there any advantages in upgrading my MB to an ATX? I ask because the Asus ROG Strix B450-F Strix Gaming II ATX Motherboard got cheaper recently in my country and is selling for about 120 USD. I saw your video on this from last year and you had a lot of good things to say about it.
    Is it worthwhile to upgrade to the ROG Strix MB? Aesthetically, I do think it will look awesome in my ATX case, but I don’t think this reason is enough. I might have some need for the better audio codec in the future, but not at the moment. I understand that ATX MBs provide better long-term durability (Before 2020, my last PC lasted me 8 years!). I know that the ROG Strix has better VRMs, but I don’t overclock at all.
    Help me save money! Part of me wants to push the button and just buy the new MB because I am getting the itchy finger and want to tinker with my PC (hahaha) but the other (more practical part) is thinking that, if this does not really give substantial upgrade in performance or durability, better control myself!

    • @mikesunboxing
      @mikesunboxing  Год назад

      to be honest if it is all working then upgrading the motherboard is a little pointless and won't give you much back for your investment. If the processor had more cores then it might be a slight improvement due to better VRMs but again you would definitely need to run benchmarks to see the difference, and possibly getting a new windows key after the swap.
